    WILLIAM Doak

Baptised in 1747, William was already in what became Tennessee when his father's will was written in 1787. In common with his brothers Samuel and David he had served in Captain Robert Doak's company of Fincastle County militia in 1774. During the Revolutionary War he fought at King's Mountain and probably also at the Battle of Guilford Courthouse, holding the rank of Captain. He settled in Knox County, "territory south of the river Ohio", and a deed in the Wythe County, Virginia records gives his wife's name as Elizabeth. In 1804, his name appears among those of the first justices appointed in Dickson County, Tennessee. Two of his sons, Thomas and William, settled in Lincoln County, Tennessee and then moved to Madison County, Tennessee. William, who had married Jane Wilson and was a Captain in the War of 1812, died in Madison County in 1849. Thomas had moved to Dyer County, Tennessee, where he died in 1852. His widow, née Elizabeth Edmiston, survived him. The daughters of the elder William included Mary, who married William McMillen in 1792, and Amelia (Milly), who married John Gibson in 1800.

    Notes:

DAVID Doak (ii) He was married in 1773 to Mary Hanna, an older sister of Margaret, who would marry his brother Alexander. Their mother, Martha, was "reputed" to have been née Doak - it is an intriguing puzzle as to whether she was a daughter of John Doak of North Carolina, which seems more likely, or of David (i). Two of David (ii)'s sons married the Thompson sisters, Lydia and Rachel. John spent some time in Campbell County, Tennessee, before moving on to Pike County, Missouri and then to Pike County, Illinois. In 1850, John's age is given on the census as 69. Robert, however, died in Tazewell County, Virginia, in 1818 and his widow Rachel appears on the 1820 census as a head of household with children.

    Research Notes:
There are records that indicate Robert, son of David, died in 1774; but David (i) left land to "son Robert" in 1787 - explanation is that there was a 2nd Robert, named after the deceased 1st Robert.

Also, records seem to indicate a 3rd Robert, b bet 1779 and 1780 who also seems to be son of David (i). With this birth date, he would be son of David's 2nd wife, Mary (..)
    (see Robert (I53217)
    (added 23 May 2015)

Here are some thoughts on why that doesn't seem likely and that David had only one Robert, and the one who died in 1774 was somebody else - perhaps the immigrant.:

robert doak (elder Robert - maybe imm?)
    b bef 1746 (c 1720 is certainly before)

    signed petition 1767-1768
    died 1774
    father's will 1787
"my Sons Robert & Thomas have that part of the Patent Land
that Lies on the South side of Reed creek to be Equally [sic] Divided Between them" (linking Robert & Thomas, so they're close in age, grown sons, not little kids.
If the Robert mentioned in the will was named after his deceased brother Robert - he would be no more than 13 when the will was written. This is just not likely.)

1773 tithables: New River (what county is that?)
"Captain Doak's list, as David Doack and son David. Robert, William, and Samuel Doak were listed separately (Kegley, p. 29)."
(Thomas is probably just short of age to show up on 1773 tithables with the other brothers; so born c1753 or after. so if he was at least 21 when his father died, (1766) then born approximately bet 1753 and 1766

entries about Wolf Hill Track 1769
These events are ascribed to Robert, son of David, however, I think these apply to an older Robert, perhaps immigrant Robert (see Robert Doak b c 1720). For these events to belong to this Robert, he would have had to be older than William, even first born, and David's will does not imply that to be the case.

These entries from 1767-1770 have been ascribed to the elder Robert Doak, son of David, who died in 1774; but it doesn't seem logical. For now, I'm looking at the possibility that they are instead referring to the Immigrant Robert.

3/1767-3/1768, Robert and William Doack signed an Augusta Co. petition. (S) Chronicles, P497.

6/22/1769, Following recommended for appointment as Justices: Robert Doage (S) Chronicles P157. [Robert a licensed surveyor and Justice of the Peace of Fincastle Co. (now Wythe Co.)]

