    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Religion: Episcopal clergyman

    Notes:

It it believed that he was born during his father's migration from Massachusetts to New Jersey. According to Jack D. Ross, Hezekiah was born in Barnstable Township, Barnstable, Maryland. At the death of his father he was made executor of thill along with his mother, although he was not of legal age. Thus, he surely had the confidence and respect of his father.
He was accepted as a townsman of Piscataway 2 Jan 1687/8 apparently on coming of age. He married in 1690 Mary Dunn, daughter of Hugh Dunn and Elizabeth Drake, one of the immigrant families of Mass. Hugh Dunn mentioned Hezekiah in his will. ry was born 19 Jan 1671 in Piscataway. They had four children: Mary, Samuel, Hannah and Sarah, their births being preserved in the Piscataway records." Family tradition indicates that he was an Episcopal clergyman. He was a farmer by trade.
During the period 1690 to 1699 there were numerous land transfers made by Hezekiah and his wife Mary, including receiving a patent for land at Piscataway in 1695. "Bonham's lot," also "Bonham's creeks," and "Nicholas Bonham's land" are spn of in different conveyances.
On 1 May 1697 Hezekiah Bonham received confirmation of a grant of 182 acres "in right of his late father Hezekiah Bonham, Thomas Ffarnewoorth and Daniel Lippington." Hezekiah Bonham and wife Mary later sold two of these tracts.
On 9 Oct 1697 Hezekiah Bonham of Piscataway and wife Mary sold land in Piscataway part of which was the "remainder of land held by Bonham in the right of Daniel Lippentone"
Hezekiah and wife Mary sold further land in Piscataway to Edward Slater on 27 Oct 1698. (Lippentone and Slater were brother-in-laws).
One Sunday in about 1697 or 1698 Hezekiah, who was credited with being a religious man and one of influence in the church, was found working by the very religious Edmund Dunham, his brother-in-law. Hezekiah's sister Mary had married Edmund Dm in 1681. Mr. Dunham was the first white child born in Piscataway township, and his father, Benjajah Dunham, is said to have settled here years before any other Englishmen arrived. Oliver B. Leonard in writing on "Piscataway Planters" says "Edmund Dunham grew to be an influential member of society, and became a lay preacher, helping to mold the tender consciences and direct the religiously inclined of the pioneer community." At that time Edmund was pastor of the Baptist Church of Piscataway. Because Edmund found Hezekiah working on Sunday he took him to account. To quote Morgan Edwards on the incident:
"Bonham put Dunham to prove that the first day of the week was holy by divine institution. How the debate was carried on is not known; but it is known that the above attack was the thing which set Mr. Dunham to study the subject; and that cing the seventh day of the week was the effect. In a short time after 17 people sided with Mr. Dunham which opened a prospect of having a Sabbatarian church in Piscataway; to prepare for it Mr. Dunham went to Westerly, (RI) and there received ordination at the hands of Rev. William Gibbons; and in 1705 he and his party were formed into a church," the Seventh Day Baptist Church of Piscataway.
Hezekiah was not among the organizers. He had moved to Hunterdon in West Jersey in about 1698 as he appears in no record of any kind in Piscataway after 1698, except the sale of further land in Piscataway to Edward Slater on 27 Oct 1698. (Lintone and Slater were brother-in-laws). Evidently the property was sold after their move since on 18 March 1698/9 he appears in a list of inhabitants of Maidenhead when Gov. Jeremiah Basse and others, as agents, sold 100 acres to the inhabitants of Maidenhead for 5 shillings, for a meeting house, school and burial ground, thus indicating that he had an interest in that section of New Jersey.
(my note: there is no evidence of this 2nd marriage and 15 children)
Mary Dunn died Nov 7, 1699 and he remarried in 1700 in Hunterdon Co. By his second wife he had 15 more children, some thirteen of whom bore names ending in the Biblical "iah". Hence they are called the"iah" BONHAMS. These children were Heze, Jr.; Nehemiah; Zachariah; Zedekiah; Amariah; Temperance; Malachiah; Amaziah; Jeremiah; Ephraim; Josiah; Isaiah; Obadiah; Zephamia; and Uriah.
On 28 Aug 1701 he is mentioned as an abutter in Middlesex Co,; on 26 Aug 1703 he was among those who consented to an agreement between Dr. Daniel Coxe, Esq. and Thomas Revell, on behalf of purchasers of land in Maidenhead and Hopewell Townsh
On 1 Jan 1712/3 he contributed money to organize a new county (in this document he is Hezekiah Bonham, Sr., indicating that a younger Hezekiah, not necessarily his son, was in the town).
On 24 Nov 1722 he witnessed the will of Jonathan Stout of Hopewell Township.
In 1723 he was a judge in Hunterdon Co.
On 6 Nov 1730 his original signature appears with others on an agreement to sell the town lot to the highest bidder.
On 21 April 1732 his bond is mentioned in the codicil to the will of Daniel Howell of Trenton.
On 9 July 1738 his signature appears on the will of Henry Merson, the last known recording of his name. The exact date of his death and burial place are unknown.
    ____________________
There is some debate as to the identity of his second wife. According to "Mayflower Families through Five Generations," Vol 4, p 37, "Hezekiah Bonham does not appear in the Hunterdon Co. court records but is mentioned in the following document, none of which mention a second wife or any other children." It also states "This claim may have originated in misinterpretation of the will of Samuel Hunt of Maidenhead, Hunterdon Co, dated 15 Jan 1717/8 in which he decreed that his real estate was to be partititioned among Samuel Hunt's heirs by son Samuel, by Hezekiah Bonham, and by John Prince."
According to "The Bonham Family" by Samuel J. Bonham, pg 9, she was Ann Hunt, daughter of Ralph or Samuel Hunt. This theory is derived from the will of Samuel Hunt, New Jersey Archives, Vol. 21, p 248.
According to "Bonham and Related Family Lines" by H. E. Bonham 1996, says on page 229, that Hezekiah's second wife was Mary Bishop, daughter of David & Mary (Alger) Bishop according to the will of David Bishop 07 Jan 1684 where he mentions a Hezekiah Bonham married to his daughter Mary. However, in 1684 Hezekiah, son of Nicholas, was 17 years old and it was four years later that he married Mary Dunn in 1690. There must have been another Hezekiah Bonham; although, according to references, there was no evidence of another Hezekiah Bonham.

