He lived first in Portsmouth, Rhode Island, then in Dartmouth, Massachusetts, and finally at Kingston, Rhode Island; was a farmer. He married, July 25, 1657, Elizabeth Lawton, daughter of Thomas Lawton; she died 1711. One Thousand Seven Hundred and Nineteen I Peleg Shearman of the town of Kingstowne in the Collony of Rhoad Island and Providence Plantations in New England Yeoman being very sick and weake in Body butt of perfect minde and memory thanks be given unto God; therefore calling to mind the mortality of my body and knowing that it is appointed for all men once to dye, do make and ordaine this to be my last will and testament that is to say principally and first of all--- I give and recommend my soul into the hands of God that gave it and for my body I recommend to the earth to be buried in a decent Christian buriall at the discretion of my Executor hereafter named, nothing doubting but that at the resurrection I shall receive the same again by the almighty power of God-- and as for that temporal and wordly estate wherewith it hath pleased God to bless me in this life I give, devise and dispose of the same in the following manner & for me.

I give to my well beloved son Thomas Shearman his heires and assigns forever twenty acres of land that I purchased of John Briggs formerly of deceased as pr deed under his hand in which it may more fully appeare, the abovesaid twenty acres situate lying and being in the town sh____________ F.D.S. 1767 Vol. 6, p. 6

I have already given ____ by deed of gift ____ and bequeath to my well beloved son Peleg Shearman one loom and tracking which I formerly ____ him ____________ and bequeath to my well beloved son Samuel Shearman ___ one bead stead which I left in his h____ and bequeath to my beloved son Eber Shearman *omitted _______ thereon which is scituate lying and being ____est side of Taunton River in the town of Swansey or adjoyning thereunto in the county of Bristol aforesaid, to him and unto his heirs which are lawfully begotten of his own body. And further my will is that my said son Eber Shearman shall have all my right of lands lying on the ___ side of Tauntonriver beside the aforesaid ten acres if any theire be that I have not already disposed of to him ye said Eber Shearman, his heirs and assigns forever. __n ten acres of land & a dwelling house stand and confirme unto my well beloved son Benj which I have already given him ____ deed of gift _____ unto my dearlly ________ F.D.S. 1768

I give and bequeath to my six cousens the children of Mary Shearman (viz): Eber Shearman; Elisha Shearman; Stephen Shearman; Samuel Shearman; Peleg Shearman and William Shearman all of Kingstown the sum of five pounds apeace to be paid to each and every of theem by executor hereafter named. Notes:

Thomas Sherman, son of Peleg Sherman, was born in Portsmouth. Rhode Island, August 8, 1658. He moved to Washington county, Rhode Island, and bought land a mile north of the Kingston depot, now situated in Exeter and North Kingston. This was the family homestead until about 1868, when it was sold. He married, June 26, 1702, Lydia Wilcox. Children: Josiah, born March 2, 1703; Ruth; Daniel; Benjamin.

He was admitted freeman Feb. 16, 1697. A farmer in South Kingstown. His farm was in the extreme northwest corner of the town.

The inventory of his estate amounted to almost seven hundred pounds including one negro man valued at twenty-five pounds.

" There are several other interesting events concerning this family that are derived from the town council records of South Kingstown.

On 11 Mar 1727/8, George Sherman and Benjamin Sherman ages 17 and 15 respectively appeared before the town council and requested that a man by the name of John Sheldon be appointed their guardian. This was approved and John Sheldon accepted his responsibility. This action is a little strange inasmuch as these two boys had apparently been living with their step father, Thomas Potter, and their mother, Lydia Wilcox Sherman Potter for the past eight years."

"Lydia again appeared before the town council probably some time in Feb 1729/30 and requested that someone be appointed to lay out the 1/3 of her first husband's (Thomas Sherman) estate to which she was entitled. (It appears that things moved pretty slowly in those days. Her husband had only been dead ten years now, and this was the second time that the town council ordered this to be done).

On this same day, Lydia's two sons, George and Benjamin Sherman, who had previously requested that John Sheldon be their guardian, now requested of the town council that Lydia be re-instated as their guardian. The council allowed this."