8/16/1769, Following recommended as Justices, viz: Robert Doage (S) Chronicles, P158.

1769, Robert Doke said he was agent for Dr. Thomas Walker to lay off the Wolf Hill tract. In November same year he went and chose a tract and built a cabin on it and in 1770 moved there.

1772, Robert on list of Tithables for Capt. Doak's Company as David Doack's son.

Bef. 5/2/1775, Robert died. (S) Brother William granted Letters of Administration for his estate.

    http://www.teachergenealogist007.com/2010/03/bell-248.html

    - these must be events of the older Robert. They indicate a mature man. I do think the younger Robert was born bef 1752, but not that much before, and he was closer in age to the brothers mentioned together in the tithables of 1773.

    There is a marriage license:
3/28/1774, Robert Doack issued a marriage license in Augusta Co -- Doubtful that Robert who died in 1774 was a newly wed.
This newlywed Robert is said to be Robert who died in 1774's son. Maybe. But David's Robert would be right age to marry in 1774, as well.

4/18/1787, Militia officers recommended: Captains, Robert Doak. (S) Chronicles of the Scotch-Irish Settlement in VA, P249.
This entry is also ascribed to a son of the elder Robert, which could be the case, but again, it could be David's Robert.

What I'm coming up with is David's oldest child was Wm, b bef Nov 1747 (christening date) and his last child was probably Mary b aft 1776 (she's younger than the 3 girls who were under 18 in 1787 at the time of the will.) If David had Wm at, say, 25, then b c1722; 54 when Mary born and dying at age ~62, which is a good age to have grown kids and kids still at home. I think estimating his age at 1710 is maybe too early. He was more likely closer to the younger of the immigrant children.

Lastly, perhaps one wrench the mix is the entry:
Bef. 5/2/1775, Robert died. (S) Brother William granted Letters of Administration for his estate.

My #1 question on this is who included the words "brother William"?
Since Robert and William Doak (I believe uncle and nephew) signed the petition earlier in 1767, it's easy to assume they were brothers, then seeing a William as administrator of the will would lead one to think the same William and conclude a brother. There is no William immigrant known of; so William, son of David, could have been admin for his uncle, though, granted, that's not a likely scenario. Does the document say "brother"? Was it inserted later?
With all the considerations laid out above, this mention of brother William, which we don't know where it came from, and considering the fact that there are certainly some Doaks that we haven't found yet -- this isn't enough to adjust everything else to try to fit this "brother William" citation.

Robert married (Mrs. Robert) Doak on 28 Mar 1774 in Augusta Co, Virginia. (Mrs. was born about 1750; died after 1775 in of, Augusta Co, Virginia. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

John, of Lincoln County, Tennessee, died during the War of 1812 at New Orleans in 1815 and his brother Samuel S. Doak was one of two administrators. The other, William Shaw, was a brother of his widow Sarah. Samuel S. Doak died in 1817 and it was David, then of Adair County, Kentucky, who administered his estate rather than either Thomas or William. His known daughters were Betsy, Peggy - both unmarried in 1813, and their sister who had died in 1795 in Knox County, Mary Weakly Doak.

    DOAK-CLARK

William Doak, born June 27, 1789 in North Carolina [1], was living in Middle Tennessee when he served in a company of Tennessee mounted gunmen during the War of 1812. He was married to Jane Wilson (July 17, 1787-Sept. 17, 1841). They moved into Madison County in its first wave of settlers, establishing a farm adjacent to what became Brown's Methodist Church. Doak acquired several tracts of land by means of which he became the owner of several hundred acres of land, the most of it located in Civil District 14. The Doaks were members of Brown's Methodist Episcopal Church, South and several of them were buried in its burial ground. William Doak died January 17, 1849.