Hezekiah* married Mary Dunn before Oct 1691 in Middlesex Co, New Jersey. Mary (daughter of Hugh Dunn, (Immigrant) and Elizabeth Drake, (immigrant)) was born on 19 Jan 1672 in Piscataway Twp, Middlesex Co, New Jersey; died on 7 Nov 1699 in Maidenhead, Hunterdon Co, New Jersey. Notes:

Amariah Bonham married about 1737 in New Jersey. The name of his wife is not known for sure. It could have been Mary Drake the daughter of Francis Drake and Patience Walker. Monnette in First Settlers said he probably married Drake. Other researchers believe his wife was Eunice King or Elizabeth Addy. Still other researchers believe he married Mary or Martje Bebout. This comes from a deed in which John Bebout called Amariah Bonham "friend, co-partner and bro-in-law." However, H. E. Bonham has concluded that John Bebout and Amariah Bonham were married, to sisters, Mary and Eunice King, and were therefor brothers-in-law

In the 1800 census he (Ameriah Boneham) was living alone in West Bethlehem Township, Washington County, Pennsylvania.

Ameriah must have married after the 1800 census and before he made his will.

Genealogy on Amariah Bonham and Mary Drake decendents World Family Tree Vol 2 File 3280 shows his place of birth as Maidenhead, Hunterdon Co, New Jersey. Information posted from George Bonham tree shows Piscataway. However, Hezekiah had moved from Piscataway in 1698 to Hunterdon Co.

