    ________
    White. John White (see ante, p. 331) married, June 27, 1672, Sarah Keyser (who married, second, Lawrence Crawford), John & Sarah (Keyser) White had issue:
    (1) William (1673-1708) m. Catherine Powell;
    (2) Elizabeth 1674, m. Francis Thorowgood,
    (3) Tabitha, 1677, m. first, Lawrence Rieley; second, Robert Hill
    (4) Priscilla (twin), (1677-1730/1) m. first, George Layfield (see ante. pg 376); second John Watts;
    (5) Stevens, (1679-1718) m. first c 1710, Atalanta Whittington (see ante, p. 381); second Mrs. Katherine (Fassitt?) Hope, (she m. third James Round);
    (6) Sarah, 1680, m. first, William Massey, second Francis Hamlin;
    (7) Francis (1682-1683)
    (8) John, c. 1684, probably died young.

    (Evidence for statements in this note will be found in Somerset deeds judicials and wills in the following volumes: IKL, pp. 273 & 282; EB5, p. 125 & 185; o20, p. 173; O11 p. 125; O14, p.188, 189, & 209; O10 p. 5; O15 p. 21; & Md. Cal. Wills, III, p. 161; Ljungstedt, County Court Note Book, VIII, p18.

    There has always been the traditions in Somerset County of a relationship between Col. William Stevens (1630-1687), of "Rehoboth", and the White family. The most constant form of that tradition is that Sarah, wife of John White, was a sister of Col. Stevens. This is obviously erroneous, as the record (Libe IKL, p. 273) shows that John White married 27 Jun. 1672, Sarah Keyser, and that William, Elizabeth, Tabitha, Priscilla, Stevens, Sarah & Francis White were children of John & Sarah (Keyser) White.

    1687 Col. William Stevens, in his will dated Aug 29, 1687- probated 26 Mar 1688 (Liber EB5, p. 171-2) devises property to John and Sarah (Keyser) White and several of their children. Col. Stevens calls Mrs. Sarah White "My sister White" and John White "my brother John White", and two of their children he calls "cousin" (a term used for nephew of niece).

    As a matter of fact, the relationship of Col. Stevens to the Whites seems to have been through Steven's wife Elizabeth.

    After Stevens' death his widow Elizabeth married George Layfield

    and after her death George Layfield married Pricilla White, daughter of John & Sarah (Keyser) White. The marriage of Layfield to Priscilla White created quite a sensation because, as it was said, "Mr Layfield... perstists in marrying of his neice... "Priscilla White, who Layfield married as his second wife, was not his own blood-niece, but the niece of Layfield's first wife, Madam Elizabeth Stevens. (For a full account of Layfield's marriages, see ante, p. 376), Such marriages were forbidden by eccleslastical law of the established church. Madam Elizabeth Stevens-Layfield was, before either of her marriages, no doubt Elizabeth Keyser, sister of Sarah Keyser, the wife of John White, and therefore aunt to Priscilla White who married George Layfield as his second wife.

    There was a Benjamin Keizer (or Keyser) of Somerset County (who died in 1691), who in his will names "my father George Keizer," brothers Elizer and John Keizer, sister May Mould and "my cousins [Nieces and Nephews?] Tabitha White, Priscilla White, Sarah White, Stevens White and William White".

    He also left small legacies to Lawrence Crawford and George Layfield, and refers to land which Col. William Stevens, of "Rehoboth", in his will, also devised property to Edmund Howard and his son William Stevens Howard, not mentioning any relationship.

    William Stevens Howard was the son of Edmund Howard & Margaret Dent (IKL).
    John White, in his will, probated 3 Oct 1685, calls William Stevens Howard "my cousin". The relationship is unexplained beyond the reference.