William and Jane (Wilson) Doak had children:[2]

    l. Lucretia Doak, born December 21, 1812;

    2. Alfred William Doak, born August 27, 1814; he bought land locally in 1837 and sold out two years later; [3]

    3. Herrian Doak, born February 14, 1816.

    4. Gibson Doak, born November 2, 1817; died December 26, 1845.

    5. Amanda Alvira Doak, born September 5, 1819.

    6. John Brown Doak, born May 24, 1823; died November 18, 1845.

    7. Thomas Jefferson Doak, born May 5, 1825; died Jan. 8, 1860, unmarried.

    8. Mary Jane Doak, born November 24, 1826.

    9. William Doak, born December 29, 1828; died January 27, 1846.

    10. Eunice Ann Doak, born July 10, 1830; married Rufus Mortimer Mason; for whose family, see the Mason family data in this book.

Mary Jane Doak (November 24, 1826-May 16, 1906) was married to John Franklin Clark (1822-June 19, 1867), January 30, 1849 (a few days after her father's death), who was a son of Jonas Clark, "born in Maryland in 1759; and went to North Carolina at an early age. He volunteered in the Revolutionary War, when eighteen years of age and served four years /militiaman, Salisbury District/. He afterward drew a pension of $220 per year, for his services. He came to Tennessee in 1830. His wife, whose maiden name was Ann Alexander, was born in North Carolina, in 1787, and was Jonas Clark's third wife. /They were married in Mecklenburg Co. , March 31, 1818. ! She and her husband were members of the Presbyterian Church and belonged to the Steel Creek congregation. The father died in /Madison County in/ 1845 and his wife in 1858." [4]

In April of 1827, Jonas Clark, then living in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, deeded to his sons, John Franklin Clark and Edwin Alexander Clark, 480 acres in Madison County, part of a 750 acre grant to him, in S. D. 9, Range 2, Section 10 (Grant #22355), dated August 10, 1824. John Rudesell was-to keep this land in trust for the younger Clarks.[5]

This large tract of ground lay to the west and south of what became Claybrook. In March of 1850, the younger Clarks sold this 480 acres to Joseph Fogg (died 1859) for $3000; being in the southeast corner of the original 750 acre tract.[6]

Mary Jane Doak and her husband, John F. Clark, inherited the 717 acre Russell Goodrich tract and went to live upon it and on January 21, 1852, they made over a one-third interest in this tract, on which they were then living, to his brother, Edwin A. Clark, along with seventeen slaves.[7] The Clarks sold this tract and one other to Robert W. Hall in 1861.[8]

After his death in June 1867 John F. Clark's estate was administered by Rufus M. Mason, who had married Clark's youngest sister-in-law, Eunice.[9] Their children were Ann, Edwin, Thomas, Susan, Mary Elizabeth Jane (Lizzie, who was blind) and John Harvey Clark.

    (Page 46)

Major Edwin Alexander Clark (January 21, 1826-May 8, 1900) was raised "on a farm and at the age of fifteen left home and began clerking for $60 per annum. With the exception of ten months, spent in the Mexican war /Co. F, Second Tennessee Infantry Regiment, May 1846; medical discharge, April 1847/, he clerked until 1849, but with increased wages, after the first year. Some time after the close of the Mexican war, he went to California, where he remained until 1851. In 1852 he married Martha Childress of Springfield, Tenn., daughter of George and Martha (Murdoch) Childress." She was born January 1, 1835 and died August 7, 1869. In May of 1881, Major Clark "married Mary M. Black of Henderson County. She was born in 1843." Major Clark and his brother "engaged in the mercantile business at Cotton Grove, about 1852 and continued the same for six years." [10] He then spent four years doing business at different points. In 1862, as captain, and S. D. Barnett as first lieutenant, assisted in the organization of the Fifty-first Tennessee Regiment and Clark was elected major. He was captured at Fort Donelson and was exchanged sometime later. "On account of physical disability, he was unable to engage longer in the service and returned home and resumed mercantile business at Spring Creek, in partnership with Herron & Mason, continuing five years. The following two years were spent in farming and he then came to Jackson and began speculating in cotton," losing money thereby. He clerked for a while, served as county tax collector, 1874-1875; county court clerk, 1878-1886. Clark was a Democrat and member of the Presbyterian Church. He died in Louisville, Kentucky. Both husband and wife are buried in Brown's Methodist Cemetery.[11]