    Amariah - 1765

From Bonham, by John H. Bonham on pg 407 "Amariah, probably born about 1707 at one time lived in Amwell, in Hunterdon Co, sold his land there in 1742 and went to live at Piscataway. To Quote from Genealogical Collections: "Amariah Bonham wne of the originial members of the Baptist Church at Scotch Plains, Aug 5, 1747." He was later dismissed, and is so marked on the roll. Eunice Bonham, also a charter member, and perhaps wife of above, died Feb 5, 1758/9 and is marked dismissed on the roll." New Jersey Archives Vol XXII states "The Scotch Plains Baptist Church was constituted Sept 8 1747 by 15 members from the Piscataqua Church." Among the names of persons that the estate of John King of Piscataway owes is Aug 1749, Amariah Bonham is mentioned."

Note: There is an Amariah Bonham listed in Index to 1787 Census of VA, Vol 3, p 55.
Note: Info from Foxlover states that he married Marvtje M. Bebout, who bore all the children, b Hunterdon: Christian 1737 (d 1821 Springboro, Warren Co, OH; Jeriah 1743; Peter 1745; Rebecca 1739; Sarah 1746; Jacob 1741; Jonathan 1749.
"The Bonham Family" also states Mary Bebout with children Jacob, Christine (Absolom Fox), Rebecca (Abraham Johnson) Sarah (Mr. Batey), and Jeriah; and that he married (2), Elizabeth.
    -------------------------
On June 29, 1743, Amariah Bonham of Piscataway conveyed real property in Hunterdon County to Richard Taylor. The day before this same property had been conveyed to Amariah Bonham of Amwell Township by the estate of Peter Sutton of Piscataway. Amariah and his family probably moved from Hunterdon to Middlesex County at about this time.

In 1747 Amariah (Amoriah Bonaham) was one of the original members of the Baptist Church at Scotch Plains in Essex/Union County, New Jersey. The church was formed on September 8, 1747 by fifteen members from the Piscataway Baptist Church who wanted a spiritual center in their own community. Scotch Plains is about ten miles north of Piscataway in Union County, New Jersey but before 1857 it would have been in Essex County.

Amariah and Mary Drake Bonham were marked dismissed from the roll of the Scotch Plains Baptist Church in 1749.

The family moved to Loudoun County, Virginia before 1765 when he was assessed tax there.

An indenture was made on June 22, 1774 between Francis Lightfoot Lee, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, and Amariah Bonham. Lee leased 200 acres in the Parish of Cameron, Loudoun County. The tract began at the road leading to Lane's Mill. The lease was to Amariah Bonham and his heirs for the natural lives of Peter Bonham, John Bonham and Charles Fox (whoever lived the longest). They paid Lee and his children twelve pounds sterling annually beginning the first of December, 1775.

Amariah appeared on the tax rolls of Loudoun County in in 1782.

Peter and John were commissioned as Ensigns in the Loudoun County militia. Jacob died on June 9, 1782 while fighting the British and Indians in the Sandusky Massacre.

Amariah Bonham was assessed tax in Loudoun County in 1787. Scharf reported in his history that in 1788 Peter, Josiah, and Amariah Bonham took "settlers lots" in Maryland west of Fort Cumberland. Amariah gave them up in 1796.

He joined the Heights Town (Hightstown) church before becoming a member of the Kingwood Baptist Church where he was ordained pastor in 1749. Baptists did not recognize formal clergy so he had no more authority than other lay leader. He was also involved in the organization of the Rocksberry (Roxbury) Baptist Church in nearby Morris County.

He was pastor of the Baptist Church, in Hunterdon Co, from 1749 until 1763. He was living in Maryland during the Revolution but served with the N.J. troops. (Bonham Family)
Malachiah was not married to (3) Mary Fox abt. 1756. However, according to Howard E. Bonham's "Bonham & Related Family Lines" 1996, Mary Fox had an illegitimate child with Malachia Bonham, named Malachia born before 07 Feb 1757. She was susded from the church for this misdeed. In 1761, Minister Malachiah Bonham, the supposed father of this child, was excluded from the church where he preached due to this incident.
    ---
An adultery scandal caused Malakiah to be excluded from the church. On February 3, 1757 twelve jurors ruled that

Malakiah Bonham. Yeoman, being a married man, on the first day of April in the 29th year of the Reign of our Now Sovereign Lord King George the Second at Kingwood . . . with one Mary Fox spinster then and there Adultery did commit. . . .? [Supreme Court Cases, Box 371 #20473, New Jersey Archives cited by Marfy Goodspeed].

