Was one of first 5 families to settle in present day Hampshire County, West Virginia, USA.

"The Bunker Hill mill could be put back in operation in a few days. Deed records verify that there was a mill, or two mills, here on Mill Creek in the 1730s. Morgan Bryant had a mill on his plantation in 1734 when the land was surveyed for him. This is the Bedington Mill today. The third was north of Scrabble on Jones Mill stream. It, too, was there when the land was surveyed in 1734.

Mills in the Northern Half of Berkeley County
Opequon Creek had five mills north of Martinsburg. The first mill was almost at the mouth of the Opequon Creek. It was the Forman Mill, which is listed on the John Wood Berkeley County 1820 map. The Formans also had a ferry on the Potomac River. James Forman operated the mill until he died in 1834. It was then sold to Charles Starbuck. When the new Dam No. 5 was built across the Potomac near Honeywood in 1835, it raised the Opequon Creek to a height that prevented the Forman Mill from operating. According to John P. Kearfott's 1847 map, D. Morrison had a mill there, but on the opposite side of the Opequon Creek.

We're next going to take in the area between the east side of the Opequon Creek and the Berkeley and Jefferson county line. The first mill would have been very early, before 1734, on the run from Hard Scrabble to the Potomac. The Formans also had a mill there, first owned by James Forman and then Benjamin Forman. A third mill was established at the mouth of Jones Run where it empties into the Potomac River. Rawleigh Morgan, grandson of Richard Morgan, inherited land from his brother-in-law. Will of Van Swearingen Mill in 1792, which was at the mouth of Jones mill stream. He erected a mill. It was Thomas Swearingen II who got Jones Mill.

Grist mills were used to grind wheat into flour. The Morgan Bryan Mill was purchased by Peter Light, who owned the grist mill.

"James Foreman had come to the area by 1750 when he purchased 800 acres from John Jones on 15 August 1750.

On 15 May 1780 James sold this tract of land to his son Benjamin Foreman who established a mill along Jones Mill Stream. The 800-acre tract was in the Scrabble area of Berkeley County. On 27 June 1774 Joseph and Benjamin Foreman made a division of their mouth of the Opequon Creek 384 acres. The Formans of England-
For more than six hundred years, from the earliest records of the family in Lincolnshire, England, to the present day, the spelling of the name Forman has been unchanged. In 1316 land in Lincolnshire was granted to one Ralph Forman; in 1373 Thomas Forman, and 1375 Robertus Forman, a juror, were inhabitants of this county. In the Lincolnshire Rebellion of 1536 Robert Forman gave five marks to the rebels.[Lincolnshire Notes and Queries, vol. 11, p. 249; vol. 18, p. 58; Linc. Rec. Soc. vol. 30, pp. 77, 87, 227]. All through the fifteenth, sixteenth, and seventeenth centuries there were Formans living in England, chiefly in Lincolnshire, according to the records.
The most distinguished member of the family seems to have been Sir William Forman, Knight, Lord Mayor of London, a native of Gainsborough, Lincolnshire. He was the son of William Forman, a yeoman of Gainsborough. His sister, Elizabeth Forman, married Morice Morgan.
Sir William Forman was Knighted on October 18, 1537, and was an Alderman in Parliament form Cripplegate Ward in the City of London from 1529 to 1545. He was High Sheriff of London in 1533 and Lord Mayor from 1538 to 1539. During a Muster of Citizens in 1539 he rode in a procession and carried a coat of black velvet embroidered with a cross; on his head was a black velvet cap with a rich jewel; and about him rode four footmen apparelled in satin hose and fine white silk.
By trade Sir William Forman was a haberdasher. In 1544 he, with others, leased from King Henry VIII the Manor of Tullesworth in Surrey. In the same year, on August 30, he married Blanche Palmer, a widow, of London. He died on January 13, 1547, and was buried in the Church of Saint George, Botolph Lane, in East Cheapside, London. A monument was erected there to his memory.
His great grandson, Robert Forman went to Amersterdam and received the Charter for Flushing, New Amersterdam, which is now Queens, New York. The Forman family flurished and soon spread to New Jersey, Pennsylvannia, Virginia, and Kentucky. They followed the migration patterns to North and South Carolina and on down to Louisiana and Mississippi Territories.
In the Natchez area, they formed the Forman Colony, and brought the first four-wheeled cart to the Mississippi Territory.
The Spanish Census of 1790 shows George "Jorge" Forman and family next to William "Guillermo" Irwin. They were settled on the Sara Bayou and Coles Creek area.

