    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Other-Begin: 15 Dec 1733, Charles Co, Maryland; father's will

    Notes:

William Stevens Howard's will 1733: To daughter Rachel wife of Mathew COMPTON personalty. Residue of estate after wife's thirds are deducted, to four young children: viz. William, Elizabeth, Susannah, & Sarah. Test. Benjamin DOUGLASS, Sr. Philip JENKINS, Benjamin DOUGLAS Jr. [L21f55].

The mother of Rachel Howard needs more investigation. William Stevens' brother Thomas was married to an Elizabeth Douglass. William Stevens' first wife was apparently Elizabeth Douglass. The Elizabeth who was married to Thomas was a widow d was married to Thomas in 1714, so she apparently is not one and the same with the Elizabeth Douglass who was the first wife of William Stevens Howard. Sarah Briscoe's first husband died in 1717, but it's possible they had divorced rather than she being widowed. In William Stevens will he left legacy to 4 young children and Rachel, wife of Mathew Compton. Since Rachel was already married and he had 4 young children, assumption is that Rachel was the child of his first wife.

Need to confirm birth date. He was not listed in the Trinity Church records; therefore, possibly was older than Elizabeth and his birth recorded in another parish whose record is no longer extant.
His will was dated 3 Nov 1784, probated 20 Nov 1784, in Charles Co, Maryland, names his mother Rachel and mentions brothers Matthew, John, Alexander and Edmund. He does not mention Barton who presumably was deceased by that time. Also mentis William and Zachariah as brothers who were not mentioned in his father's will or the Trinity Parish Register. Stephen also named sisters Susanna, Margaret and Elizabeth. In another place he refers to "my niece Ann Compton, daughter of sister Wilder," and to "my nephew Henry T. Compton." He also speaks of "my sister Susanna Swann," and "my three children-in-law, Sarah H. Maddox, Elizabeth J. Maddox, and John Maddox" which he leaves a tract of land called Hanson's Discovery and to John Maddox part of a tract called Bargain. In another place he mentions nephew William S ( or T.) Compton (Liber WB1 folio 421).

His wife's name was Margaret. Their daughter Mary Ann Compton was born in 1762. She married Notley Maddox in 1790 in Charles Co, Maryland. Notley was born in St. Mary's Co., Maryland and died November 08, 1813 in Rowan Co, North Carolina.

NOTE: TODO Check dates! Sarah Browder said this John s/o Stephen (s/o Matthew & Rachel) I think she is wrong. if date of Stephen is correct (1735), he would have had to be abt 12 y.o. John is not mentioned in Stephen's will.

Lived in Charles Co, MD, and is thought he died in Kentucky. She died before he and the Crabb family moved to KY.

This is the line of Sarah Browder.