In 1761, the church minutes noted,

"Mr. Bonham cut off from privileges," and later that year, "Mr. Bonham appeared to express his desire for his place in the church which was denied him."

The final reference to Bonham appeared in the September 5 minutes, "Mr. Bonham continued to be denied place in the church." Hannah Bonham requested and was given a letter of dismission. Hannah Buckingham Heath Bonham made a will in October of 1767, which was probated eleven years later, identifying her as the widow of Malachiah Bonham, Sr., and further indicating that they had no children

The name of the bride in this old record is unreadable, due to the old papers wear and tear. It could be Hannah Heath; the date would fit as she purchased an interest in the mill of her two brothers 30 Jan 1751. By 19 July 1751, she could have married Malachia Bonham. Here, Gregorian dates have been assumed although the Julian calendar was not officially replaced in England and the colonies until 1752.

    Name:
We now have DNA evidence that Malakiah, Amariah and Uriah Bonham share a common ancestor and considering the albeit scanty paper trails we have, that they were brothers. So 3 of the -iahs could have been brothers according to DNA evidence.

What do the results we have to date mean? They show that THESE -iah descendants (of Malakiah, Amariah and Uriah) DID have a common ancestor (who could have been their father, Hezekiah, as speculated) within the time frame our scant paper documentation has indicated.
To "prove" Hezekiah Bonham as the common ancestor, we need a descendant of Samuel Bonham (son by Hezekiah´s first marriage) to participate.

We are extremely close to showing up the Mayflower Association which has denied our "-iah" ancestry, thanks to the efforts of Brownie Mackie for opening a line as to potential approval. We just need these extra tests to be able to prove our case. I do not personally give a hoot about the Mayflower Society, as neither does Brownie, nor Catherine Cooper who has also been working on this project for so many years, but we would like to help those who do and I at least, would like to prove them wrong as to denying people whose lineage is from Hezekiah´s 2nd wife, whoever she was. Whoever SHE was does not matter in this case as it was Hezekiah Sr who was the Mayflower descendant via his Mother, Hannah Fuller.

    Greetings Sherry:
I found your address looking for info on Samuel BONHAM/Ruth BOWYER BONHAM. I am descended from their son, Benjamin, but have so little info.
Can you help me???? Samuel was born in Piscataway, N.J., and Ruth was born ??? France in some records and NJ in others... They were married in Burlington, N.J. Also records I found online show Samuel was buried at Christ's Church, Philadelphia.
    Thank you so much,

    Message Board Post:

I just posted this on the Bonham mail list, and decided to publish it here, as well. It's been a few years that I've looked at all this and the Hezekiah/Ann Hunt issue came up again. But aside from that in looking at my weak links, I'd like to ask if any of you can check what references you have at hand on this succession of these two links:

1 Samuel Bonham - Catherine Ackley (she married 2nd Stephen Jones; lots of paperwork on these husbands, though the name Ackley was given to me and at the moment I'm not questioning that. She died 1809. Of course if you have anything on her maiden name or her family it would be great)
This Samuel I have as b 1748 (NJ or PA) died 1782 Frederick Co, VA. I have 8 children, one being Catherine Bonham b 1777 who married John Madden.

