    ---Hal Dean Smith, 51, of La Plata died unexpectedly following an apparent heart attack Tuesday night (March 17, 1981) at 10:30 at his place of business.
    ---Born Sept. 11, 1929 in Edina, he was the son of Arthur Glen and Ruby Edith Burchett Smith. On Oct. 11, 1957, in the state of Oklahoma, he married Joyce Yvonne Wood who survives. Also surviving are four sons, Jerome E. Floyd of Fontana, Kan., Hal Dennis Smith of Kansas City, Terry Dean Smith of 1414 E. Patterson and Joe Smith of LaPlata; one daughter, Ruby Melissa Smith of LaPlata; four grandsons; his mother, Ruby Winslow of 1208 E. Jefferson; and one sister, Mrs. John (Reva) Nichols of Rt. 2, Kirksville.
    ---He was preceded in death by his father, one brother and an infant daughter.
    ---Mr. Smith was a graduate of Kirksville High School and attended NMSU. He was employed for 18 years with the Kansas City Fire Department. After his retirement in 1972, he moved to LaPlata where he owned and operated Smitty's Tavern.
    ---During World War II, Mr. Smith served with the United States Air Force for three years. During his military career, he served in Germany.
    ---Mr. Smith was a member of VFW of Kirksville; Reynolds-Martin American Legion Post No. 282 of LaPlata; the Loyal Order of the Moose in Kirksville and the International Fire Fighters Association.
    ---Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon (March 29, 1981) at 1:30 in the Pollock Funeral Chapel in La Plata.
    ---Burial will be in the LaPlata Cemetery.
    ---Bearers will be: James Self, James Bragg, Donald Beach, Richard Hughes, Howard Hughes and Lavon Eitel.
