    Notes:

    Name:
Some people have continued to use the surname of DUNLIN for this woman. This is purely incorrect and unproven, yet alone made up by someone who was paid to do research and made a mistake. Since then individuals continue to use an unproven surname for this woman. I wish everyone to stop using DUNLIN as her surname! If you can't prove it, don't use it!

    Date: January 17, 1781
    Location: Cowpens, South Carolina
Commanders: Continental Brig. General Daniel Morgan defeated British Lt. Colonel Bonastre Tarleton
New Southern Commander Maj. General Nathanael Greene determined that he needed time to rehabilitate his army. He decided to split his force and assigned command of the more mobile force to Brig. General Daniel Morgan. British Lt. General Charles Cornwallis recognized the strategy and sent his own mobile force under Lt. Colonel Banastre Tarleton after Morgan.
After several weeks of maneuvering, General Morgan finally had to choose his ground before Lt. Colonel Tarleton overran him. He settled on Cowpens, South Carolina. He counted on British expectations of a militia retreat as it had at Camden, so that when Andrew Pickens' militia withdrew as planned, the British became undisciplined and broke ranks. This loss of discipline allowed the ordered actions of the Continentals to thoroughly rout the British and destroy General Cornwallis' light troops.

They also found and brought in a child that was taken by the Indians from a company they defeated about the first of March. It had straggled off from their camp whhilst they were making the attack on the company of the 26th---The children had suffered very much for want of food.

    Notes:

JOHN CORDER III OF VIRGINIA (1761-1849)

John Corder was presumably born in Fauquier County, Virginia since he enlisted in the Revolutionary War in 1778 at 17 years of age and since he was living near Fiery Run Meeting House in Fauquier County at that time. Records also indicate that he had a brother named James Corder who also served in the Revolutionary War. 1.(In checking his father's record there is no James listed as a child and there is no mention of a James as a son in his fathers Will).

The Revolutionary War pension records for John Corder III indicate that he served for two years as a private in Captain William Fiels's Company, Colonel George Gibson's Regiment. He was furloughed due to sickness and was later drafted into the Virginia Militia for three months. He served the three months as a private in Captain John Thomas Chunn's Company, Colonel Armistead Churchill's Virginia Regiment and was discharged in June of 1781. He was involved in a skirmish near Hollow Spring Located below Richmond, Virginia.

Upon making application for his pension in 1832, John Corder III was required to have affidavits presented which acknowledged that he did, in fact, serve in the war as he claimed. This was necessary because the Army records carried the name John "Carder". The affidavits were needed to substantiate his claim that he was the same person whose name appeared on the pension rolls as John "Carder". A certificate of pension (No. 30628) was finally issued to John Corder on May 10, 1836 when he was 75 years of age. His pension was set at $80 per year. He was paid $440 in arrears (from effective date of the pension act to date of pension approval).

In preparing his own account of his Revolutionary War record, John Corder stated that most of his two years of service were in and around Williamsburg, Virginia. He stated that he knew General Lafayette who commanded, at that time, about 300 regular soldiers. He further swore an affidavit to the effect that he was in the habit of writing his name "Corder" but that in former times when written by persons other than himself, it was frequently written "Carder". He stated that he had frequently received small orders directed to him in which his name was written "Carder", but that he always took in those orders knowing it to be a mistake when his name was written as such. He stated that, as a result of the foregoing, he believed himself to be the identical person whose name was written John "Carder" on the Virginia Book of Settlements. He further stated that he had not previously applied for any pensions because he thought that to do so one had to have been in need circumstances and that he was not in needy circumstances.

According to Revolutionary War records, John Corder had a brother who also served in that war. (2.)(the only brother he had that was old enough to be in the war was Joel who was older than him). One record indicates that John Corder made application for his brother's bounty land. John Corder stated that his brother, James Corder marched from Culpepper in Captain Benjamin Roberts Rifle Company and that his brother was attached to the Crockett's Regiment.