2 Samuel Bonham s/o Samuel Bonham (1714 NJ - 1782 Fred Co) m Ruth Bower, which the Mayflower 5 Generations records this one, I think, along with a brother Benjamin m Elizabeth Ransom, also had a son Samuel b 1780.
However, In reference to this Samuel (1714) (Samuel & Ruth Bower) according to Hazie, p 70, also had a son Samuel b 1748 > son Samuel m Mary Ann Sowers > in a cut & paste someone gave me way back when, this was added "> Daniel S b 1806; John C b 1808, and Amos Ackley b 1809." But pre-1810 b.d.'s wouldn't be Samuel (b 1748) children.
Who are Daniel, John C and Amos Ackley (there's that name again!)

If I can "prove up" these two links, then it looks like I would have my seat on the Mayflower without question since the Samuel/Bower is an accepted desc thru Samuel Bonham/Catherine Anderson; s/o Hezekiah & Mary Dunn.

Thanks so much if you can help me out.
    Sherry

    update 3/2012
*Hazie attributed four additional children to Samuel, Jr. and Ruth Bowyer Bonham, viz., Samuel, III; Peter; Benjamin; and Elam. Of these, Peter was almost certainly the son of Amariah Bonham and, although various civil records attest to the existence of the others, there is no substantial evidence of their parentage. Even so, it is probable, even likely, that at least some of them are descended from Nicholas Bonham. Nevertheless, Howard Bonham concluded that Samuel and Ruth Bonham had no children with the possible exception of Catherine, who died as a young child.

    http://web.pdx.edu/~davide/gene/Bonham_Samuel.htm

note: Also, wills of Ruth Bowyer Bonham, as well as her mother, Sarah both had wills naming grandchildren and other relations. Neither included any child born to Samuel and Ruth (Catherine was already deceased by then.) So, the children previously attributed to them belong to somebody else.

    Residence:
sold to George Eyre of Burlington, property in the Libertie of Trenton, adjoining the Presbyterian Burying Ground of Trenton. The lots had been devised to Samuel Bonham and his brother Ephraim by their grandfather Enoch Anderson (otherwise Andrus or Andrews).

Samuel married Ruth Bowyer on 29 May 1747 in Burlington Co, New Jersey/Pennsylvania. Ruth (daughter of John Bowyer and Sarah Hastings) was born in 1727 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; died on 3 May 1806 in Pennsylvania. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Children:
    1. 157. Catherine Bonham  Descendancy chart to this point was born in 1749 in New Jersey; died on 2 Jan 1750 in Christ Church, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
    2. 158. Benjamin Bonham, (not son of Samuel & Ruth Bowyer)  Descendancy chart to this point was born in 1754 in Hunterdon Co, New Jersey; died after 1811 in Luzerne City, Union Co, Pennsylvania.
    3. 159. Elam Bonham, (not son of Samuel & Ruth Bowyer)  Descendancy chart to this point was born in 1756 in New Jersey; died after 1800 in Brantford, Brant, Canada.

  28. 71.  Ephraim (MF) Bonham, Sr Descendancy chart to this point (26.Samuel3, 6.Hezekiah*2, 1.Hannah*1) was born on 14 Feb 1716 in Hunterdon Co, New Jersey; died after 1781 in of, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Property: 23 May 1745, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; for sale ad
    • Other-Begin: Jul 1774, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
    • Other-Begin: 1777, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
    • Residence: Between 1780 and 1781, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; tax list

    Notes:

He was a maker of tallow candles.

In 1745 he advertised lots for sale in Philadelphia where he was on the tax lists from 1769 to 1781 and, according to the amount of taxes he paid, he must have been a very wealthy man. In 1774 he was appointed election inspector. In 1776 he was a colonel in the Revolutionary forces.