William Littlefield had legal title to this land by chancery order, $4500 having been paid by William Doak so that the 808.4 acres were his totally. January l, 1849; recorded March 20, 1849. Deed Book 10, page 206, shows that William Littlefield acquired this tract by purchase, probably from E. B. Littlefield's estate, for $3233, by Chancery Court order, Franklin, Tennessee, November 25, 1845; recorded January 13, 1845.).

    D. WILLIAM DOAK's residence was located near Brown's (Bethany) Methodist Episcopal Church, South. His daughter, Mary Jane Doak, married John Franklin Clark. They lived on the Doak 744.5 acres, as reduced from the original 1000 acres to Goodrich. In a deed dated January 1852, John F. Clark conveyed an interest in the Doak tract to his brother, Edwin A. Clark, the "same now being in the possession of John F. Clark and on which he now lives." William Doak had died in 1849. (Deed Book 15, page 483) William Doak had sold 61 acres of the Goodrich tract to John M. Barnett, at Barnett's southwest corner and in the northeast corner of the 800 acres, February 16, 1846; recorded Jan. 14, 1851. (Deed Book 14, page 264) Thomas J. Doak, William Doak's administrator, made a clear deed to J. M. Barnett for this 61 acres, having received the full $399.74 paid for it. January 24, 1851; recorded January 28, 1851. (Deed Book 14, page 306) There were, by the deeds, at least, 744 acres left of the Doak tract after Barnett's purchase..

    E. Madison. County Deed Book 23, page 43
JOHN F. CLARK and wife, MARY J. CLARK, formerly Doak, and E. A. CLARK of Madison County, Tenn., sold to ROBERT W. HALL of Henderson County, Tenn., 744.5 acres, remnant of the Goodrich 1000 acres, S.D. 9, R. 2, Sec. 10, Civil District 12, for $12,000, March 29, 1861; recorded May 12, 1861. Began at a stake in Thomas F. Berry's northwest corner and J. M. Barnett's corner, including a section of the east boundary line of the 1000 acres and its southeast corner; touched the northeast corner of entry #670 for 139 acres; on the southwest and west bordered by Replogle land; that of Martin B. Key; and Butler's corner and with his line to the beginning stake..

Robert W. Hall also purchased, for $2000, from the Clarks, the 318.4 acres on the south of the Goodrich tract, in Civil District 13. March 29, 1861; recorded May 16, 1861. (Deed Book 23, page 45) John F. and E. A. Clark had purchased this 318 acres from Thornton Hamlet, for $301. 85, January 1, 1854; recorded Dec. 30, 1854. Began at southwest corner of B. D. Acree's occupant claim and the southwest corner of Mark Langston; bordered some of the Replogle land also. (Deed Book 17, page 614) This was largely hilly, forested real estate..

Robert W. Hall (1813-1890), born near Huntsville, Alabama, moved at age 26 to Reynoldsburg on the Tennessee River, opposite Pilot Knob in Benton County, a place of considerable trade at the time, where he clerked; moved in 1843 to Lexington, Tennessee where he became a successful merchant in his own right; in 1860, he moved to a farm located about 2.5 miles west of Lexington; moved in 1866 to Jackson, Tennessee where he lived thereafter. He and his wife are buried under tall tombstones in Riverside Cemetery in Jackson.[1] R. W. Hall owned the old Goodrich-Doak tract during the Civil War. He sold it soon afterwards for so much less than he had paid for it, suggesting that a substantial residence had stood on the property and had been destroyed; this in addition to a deflated economy and lowered assessments after the war. Hall is not known to have suffered drastic financial difficulties at this time..