This claim was denied because "that this James Corder, whose bounty land is now asked for: because it is not pretended, nor does it appear, that he, who bounty land is now claimed was ever a non-commissioned officer. It does not appear that John Corder has received bounty land." (Rejection Files: John and James Corder)

In a List of Non-Commissioned Officers and Soldiers of the Virginia Line On Continental Establishment and a list of Non-Commissioned Officers and Soliders of the Virginia State Line, James Corder, soldier in the Cavalry appears in document No. 43 as one that had not received bounty land for service. Since James Corder of the State Line had already received 400 acres, it is to be assumed that the James Corder listed in document # 43 is the brother of John Corder. One can only assume that the lack of records would be to reasons for this James and John Corder failure to receive bounty land for their service. (3)(This was very possibly Joel older brother to John that was killed by the Shawnee Indians in 1794 in Kentucky).

According to his original will (Will Book A, Rappahannock Co. Virginia June 17, 1835), John Corder III was married to Hanna Way (believed to have been about 1783), and she was the mother of his eleven children. They resided in Fauquier Co. Virginia near the Rappahannock (formerly Hedgem an) River. Presumably all of their children were born there. His wife, Hanna may have died sometime between 1835 and 1838 because she is mentioned in his will of 1835 but not in the codicil to the will in 1838. The 1840 census for Rappahannock Co, however, lists a female age 70-80 living in the household of John Corder.

A search of deed records reveals that John Corder bought land across the Rappahannock River in adjacent Rappahannock County on September 22, 1835 for the sum of $2475. It is assumed that he moved to his new residence sometime on or near that date. Deed records also reveal that some of his eight sons had moved across the river in Rappahannock Co. prior to 1835. Perhaps this is the reason John Corder also moved across the river....... to be closer to his sons in his latter years.

The earliest record of a land transaction for a member of the John Corder family was in Culpepper County (this part became Rappahnnock Co in 18 33) was on September 25, 1827. This transaction was between Alexander Corder and John Thompson. Another deed record reveals that his son John IV, owned land in Culpepper Co. at this time also. Another son, Vincent, also owned land in Culpepper County prior to the purchase of land by John Corder III. Land tax records reveal that Vincent was living in Culpepper Co. as early as 1814. Personal property tax records for the 1820's and 1830's lists sons Martin, Elisha, and Elias Corder, all sons of John Corder. Only one of John Corder's eight sons is not listed as owning land in Rappahnnock County prior to purchase of land there by John Corder in 1835. That son was named Elijah.

Personal property tax records for Fauquier County in the early 1830's list the name of John Corder plus the notation of another adult male living in the same household with John Corder. This adult living in the same household with John was either his son, Elijah or perhaps a grandson. It is noted that, according to deed records, John Corder gave 137.5 acres of land to his son Elijah after he moved to Rappahannock Co. This would tend to suggest that it was indeed Elijah who was living in the same household with him in the 1830's, even though Elijah was married in 1831.

Deed records reveal that the eight sons of John Corder lived in or near the villages of Keysville, Flint Hill and Amissville, Virginia. The land purchased by John Corder was located between Flint Hill and Amissvil le near the Rappahnnock River. It is believed to have been in the vicini y of Hackley's Crossroads, Keysville, and the point on the Rappahannock River known as Crawley's (Corder's) Ford.

Four of the sons of John Corder migrated to Missouri around 1839. This date is substantiated by deed records and personal property tax records of Rappahnnock Co, Virginia which list these four sons on the tax books up to 1839. The four sons were Martin, Vincent, Nathan, and John IV. Vincent settled in the northern part of the state in Marion Co. John IV, Martin, and Nathan settled in Lafayette Co. Nathan settled near where the town of Corder is located today, while John and Martin settled near the town of Alma. The exact location of the settlements of the four sons was given by Mrs. Juel (Mary H. ) Corder who lives in Corder Missouri. She is a great granddaughter of Martin Corder. Her husband Juel Corder was a great grandson of Vincent Corder.