*NOTE: Hazie Book (Revised 1973) pgs 25-26; Ephram b ca 1728 listed as son of Samuel Bonham & Catherine Anderson m Margaret Jarratt in Phil 5 Mar 1761.
However, there was a Ephraim Bonom m Marget who were members of the Swedish church (not Christ Church) who appear to be a different family, and not this Ephraim. They had a son Robert, born in Philadelphia, who was baptized in the Swede church on 7 Nov 1761. (Pennsylvania Births, Phil. Co, 1644-1765, @ 1994 John T. Humphrey)

Note: Due to the controversy of the 2nd marriage of Hezekiah between the "Mayflower, Families through Five Generations," and the Monnette studies, due to the incredible number of births in this family and their dates, due to the naming pattern of "iah" and Ephraim being "stuck" in the middle, due to the fact that Samuel Bonham/Catherine Anderson's son Samuel was in Philadelphia and none of these "iah" brothers were apparently in Philly,(with the exception of Amariah, who died in Washington Co, PA), the fact that a Samuel Bonham signed Mabra Madden's will, it seems apparent that the Ephraim Bonham who married Susannah Jones would seem more likely Ephraim Bonham, son of Samuel/Anderson rather than son of Hezekiah, as is indicated in the Bonham research.

DAR: Ephraim Bonham departed this life May 22 1785 aged 69 years 3 months.
    "Bible Records, Bible dated 1753.

(Was James Morris son of John or Blaithwaite? Who was Joseph?)

    Notes:

Joseph was living in Loudoun Co as early as 1775 (tax record). In 1795 he moved to Wythe Co and died there in about 1804. His will mentions his wife Naomy, sons William and Hezekiah, daughters Cathy Howell, Zilphy Davis, Rachel Weiss, Betsy Woods, and another son or grandson Ephraim. The will is probated in Feb 1804. "The Bonham Family" does not show a son Ephraim.

    -------------------
The parentage of Joseph Bonham is a vexed question, as is the year and location of his birth. Within this context, he has commonly been regarded by many researchers as a son of Jacob and Polly Warford Bonham, born about 1751 in Chester County, Pennsylvania, which lies in the extreme southeastern corner of the present state. Even so, this birth year seems too late and appears to derive primarily from the work of E. B. Hazie in the various editions of his book on the Bonham family, which was itself a revision of an earlier work by E. L. Smith.

Moreover, according to research published more recently by Howard E. Bonham, and also cited by Ms. Cecilia B. Parke, a historian of the Parke family, in the 1750s and 1760s Joseph Bonham was resident in the household of his uncle and aunt, Cornelius and Catherine Runyon Anderson, in Hunterdon County. Of course, such an arrangement would be indicative of a close family relationship. This is further supported by archived New Jersey civil records confirming that Joseph Bonham was a witness to the will of Cornelius Anderson, which was made in Hunterdon County on December 6, 1765, and proved August 19, 1768.1 Clearly, according to English common law as it then prevailed in the American colonies, this implies that Joseph must have been at least twenty-one years of age in 1765. Therefore, his birth could have been no later than 1744 and was probably earlier, perhaps, 1740 or before. Accordingly, this suggests that he had been taken in by his aunt and uncle after the deaths of his parents and that rather than a grandson, Joseph was actually a younger son of Hezekiah, Jr., and Martha Runyon Bonham. Indeed, such a presumption is clearly consistent with "family lore", again, included in H. E. Bonham's excellent work, which asserted that Joseph Bonham was born the same year that his Grandfather Bonham died, i.e., about 1732. Concomitantly, it would seem almost certain that he must have been born in New Jersey, probably in Hunterdon County, although, the period 1735 to 1740 is, perhaps, marginally more plausible.2 In any case, there can be little doubt that Joseph Bonham was a direct descendant of Nicholas Bonham, who as a child was an immigrant to New England and as an adult was an early settler of the East Jersey Province. Subsequently, through his son, Hezekiah, he became the common ancestor of a very large extended family, which according to documentary sources as well as family tradition, moved in stages south and westward through New Jersey into Pennsylvania, Virginia, and beyond.

    Notes:

    from Tom - Bishopline@aol - to JJReedy, Nov 27 1998:
Reading over my Bonham notes.... it's still not clear who the parents of the Bonhams who married Maddens were.
Here's what I believe to be children of Aaron Bonham.
    Ann b ca 1771 m Thomas Weathers
    Jonathan b ca 1773
    Aaron b 1776
    Senrah b 1778, m Joseph Boxwell
    Samuel b ca 1778 m Nancy (..)
    Moses, b ca 1782 m Ann Marquis
    Martha, b ca 1791 m Jonathan Paine.
    Possibly Rachel, b 1786, m William Howell.