1840s and 1850s Pike Counties Missouri and Illinois

In approximately the mid 20th century two ladies came to the Waggoner Family Cemetery, which is located about four miles south of Pittsfield in Pike County, Illinois. They claimed that the Doaks were tall people and prone to TB, which was then usually fatal. The Doaks came to Pike County, Illinois from the area of Frankfurd, Missouri in Pike County, Missouri. Like the Waggoners, they left Missouri and crossed into Pike County, Illinois.

The Doaks were a pioneer family and the members of the family of John and Lydia Doak left Missouri and followed the Oregon Trail in the 1830's and settled in Oregon. It is thought that one of the Doaks died on the trail before reaching Oregon. John and Lydia Doak and, at least their daughter Caroline, crossed with them into Pike County, Illinois and settled in Martinsburg Township. Caroline married Green Caston Waggoner in 1845 in Pittsfield, Illinois.

Description: The John Doak who m Lydia Thompson WAS a son of David (ii) & Mary Hanna

    Ralph
    ralphdoak@gmail.com

    Property:
1802, John signed as security to a land sale of his brother Thomas.

    note by ss:
This transaction is said to be sons of Imm David, but it seems more likely they are sons of David Jr.
1802 land sale: Thomas buying, needed security of brother John. If John b low end of 1781-1790; then just turning 21 and probably needed a security. But John who signed the security, son of Imm Dave, was already in his 40s and appeared to be younger than the thomas mentioned in father's will. Why would baby bro be signing for security?
No, the John who signed for Thomas (1781-1790 - and would have to be 1781 - not 1790) - would be another John older bro to Thomas, grandsons Imm Dave.

It makes more sense that the John who provided security for baby bro Thomas is John (John of Wythe) son of David Jr.; and Thomas is also son of David Jr. that we didn't have yet.

To further validate this theory, John, who married Lydia, gave his year of birth as 1781 in 1850 census.

1840 census shows an A.J. Doak (b 1811-1820) in same community, but not on same page. Age would be consistent to be John's oldest son.
In 1850 Louisiana, Pike Co, Missouri, there are four Doak children living with 4 respective families - Orphans? - and perhaps children of A.J.? One is named Jackson. no relationship has been discovered of any of these families to the Doaks

    • Birth: Between 1781 and 1790; 1840 census
    • Property: Abt 1802, Wythe Co, Virginia
    • Census: 1840, Polk Co, Missouri
    • Will: 28 Dec 1840, Polk Co, Missouri; probate date

    Notes:

    Note by ss:
The Thomas of Polk Co, Missouri is thought to be youngest of Imm David Doak, however, it seems more likely that this Thomas is a son of Imm. David's son David Jr,because of these considerations:

The 1840 Polk County Missouri census has his age group as 50-59. That means 1781-1790.
Imm Dave died 1787; his will: "Sons Robert and Thomas have that part of Old Patent Land that lies on the South side of Reed creek to be Equally Divided Between them".
Leaving land to at most an 6-yr-old?
Born to David Sr. when he was over 70? If that's the case, Thomas would have to be 2nd wife's child and she would be pushing 50.

In Imm David's will he teamed up Thomas and Robert to divide the land - so more likely they were closer in age. Robert was recorded as paying tithables in 1773; so at least 21, meaning he was born 1751 or 1752. It's not likely that Imm David would have left land to be shared equally between a 35 y-o and a 6 y-o.

my note on his age calculation:
((1773 tithables: New River (what county is that?)
"Captain Doak's list, as David Doack and son David. Robert, William, and Samuel Doak were listed separately (Kegley, p. 29)."

Thomas is probably just short of age to show up on 1773 tithables; so born c1753 or after. so if he was at least 21 when his father died,(1766) then born bet 1753 and 1766
    ~ss))

    Property:
~1802, John signed as security to a land sale of his brother Thomas.

~1802, John signed as security to a land sale of his brother Thomas.