The town of Corder, Missouri was evidently named for George W. and Bettie Corder who platted the town in 1879. George W. Corder was a grandson of Nathan Corder, son of John Corder.

The remaining four sons of John Corder, Alexander and Elisha died rather early in life, prior to 1835. Elias remained in Rappahannock Co., near Amissville, until his death on May 15, 1879. Elijah lived in Rappahannock Co. until his death some time between 1840-1841. Some of the children of Elisha and Elias are known to have moved to Missouri also. Aldridge Corder, son of Elias, became the State Senator for Lafayette Co, Missouri. He was educated at the Academy in Warrenton, Farquier Co, Virginia.

According to a marriage record in Rappahannock Co, John Corder married again after the death of his wife Hanna Way Corder. The record states that he was married on August 6, 1845 to Mary Maddox (at the age of 84) approximately 3.5 years before his death on January 24, 1849. John Corder is believed to be buried in the Corder graveyard located approximately 3 miles west of Amissville, Virginia in Rappahannock Co. His son, Elias, and Elias wife Sarah B. and 3 of their children William G., Lelia, and Fannie L. are all buried there also.

The Corder graveyard contains a handsome bronze and concrete marker bearing the name and Revolutionary War record of John Corder. This marker was placed there on January 29, 1958 by Mr. Garnett K. Corder and his son James G. Corder. (They are descendents of Elisha Corder, son of John. The bronze marker was supplied by the U.S. Army Quartermaster upon application for by Mrs. Robert Barnes (sister of Garnett K. Corder) of New Orleans, Louisiana. The marker is a hansome tribute to this Revolutionary War veteran.

Permission was given by the owner to restore the graveyard and a chain link fence has been erected around it.

    ==============================
Very little is known about Bailis Corder in 1995. It is thought the best possibility for his parentage is the will of John Corder, wife Gracy, in Smith Co, Tenn in 1814, which names a son called Bali. This John could be the son of another John, wife Patience, from Fauquier or Culpepper Co. Va, or Caswell Co. NC. Bailis and his wife, Parazade lived in Lincoln and Green Co Kentucky, where some of their children were born, before moving to St. Helena Parish, where Bailis died about 1822. His wife, Paraz ade apparently lived in EBR with her daughter Elizabeth and her husband Ja cob Krumholt after the death of Bailis and in 1844 gave Elizabeth her undivided 1/6 of some property left her by her father Thomas Stone in 1830 in Mercer County, Ky. (Courte sy of Billie Lipscomb of Baton Rouge, a descendant of Elizabeth Krumholt)

    Notes:

Placed as child here only for speculation and study; however, several things make it seem feasible that he comes from this family, probably from John Jr. rather than John III. However, he is not mentioned in John, Jr.\'s will.

New note: Laura Henderson wrote to say that she believes E. R. Corder of Whitley Co KY was actually Edward Corder III, son of Edward and Susannah Oney Corder of Tazewell Co VA. He was living in Wayne Co KY in 1820 with his brother, Stephen Corder, and they had another brother, Richard, who moved to Tennessee. They had a brother named Elijah who died as a young man in Tazewell.

We think that the Edward Corden Sr. who was living in Wayne Co in 1820 (where Blevins families also lived) was born between 1770-1775, which dovetails with your estimated birth dates.

    Old notes continued...
Elisha Corder (b 1786 John Corder/Way) had a son Wm Franklin, called himself Frank.
E.R. is not Elisha because Elisha died in 1828 VA and E.R. was in Caldwell Co, Missouri in 1840 and in Whitley KY in 1830.

    E.R. Corder had a daughter \"Franky.\"

Seeking help with corrections or additions for the children and grandchildren of William and Jane Stone of Cane Creek region of Putnam County, Tennessee. I am a decendant though their granddaughter Polinia Pearlie Patton who married Luke Johnson.