The Catherine who married Stephen Jones was the widow of Samuel Bonham, Frederick Co., Minute Book 1809-1812, page 32 - "the noncupative will of Catharine Jones, decd, widow of Stephen Jones, decd, whereby on 28th of Feb she devised and beqed all her estate to her children by her first husband Samuel Bonham, decd, and left the management thereof to her son Samuel Bonham was proved agreeably to law by the oaths of Philip Christian (sp -Chastain? - see footnote 1 below) and Jane Madden."
Also, the same book, page 16, 6 Mar 1809, "Motion of Samuel Bonham ordered that John Gannt (John Gant was appraiser for Charlotte Madden's estate in 1821- also appraiser of slave of Jacob Madden on 2 Nov 1824) and Jemimah his wife, Thomas sey and Keziah his wife, be summoned to 1 day of April Court to show cause why the nuncupative will of Catherine Jones, decd, should not be proved and established agreeably to Law."
Unfortunately I couldn't find any record of the nuncupative will. Perhaps it's tucked away in the Frederick county courthouse somewhere. I also bet there was some court suit somewhere, but to find that you would have to spend a full week ie Frederick courthouse looking through the stuff.
Having said that, I still think the Madden married daughters of Samuel and Catherine Bonham. It's just that the Maddens aren't mentioned in any records with Aaron Bonham. In 1792, Aaron moved from the Opequon area (where Samuel moved to i6 and died there in 1782) about 10 miles east to the Blue Ridge. Then around 1806 he moved to Loudon County, then 1812 to Ohio. None of the Maddens followed in his 'footsteps.' Aaron's sons Samuel and Aaron and Jonathan followed him, as did his daughters Martha and Ann.
John Madden's plat of 400 acres in 1751 is very near where Samuel Bonham moved in 1776 (he bought the land from Eckline.)
Strange enough, there was also a John Bishop in that area and it's hard to place him, but he probably connects with my family. There's a Fred Co Legislative petition that has Samuel Bishop and Aron Bonham's signature side by side. Samuel Bom, son of Aaron, was living next door to my John Bishop in Ohio in 1820.
Another thing - there's an 1811 Fred Co legislative petition with the signature of Smauel Boman (this read like an m, but is surely an n) and the names near his are Mabry Madden and William Madden.
In 1811 Samuel Bonham (son of Aaron) was in Loudoun Co with my John Bishop on the personal property tax lists. So, the above Samuel Bonham is the son of Samuel Bonham and Catherine.
See what I mean? Most of the time, I see the Maddens with the Samuel & Catherine folks, not the Aaron folks. But I don't have any conclusive proof and it's still an open question. Just need to find an elusive record or two. But my bets are that the Bonham girls who married Maddens were children of Samuel & Catherine Bonham.

    Name:
many many DNA matches who are descended from the Runyons, which is a strong case that Samuel is indeed son of Hezekiah Jr. and Martha Runyon. However, guess it's possible there could be some other connection to explain these matches; but for now looks promising.

This battle was declared a "draw" between the English and American troups. He also, in 1792, served in Hunterdon Militia. Three years before his death, he was granted a pension for his service. From Old COCHRAN genealogy written early 1900's:
"After the close of the Rev. War, Zedekiah Bonham settled on a farm in the Jerseys. He was married to Prudence Heath, a woman of Dutch descent. From here they started in a covered wagon for Otsego, NY, but winter was coming on, and they were compelled on account of snowdrifts, to stop at Mt. Pleasant, PA. Here he purchased a farm, where a daughter of Harriette Houser now resides, and erected a grist mill on the Youghiogheny River. When the War of 1812 broke out, he enlisted and was wounded in a limb. On returning home, he became a weaver of coverlids and of woolen cloth." His line of descendents is traced in this old unpublished genealogy.