Item: Victor Richard bought his land from Edward Foreman in 1794. Thomas Hoffpauir age 76 testified in the land claim in 1812. Hoffpauir said the land had been occupied by Foreman "more than 30 years ago, for several years;" that after the sale to Richard, "Primo occupied same on Richard's account for 2 or 3 years., after which Foreman was employed to tend Richard's cattle, where he resided and cultivated for 5 successive years."

Died on Ship "Pretty Peggy 1759 at the age of 42. - Another entry, his father: John Foreman b. 1616 Margate Kent, England; d. January 1760(84 yrs) buried 25 January 1760). Perhaps this is the same John Foreman who brought prisoners, bonded people, etc from Ipswich England to the Colonies-as noted in many entries of the Ship Henry & Francis-Including Scots who had been convicted mainly because of their religious beliefs.)
In 1685 there is a posting of the Ship Henry and Francis of NewCastle bringing in Passengers to Perth Amboy, NJ mid December 1685-Included on the list is a John Foreman who was banished.

The notice is unaccompanied by any evidence or document title, except the deed of sale from said Indian, passed before Louis C.DeBlanc, acting as commandant of Attakapas, stipulating that the land shall extend from one small bayou to another, where the said Indian should set pickets: it being part of the land which the seller inherited from his father, for which he was to receive from the claimant eight cows with their calves, and a beef, to be paid as soon as the boundaries should be fixed. For reasons given in reported No. 1, of Opelousas claims, this is reported as a claim which, in the opinion of the Commissioners, ought not to be confirmed.

Isma Forman claims a donation right of a tract in aforesaid county on both sides of a branch of Morgan's Fork of the Homochitto, beginning at Alexander Montgomery's corner, being the only claim of land the said Isma Forman holds or has held within the territory which was improved in 1797 and cultivated ever since, Forman being of age at the time of settling and head of a family of ten. 1800, Dec. 6
Isma Forman, section 5, signed the memorial to the United States House and Senate in an attempt to have the Mississippi Territory restored to it's former status "first grade of government". A previous petition signed by only a handfull of settlers advanced MS to the "second stage of government" which involves a legislature. The election was a mess. This second memorial signed by most of the residents was read in both houses of Congress and ignored.

Then there were the brothers, George and Ismy Forman, from the Western Florida area which at the time of the writing of the book, was in the eastern parishes of Louisiana. They became the leaders of the newly formed congregation, the Society headed by Thomas Owens Sr., in the early years of Spring Hill, "an eligible lot near a good spring", where the meeting house was built. Thomas Owens, Edward Forman, John J. Robertson and " his ever-faithful and goldly colored servant Caesar", Theophilus Marble, George and Ismy Forman built the church using axes to cut the timbers, hew the logs, built pulpits and other appendages. This church became the headquarters of the Natchez territory.

George Forman was one of the early settlers of the Mississippi Territory. The Spanish Census for The District of Natchez in the year of 1792 lists "Jorge Forman" with 350 acres, 3 W/M's under the age of 10, 1 W/M 16-26, 1 W/F under 10, 1 F 16-26, with 36 steers, 25 milk cows and 9 pigs. --Spanish Census 1792 Villa de Gayoso
William Erwin is listed adjacent to George, he apparently is George's father-in-law, George's wife is Sarah Irwin/Erwin. This land is located on the waters of Cole's Creek and on St. Catherine's Creek. This appears to be the same area sd by Ezekiel Forman of Philadelphia, Pa. brother of General David Forman, of Monmouth County New Jersey, and Revolutionary War Hero.
Cole's Creek was named for the Cole family, and Susan Cole marries William Forman, George's son in Opelousas, La. in 1812.

I will also note here that Ezekiel Forman's land is on the Bayou Sara and he shares ownership of another 1000 acres with Richard Butler. This is important because it establishes a contact between the Butler's and the Forman's of George's l

The above information is from documents found in "First Settlers of The Mississippi Territory"--Grants taken from the American State Papers--Class VIII Public Lands, Volume I, 1789-1809. Distributed by Ericson Books 1614 Redbud Street, Naches, Texas 75961.