    WILLIAM STONE and JANE WELCH
William Stone Born 1799 Green County, Kentucky Died 16 March 1883 Baxter, Putnam son of Rev. Thomas Stone, a Free-Will Christian Baptist Minister, and Sally Corder. Married Circa 1829 probably in Jackson or White County near Cane Creek.

Jane "Jenny" Welch born 1805 Rutherford County, North Carolina and died after 1880 daughter of John and Mary "Polly" Anderson Welch. Jane Welch had twin children out of wedlock before marrying William P. A. Stone.

Families associated with the Stone-Welch family were the Corders, Huddlestons, Barnes, Bohannons, Maxwells, Pattons, and Choates

In some pedigrees found on Ancestry.com and LDS submission sites, William's wife surname is given as "Ashford" with a marriage date of 1 January 1836 in Cookeville, Putnam, TN. This is an error. In Sumner County TN this marriage is recorded, not in Putnam County and William Stone married Jane "Welch" not Ashford. In most records William Stone has a P. for middle initial. How ever in the 1860 Census his initial was given as A.

The History of Putnam County by Walter S. McClain and published in 1925 stated that Jane Welch's father John Welch came from North Carolina and settled two miles south east of Cookeville about 1820. Chancery Proceedings after his death show that he had accumulated about 750 acres of land in the county. Much of this land went to the illegitimate grandchildren of his daughter Jane "Jennie" Welch who later married William P. Stone.

1820 US Census of Overton Counties TN William Stone born 1775-1794 pages He came to Jackson/Putnam County with his father's family. Unmarried. But living between Cane Creek and Pigeon Roost Creek

25 Sept 1826 William P. Stone granted 25 acres on Cane Creek adjacent Reuben Perkins. Recorded 1 Aug 1827 No. 277 entry no. 995. It was surveyed 1 August 1827 with his father Thomas Stone and presumed brother Alfred Stone acting as witnesses

11 Feb 1830 William P. Stone fifty acres on ridge between Cane Creek and Hutchins Creek adjacent Reuben Perkins, Samuel Richardson, James H. Carr. No. 439 Platt 1558 however a notation indicated that the actual platt survey is missing from the survey book Surveys of Jackson County TN

1830 US Census Jackson County, TN William Stone age 20-30 (Jane Welch Stone) age 20-30 2 females under 5 (Sarah Welch) born 1828 and (Mary Welch) born 1830. Jane's son Jesse Welch with grandfather John Welch and daughter Elvira Welch was with Aunt Mary Ann Choate

Family enumerated between Elijah Carr and William Davis. Two households down from brother Alfred Stone and three from Tabitha Stone nee Conway who had four children and later remarried Jordan K. Harris. She may have been widow of John Stone.

Margaret Stone age 8 (1842) TN.
He owned a farm worth $1200. Enumerated between Alison Morrison and Lewis Conway. Alison Morrison had no land so probably worked for William Stone. Census shows that William P. Stone was one of the ten wealthiest men in District 12.

14 Dec 1853 William P. Stone may have been a preacher like his brothers Corder and Thomas also. A marriage record in White County shows that John Johnson and Ollay (Allie) Broyles were married by a Rev. William Stone.

15 December 1869 Deed book G page 62 Putnam County William P. Stone sold to his son Thomas D. Stone fifty acres on Cane Creek which were originally owned by David Patton, for $250. The property was in Civil District No. 16 and was recorded in Book G page 62. R.L. Gentry and L. R. McClain were witnesses to the deed. William P. Stone probably moved at this time for in 1875 a deed to James W. McHenry states "William Stone's old home tract".

