His father abandoned his mother after four months of marriage. His grandfather Benjamin Patterson adopted him.

VOCATION: At the age of 16, Charles Patterson was apprenticed out to learn the printer's trade with the firm of Gales and Seaton, Washington, DC, publishers of the "Intelligencer."
