MRS. MARY VIRGINIA CLEEK PASSED PEACEFULLY AWAY LAST SUNDAY

The death of Mrs. Mary Virginia Cleek, which occurred at 1 o'clock Sunday morning, at her home six miles northeast of Orland, removed from our midst one of the few remaining early pioneers of California. Her demise, although hourly expected by her many relatives and friends, came as a shock to the whole community who realized that in the passing of this historic character one of the noblest women Colusa county ever knew had passed to her reward in that better world. Mary Virginia Corder was born in the little town of Flinthill, Rappahannock county, Virginia, on the 25th day of June, 1823. In 1839 she, in company with her parents, journeyed by team over the sparsely traveled road to Missouri, the family locating in Warren, Marion county. It was here, surrounded by the wilds of the wilderness that she grew to womanhood. On March 10, 1817, there was born at the famous resort of Hot Springs, Bath County, Virginia, a boy destined to play a leading part in the early history of California and whose life was closely connected to that of the one whose long and use full life has just been brought to a close - Andrew Sitlington Crawford Cleek. This young man came from a hardy race and inherited that love for adventure, which afterwards prompted him to make the long and perilous journeys across the barren wilderness to the fertile plains of California. While still a young man he moved to Missouri where he met and wooed Mary V. Corder, who on January 28, 1842, became his wife. To this long and happy union four children were born. They were: John W., Vincent Corder, Ann Elizabeth and Eliza J. Cleek. In March 1850, the family, with others, began the long journey across the barren plains of California, settling in August at the old Montgomery place on the Sacramento where a small store and hotel were opened. A hard struggle then ensued for their daily life was beset with danger, there being many wild Indians around them, among whom the dread cholera broke out in the Cleek home in November and took from their midst their eldest son, John W., and Mrs. Cleek's father, Vincent Corder. Becoming discouraged, and believing it impossible for white people to live in the Golden State, Mrs. Cleek and children returned to Missouri by way of Panama. Two years later, in 1852, Mr. Cleek joined his family and lived with them in the old home until the breaking out of the Civil War and in 1862 the family once more crossed the plains. They settled once more on the Sacramento river at the Montgomery place, but realizing the unsanitary conditions there shortly afterwards moved to the present home. In 1879 on the 2nd of July, the happy union was broken and A. S. C. Cleek was called by death. Mrs. Cleek's long life was one of usefulness. In 1851 she was converted and joined the Baptist Church. She has since lived in earnest, active, Christian life, sympathetic and kind ever willing to share the burdens of others and at all times ready to give to those less fortunate than herself. Her life drew to a close at 1 o'clock a.m. May 6, 1906. Mary Virginia Cleek, known to all as Grandma Cleek, enjoyed the love and esteem of all with whom she associated. She was a truly noble woman, and to those nearest and dearest to her, there existed a bond of love, the severing of which leaves a wound that time cannot heal. The love she bore her fellowman made her life an exceptionally strong one and in the untying of God's hand of these links of love, even though "He doeth all things well," it leaves the pangs of regret and a weight upon our lives that only by yielding to the Divine Revelation, can we who adored her say, "Thy will be done." The funeral services were held at the residence at 11 o'clock, Monday morning, Rev. W.C. Whitaker conducting the services. The interment took place in the I. O. O. F. Cemetery, a large number of friends and acquaintances being in attendance. The pallbearers were A. W., J. S., S. R., S. P., J. L. and V.C. Cleek, Jr., Grandsons of the deceased. ? Transcribed by E. V. C. CLEEK DIES AT SEBASTOPOL

Was Civil War Veteran, Orland Pioneer and Former County Supervisor

    V. C. Cleek, one of the earliest settlers of this vicinity and perhaps one of the most widely known men of Glenn county, has passed to the great beyond. He passed away at his home at 2:45 p. m. last Monday in Sebastopol, Sonoma county, where he moved only a few months ago, hoping that the change of climate would be beneficial to his health. He was afflicted with catarrh of the stomach, yet he appeared to be enjoying good health when he left here last spring, and when the word came a few weeks ago that he was in a very critical condition, few of his friends thought his illness would be fatal.
Vincent Corder Cleek, son of Andrew S. C. and Mary V. Cleek, was born in Marion county, Missouri, October 27, 1844. When five years of age he came to California with his parents in an ox train, arriving in Sacramento August 1, 1850. The family made their way on up the valley and settled on the river in the vicinity of where the town of Hamilton City has since been built. Here the elder Cleek opened a store and hotel. His family having poor health here, were sent back to their old home in Missouri via Panama. The elder Cleek, however, remained and continued in the business he had started and engaged to some extent in farming and stock raising, having taken a partner in the business in the person of M. A. Reager.
In 1852 he joined his family in Missouri and remained there for ten years, when he again brought them to California, settling again in the same place and engaging exclusively in farming. At the outbreak of the Civil War young Vincent enlisted in the southern army. Upon his return to California with his parents he went to work on his father's farm, and when ________________ homesteaded the quarter section east of Orland and made a comfortable home, which he still owned when he died. On November 20, 1871, he was married to Miss Julia Richelieu, who preceded him over the river of death about a year ago. The surviving children of this union are: Andrew W., Jeb S., Mrs. J. C. Hamilton, Vincent C., Jr., Samuel P. and James C. Cleek of Orland, and John L. Cleek of Wheatland. He was eminently successful in his farming operations and added to his holdings until he owned a section of land.
Vincent Corder Cleek took and active interest in the public affairs of this county and was elected Supervisor from this district (then Colusa county) just before county division took place. In 1894 he was elected Supervisor from this district of Glenn county, and succeeded himself in 1898.
The remains arrived here on the afternoon train Wednesday and the funeral services were held from the old home a few miles east of town at 10 o'clock Thursday morning, Rev. J. W. Norris officiating. ? Transcribed by E.

Orland Unit, Monday, 25 February 1935:

MRS. ELIZA MITCHELL DIES AT WILLOWS

Mrs. Eliza Mitchell, widow of James Mitchell, died at her home in Willows Friday, aged 78 years. Mrs. Mitchell had been in ill health for the past fire years, but maintained her courage and activity almost to the end.
Mrs. Mitchell was the daughter of Andrew S. Cleek and Virginia Cleek, pioneers who came from Missouri to California in 1950. Her parents made a trip back to Missouri before her birth, and she was born at the old home in that state. When she was only five years old the family made the trip again across the plains, and little Eliza came with them, one of the early "covered wagon" babies to come to this section of the state. Her parents settled on a portion of the McIntosh ranch, where she lived to young womanhood, and then married James Mitchell, and with him made a home on a ranch north of Stony Creek, in what is now known as the Lake district where they lived till 1908, when they retired from farming and moved to Willows, where the husband passed away some ten years ago.
The couple left no children, but raised from babyhood a grand niece, who is now Mrs. Mabel Morrissey Waste of Chico. Harry Delman (Dillman) also was raised by them as their own child, and remained with them, being at the bedside at Mrs. Mitchell's demise. Mrs. Mitchell is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews: Mrs. J. C. Hamilton, James, Jeff (Jeb) and Vince Cleek of Orland, Andrew Cleek of Chico, Jos. (John L.) Cleek of Santa Rosa, Mrs. Hicks of Bakersfield, Mrs. Perkins of San Francisco and John Hood of Alaska.
Both Mr. and Mrs. Mitchell were life long members of the Baptist church, members of the church at Orland during their residence here, and later affiliating with the Willows church. Funeral services were held yesterday afternoon from the Willows church, the pastor, Rev. Luverude officiating. The remains were brought to Orland for interment in the Odd Fellows cemetery. ?