1870 U.S. Census of Putnam County, 1st District Household 179 Post Office Cookeville. There he owned $800 farm and a home worth $500. He is enumerated between son Hiram Stone and daughter Margaret Patton. Next to the Pattons was his son John Stone. His sons and son-in-law were farming his lands. The census taker recorded William's middle initial as "A" which is clearly a mistake. The census taker also gave the initials HW to son James Hiram. Age was 71 (1799) born in KY Jane Stone age 65 (1805) born in NC.

1876 William P. Stone according to a deed recorded 21 Dec 1876 in Book C page 129 lived just north of his son Thomas D. Stone in District 16. He

Quote: "I have recently learned that John Stone (Brother Alfred's son) was dead." Ithought he might have meant Brother in the Church or something of the kind. Now, that, you know only as well as I. My record which is very meager did not have an Alfred in it."

    Notes:

Shepherd was born in Louisiana and married Charlotte Montgomery in St Helena\\\'s Parish. They had 14 children. Part of them were born in Louisiana and part in Texas. Some time after 1848 he moved his family to Texas.

By 1850 Shepherd and Charlotte had moved to Texas. According to one source (poss. Ethel Corder?) they settled first in Colorado City, Mitchell Co**. In 1851 he was on the tax rolls for Mitchell Co. He paid a Poll Tax of .50, State Tax of .50, & County Tax of .25 cents. He remained on the Tax rolls until 1854 when he moved his family to Burnet Co.

**Note that as Terrell Mullins has pointed out, this cannot be correct. In 1851 Colorado City did not exist and neither did Mitchell County. Perhaps they were in Colorado County?

Shepherd and Charlotte lived in Burnet Co. until their deaths. From 1855-1861 Shepherd was on the Tax Rolls for Burnet county, in 1855 he had Property valued at $95, he paid Poll Tax of .75, State tax of .64, and County Tax of .32 cents.

In 1856 Shepherd had the following live stock that was valued at, 2 horses $60, 18 Cattle $90, 1 wagon & 2 Oxen $180, total value $330 dollars.

He paid poll tax .75, state tax .50, & county tax of .50 cents.

In 1857 he paid poll tax .75, state tax $1.00.

1858 no record of taxes being paid.

1859 Shepherd had 2 horses $80, 1 set of tools $20, total value $100.00 dollars.

He paid poll tax $1.00, State tax .68, county tax .68 cents.

1860 Shepherd paid taxes on wagon and Oxen valued at $380.00
He paid Poll tax $1.00, State tax .97, & County tax of .97 cents.

1861 The total value of property was $240.00

He paid Poll tax $1.00, State tax $1.19, & County tax of .85 cents.

Private Shepherd Bayless Corder enlisted 14 May 1862 in San Antonio, serving until his death on 1 Aug 1862. He served in Company I, 3rd Texas Infantry, of the Confederate States of America. He served in Captain Eli Tool\\\'s Company, of the Texas Volunteer Infantry.

    Burnet Co. Texas
from Burnet Co. History; Volume one; By D. Debo

On October 25, 1859, William Barton, Charlotte Cavin, and Sina Harvey deeded seven acres of land to S.B.Corder, John Harvey, and Lewis Thomas, trustees of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, for church and school purposes (Volume E Page 8, DRBC). The location of the property was in Backbone Valley where the Crownover Chapel now stands (1997). Even though the rock structure was begun, the onset of the War Between the States brought a halt to the construction. On November 10, 1873, an \\\"Article of Agreement to Complete the School and Chapel\\\" was filed in Volume I, page 143, DRBC, and the building was finally completed.

You show W A Corder as being buried in Eastland Cemetery. Do you have any info showing this as true. Most people have him as dying in Trinity Co. and believe he is buried there. I have seen this posted somewhere awhile back. Coryell County Deed Book D:325, County Clerks office, Gatesville,
    Texas.

