Gunnery was typical of enterprising men of his generation. Somehow he gained a toehold and kept going. Unlike some of his relatives, Gunnery could read and write. In time, he owned a plantation and was a slaveholder. He died in Halifax, VA sometime after he wrote his will in 1796. None of his sons were named Gunnery, but many of his grandchildren would keep the name alive for numerous generations.

By 1850, six Wilburn families continued to reside in Halifax, VA. In time some of their descendants would relocate to Tazwell, Virginia. (Contact Wade Wilburn for details.)

At least four of Gunnery's sons relocated to Smith Co. Tennessee and were living there in 1830, if not sooner. Obadiah Wilburn who married Elizabeth Martin was one. It would appear that another son named John who married Elizabeth Phelps, later settled into Hickman Co. TN and his descendants later relocated to Illinois and after the Civil War, relocated to Missouri.

One Gunnery Wilburn served in the War of 1812 from Tennessee. In time, some Wilburns with roots in Halifax, VA would settle into Vicksburg, Mississippi and from there, the next generation would relocate to Oklahoma.

Betty married Archibald Parker about 1830. Archibald (son of Francis Parker and Mrs. Ella N. "Lucy" (..) Parker) was born between 1781 and 1790 in Halifax Co, Virginia; died after 1830 in of, Smith Co, Tennessee. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
