24 Dec 1719: On Christmas Eve Rawleigh Chinn and his friend William Norris, and their respective servants journeyed to the home of Mr. Ball, one of his Majesty's Justices, called him out in his yard, abused and vilified him, and when Mr. Ball commanded peace in the name of his Majesty, they spoke of his Majesty in the most scandalous language. The court records show that both Rawleigh Chinn and William Norris were fined five guineas each on bended knee at the bar of the court, and it was ordered that their respective servants be taken out on the Courthouse Green and each receive forty and nine lashes on their bare backs to be administered by the sheriff. 11 Jul 1722: At a court held for Lancaster County, Wednesday, the 11th July, 1722; On the prayer of Ester Chinn setting forth that her husband Raleigh Chinn doth daily abuse her and refuse her any competency whereby she may subsist and that by sd means thereof she hath lately been abliged away from her home to be delivered of a child which she prays may be by her sd husband maintained. It is ordered that the Sheriff of this county acquaint the sd Rawleigh that it is the courts direction that he take care of and maintain the sd child and that he have ten days notice from the time of his being served with this order to provide to the same, and it is furthur ordered that in case the sd Rawleigh do not then take care of the sd child as before directed, the sheriff take him into custody till he give security for so doing. 1728: Margaret Downman was presented to the Richmond County court. The widow of one gentleman and the sister-in-law of a member of the bench, Downman's long-standing liaison with Rawleigh Chinn, a gentleman of neighboring Lancaster, was a scandal in both counties. She tried to evade the court's censure by failing to answer a charge of bastardy and then hired herself a lawyer to challenge the grand jury's presentment. For almost ten years, the grand jury pursued her with a variety of charges, including absence from church, adultery, and of being a person of ill fame and lewd character.

To son Joseph he gives my manor plantation five hundred acres of land lying in Prince William County. To son Thomas the plantation I now live on five hundred acres of land. To son Chichester all the land I hold in Richmond and King George Counties. Mentions daughter Anne Shearman and grandson Raleigh Shearman, two hundred acres of land in Prince William County. !12 Mar 1742: "He inherited his father's manor plantation of 30 acres, Lancaster County, Virginia, and also 500 acres in Prince William County, Virginia, of a tract of 3,300 acres. They were included in Loudoun County after 1757. In 1763 he sold to Colonel Levin Powell 500 acres of his Loudoun County lands and on part of the land Powell in 1782, laid out the Town of Middleburg, Virginia. The Powells and Chinns fell out in 1811 over their dividing lines. The matter was compromised in court in Leesburg, Virginia, April 7, 1814." "They had children: John, Ann and Elizabeth." !1761-1762: Chinn's Mill Pond named for Joseph Chinn who built the pond and mill in 1761-1762 in partnership with James Ball who owned land adjoining the pond on the Lancaster Co. side. The pond includes at its upper end all of the Morattico Old Mill Pond. The old dam is still partially visible a third of a mile upstream from the present day where highway 3 now crosses Lancaster Creek.

!8 Jan 1763: Joseph and Priscilla Chinn of Lancaster Co sold their share of the inheritance to Leven Powell for 110 pounds. The deed described the land as "situate lying and being in the County of Loudoun on the lower or south side of goose Creek which said land was willed to the said Joseph Chinn by his father Rawleigh Chinn being part of a large tract taken up and patented by the said Rawleigh Chinn including the plantation settled by Edward hughes containing five hundred acres."

I, Charles Chinn, of Fauquier County, being sick and weak, but of perfect mind and memory, do make and ordain this my last will and testament. I give and bequeath unto my son Charles Chinn my silver watch, one feather bed, and furniture, one cow, six new pewter plates, one pewter dish, one case of knives and forks, and fifty pounds current money to be paid him out of my estate, which I give to the said Charles and to his heirs and assigns forever. I give and bequeath unto my sons Raleigh Chinn, John Chinn, Wm. !1770: Edge Hill was described in 1934 as set on a hill overlooking Lancaster Creek and the lowlands beyond, back from the Rappahannock. A large brick mansion, it was the seat of a large estate, a home of the Chinn family. The estate, part of a Chinn grant was inherited by John Chinn, a grandson of Rawleigh and Esther Ball Chinn who, about 1770, built the mansion. His son John Yates Chinn graduated in Medicine at St. George and St. Thomas Hospital, London England. Upon his return to Virginia married Sally (Sarah Fairfax) Carter one of the several daughters of Councilor Robert Carter of Nomini hall. Once there were terraced gardens. It had a facade one hundred fifty feet across. Guidebook of the Northern Neck by R. Ragland Eubank in 1934. It was located far up on Lancaster Creek, near a road that turns left at Fairplay, off the Simonson Road. Nothing is left of the mansion but an outlline of the foundation.

In his will of 1815, he left all his property both real and personal to his widow, during her widowhood or natural life, with a few exceptions. He left about 65 acres of land to "my daughter Elizabeth Wilson", and a Negro woman named Judy to " my daughter Lucy Beveridge", during her lifetime after which Judy and her increase was to be sold and the money equally divided between the children of Elizabeth Wilson. At the death of Elizabeth Chinn, "my son, Samuel Chinn all the property and land I have given her during her life".