    Notes:

Tarleton Blevins, the eldest son of Stephen, Sr. died intestate probably in early 1841 in Missouri. Stephen Blevins, Sr. was appointed as administrator of his estate on October 2, 1941. Security was posted by Andrew Blevins and Davis B. Wood. Tarleton Blevins' heirs were Stephen Blevins, Sr. and the following brothers and sisters: Daniel Blevins of Caldwell County, Missouri; Elisha Blevins of Bates County, Missouri; Edward Corder,, Ezekiel Blevins, Rebecca Woods (formerly Rebecca Blevins), Rachel Blevins, William Blevins, Riley Blevins, and John Blevins, all of Johnson County, Missouri.

Theory that James, Edward and Franky are siblings and children if E.R. Corder is,
first: E.R. Corder is nearby Daniel Blevins in 1840 Caldwell, MO census. Daniel m Franky Blevins, Daniel's daughter.

second: Tarlton's estate settled by dividing among siblings: Edward Corder listed as a brother as he was the husband of his sister.

third: Rebecca Blevins Woods also listed as a sister. She married 2nd James Corder, as proven by marriage record of James Corder and Rebecca Woods marry.

fourth: James was in Whitley Kentucky, age 20-29 (1811-1820; wife of same age, and a son and dau under 5. The Blevins had lived in Whitley before going to Missouri. Franky Corder (his apparent sister) had married Daniel Blevins there in 1822, and their first two sons were born there in 1825 and 1826. Elisha Blevins, Daniel's brother, also married Polly McKee there in 1819. In fact, Rebecca was born in KY; so likely it was Whitley.
They are in Missouri by 1833 when Rebecca marries and Edward and Frankly's first child is born. (if Rebecca was indeed born 1820, she was only 13!!) So, it looks like the families left KY and went to MO between 1826 and 1833. It's likely that James' 1st family went as well.
By 1850, Rebecca is widowed and head of household with 4 Wood children and one daugher, Nancy Corder. What happened to James' first wife and kids?

The Blevins had been on the move, tracking their path of migration through the birth of their children. The first one were born Virginia, then in Tennessee, then Rebecca in Kentucky.

    Died:
probably died from childbirth. Last child born 1840 and she is not accounted for in the 1840 census record.

Franky married Daniel Boone Blevins on 23 Mar 1822 in Whitley Co, Kentucky. Daniel (son of Stephen Blevins, Sr. and Christina (..) Blevins) was born in 1791 in Virginia; died after 1860 in of, Long Creek, Carroll Co, Arkansas. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Children:
    1. 186. Dr. Stephen T. Blevins  Descendancy chart to this point was born in 1825 in Whitley Co, Kentucky; died after 1860 in of, Long Creek, Carroll Co, Arkansas.
    2. 187. Elisha Blevins  Descendancy chart to this point was born on 1 Mar 1826 in Whitley Co, Kentucky; died on 22 Nov 1903 in Greenwood, Jackson Co, Missouri.
    3. 188. Edward R. Blevins  Descendancy chart to this point was born on 8 May 1832 in Missouri; died on 24 Feb 1901 in Bolivar, Polk Co, Missouri; was buried in Bolivar City Cem, Bolivar, Polk Co, Missouri.
    4. 189. Polly Ann Blevins  Descendancy chart to this point was born in 1834 in Blythe, Caldwell Co, Missouri; died after 1850.
    5. 190. Frances S. Blevins  Descendancy chart to this point was born in 1836 in Blythe, Caldwell Co, Missouri; died after 1840.
    6. 191. Julia Ann Blevins  Descendancy chart to this point was born in 1838 in Blythe, Caldwell Co, Missouri; died after 1840.
    7. 192. Edy C. Blevins  Descendancy chart to this point was born in 1840 in Blythe, Caldwell Co, Missouri; died after 1860 in of, Long Creek, Carroll Co, Arkansas.

  42. 73.  James S. Corder Descendancy chart to this point (23.E.R.3, 5.John2, 1.Patience1) was born about 1805 in Kentucky or North Carolina; died before 1850 in Warrensburg, Johnson Co, Missouri.