Documents at the Opelousas Court House, showed that George Forman was an official of the Parish, as he was responsible for investigating persons with unbranded cattle. It also appears that George was very careful of his "good name" and reon as he once filed suit against William Hays for defamation and slander. Here is the suit filed by George Forman:

" To the Honorable Judge of the parish of St. Landry, in the Territory of Orleans. The petition of George Forman Humbly showeth that on the twenty third day of Sept. 1807, William Hays of this parish in the presence of John Adam did malicy injure your petitioner and endeavor to deprive your petitioner of that good reputation he has always supported__ by saying that your petitioner has kild a Spanyard at the Natchez and that your petitioner had stolen hogs__to the damage of your petitioner___Five thousand dollars--Your petitioner knowing himself Clear of these Charges and having always supported the reputation of an honest citizen--and being charged with a family of children and not wishing to say under such an appolation--as it might in future be cast up to his offsprings--your petitioner prays your Honour to have the said William Hays to appear before your Honour on the Second Monday in Oct. next, to prove the charges exhibited against your petitioner, and your petitioner will win pray____"

George Forman is also credited with helping build the first Church in Natchez, Mississippi Territory with Ismy Forman, his brother. This was in 1803, according to the Reverend Moses Floyd. Edward Forman, Theophilus Marble, and John J. Robn, and Thomas Owens also helped build the church.

Source: The Hoffpauirs of Louisiana... Rosemary Wright Hoffpauir. This has been used by the Hoffpauirs to gain entry into the DAR-apparently these three are listed among Galvez's troops possibly who fought with the Spanish against the British in Mobile and Pensacola during the American Revolution.

George is buried in Old Bethel Church Cemetery-Sec. 22-T8N-R1W On Cannonburg Road at intersection of Hill Road-Across from the Bethlehem Church-the front portion of the cemetery is Bethlehem's behind it is Old Bethel Cemetery.

It appears that George and Sarah Forman came to Mississippi from what is now known as Edgefield County, South Carolina. I have found the George Foreman applied for petition for Warrants of survey and certitying plats on Tuesday, 6 December. (page 84) "Citizens and Immigrants-South Carolina, 1768", on the Savannah River, 50 acres. George Foreman appears to be close to Jacob and Isaac Foreman, of the Orangeburgh District. When Jacob Foreman dies in 1790, his minor children (Ann, David, Isaac and Zelpha) are given to Isaac Foreman for guardianship. It is after the death of Jacob Forman that George and Sarah go to Natchez, Mississippi.

I also learned that George Foreman served in the South Carolina Militia under Capts. Joseph Johnson and Frederick Wommack, in 1781. He was a horseman. George Foreman, Isaac Foreman, Jacob Foreman, Thomas Foreman, William Foreman, and Arthoreman, all served together in the S. C. Militia.

"In the name of God, Amen. I George Forman, being very sick, but sound of mind, do make this my last will and testament and as it is appointed for all men to die and after death the judgement and in hopes of a glorious immortality.
First of all, I recommend my soul to God who gave it and my body to be buried in a descent Christian burial at the descretion of my executors, to be hereafter named, and as for my worldly goods as it has pleased God to bless me with. After all my debts are paid and all lawful contracts made by me are to be complied with by my executors.
I do dispose of my worldly goods in the following manner, viz., I do give and bequeath unto my beloved wife, Sarah, the plantation whereon I now reside during her natural life of as long as she lives, a negro man named Stephen, and a negro woman named Ginny, and also their family of children, all to be returned to my heirs at her death, a negro woman named Aggy to be subject to her mistress during her mistress' lifetime or as long as she remains in widowhood and then to be made a free as the laws of the country will admit: ding mare and all the increase she may have, one yoke of oxen, fifteen head of other cattle, she may have her own---, one plough, two hoes, two axes, and the rest of my property to be divided among the rest of my heirs, viz. Another document in the file reads: "June 10th 1826. Rec'd. of the Executors of the Estate of Geo. Forman, dec'd. Three hundred twenty four dollars twenty three 1/4 Cents, it being the amt. due Levina J. Forman from the Estate together with Thirty Six Dollars due Sd. Infant Lavina from T. Estate for Eighteen months schooling at Two Dollars per month making a total of Three hundred and Sixty Dollars twenty three 1/4 cents in full Sarah X Forman, John M. Folks Guardians *Levina J. Forman appears to be the "Sevina Johnston" mentioned in the transcription of the will since what she inherited matches.
There is a receipt dated March 27, 1826 showing that Sarah inherited the same slaves mentioned in the will.

The Sevina Johnston mentioned in the will of George, is actually Lavina Johnston/Johnson/Jeansonne, the daughter of George's sister, Sarah Forman, who married Isaac Jeansonne. George and Sarah did have a minor child Lavina J. Forman, who was a minor at the time of George's death. Folkes was appointed guardian.

George married Sarah Jane (Irwin) Erwin about 1785. Sarah was born on 18 Jan 1768 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania; died on 28 Dec 1848 in Jefferson Co, Mississippi; was buried in Folkes Cem, Jefferson Co, MIssissippi. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

"I do not believe either Ephriam or Elizabeth was born in Opelousas. The reported birth places of their children are VA or NC, NC, and SC. It appears that Ephriam did not arrive in MS Territory until the last couple of years of the 18th century or the first couple of the 19th.

"From what little data I have on the early Foremans, it appears that they did not move to LA until the early 1780s. Before then, some of them had been in the Natchez area for an unknown time. I don't know if Ephriam ever moved to LA. Some of the Foremans stayed in MS; some who came to LA went back to MS."

The Cole and Foreman families both lived for a time in the Natchez District of Mississippi before moving to Louisiana. Members of both families were early settlers in the area which is now know as Acadia Parish. James Cole, who was Susan's father and James Foreman are both shown to be owners of riverbank strips of land fronting Bayou Plaquemine Brulee on an Acadia Par. map that represents land ownership prior to 1803. James Foreman was the original owner of his tract, claiming ownership by settlement and occupancy. (Fontenot: Acadia Parish La Vol 1 P 21)
Susan and James were married 5 Feb 1805. the Marriage was registered in the Opelousas Catholic Church. (Hebert: Southwest La Records, vol 1 p 135).
Apparently James did not retain ownership of his land on Bayou Plaquemine Brulee but moved his family to another area. Several bits of information substantiate this. George King, probate judge from Opelousas at the time of James' death i3 stated in the succession that he had traveled 70 miles to the last residence of the deceased. It is not possible to travel that distance from Opelousas and still be on Bayou Plaquemine Brulee. Further, Hampton Holland, orally relating family history stated that his grandmother, Zilia Ann Foreman (dau. of James and Susan) was from the Lacassine, LA area. Lacassine is about 70 miles "as the crow flys" from Opelousas. (St. Landry Parish Court House. Succ # 619)
Susan remarried in 1835 to Nelson Higginbotham, widower of Judith Ware. Mr Higginbotham received his authority to celebrate marriages in 1832 and thereby was a Justice of the Peace.
Susan died in 1881 at age 92.

Item: Accross on the Bayou's north bend was the property of James Foreman, the original landowner, claimed by settlement and occupancy. The foreman land was adjacent to Antoine Blanc's large holding on upper Plaquemine Brulee. The son of Edward Foreman, native of Virginia, and Marie Burnett (Bonnet, Barnett) he was married in 1805 to Susan Cole, daughter of James, originally of Natchez and Maime Cotter. Research Notes:
Trees on Rootsweb show the James married To MCCleland as the son of James and Susan Cole. Dates are close to not working. Forman/McCleland m was 1819 Forman/Cole m 1806. If James Jr b after marriage, then 1806 makes him only 13 to marry in 1819. Est his b at 1800 is 4 yrs before marriage.
Also, mother Susanne Cole - b 1789. He could not be her son and born 1800 or any time earlier. That puts her at 11. If she were 15, that puts him b at 1804, meaning he married at 15 - which is the only possible age to meet both dates, but not likely. Doesn't quite add up.

Looking at 1820 census and age groups, James Sr. and James Jr. are both in the same age range, 26-44. Each has to be at the respective far end of the range, meaning James Jr. was born abt 1796, so his marriage to Elizabeth in 1819 would be 23 years. However if Susanne Cole born 1789 is his mother, that puts her age at his birth at 7. James Sr.'s age 18. James Sr. must have had a 1st wife.

This Benjamin married second to Mary Vandiver.

A 1868 Hampshire County, VA court document, which is part of the Estate Settlement of Catherine McCormick, has some of the estate given to children of "Nancy" Forman. The named children are those of Benjamin and Mary Forman of Clark County Ohio. Court papers from Clark County Ohio, have her name only as Mary and or Polly, never Nancy. Catherine Vandiver Greenwell McCormick, who's estate is given to "Nancy" Forman, had a sister named Mary who married a Benjamin Forman. This is proven by the 1805 Hampshire Co., VA settlement of their father, William Vandiver's estate and by a 1839 Hampshire Co court case between all of William Vandiver's children. It again names Mary Forman.
The 1868 settlement erroniously named her Nancy. The setttlement was delayed by the Civil War and was handed off to another attorney after the original attorney, Thomas Carsksdon, had died. This mistake has missled many researchers into beliveing that Mary Vandiver's husband was the Benjamin Forman, son of James, the eldest son of Benjamin and Elizabeth Hamilton Forman. However, that Benjamin Forman died before 1826, as proven by the 1826 Berkeley County Court lawsuit brought by Mary Forman stated to be a widow.

"The Bunker Hill mill could be put back in operation in a few days. Deed records verify that there was a mill, or two mills, here on Mill Creek in the 1730s. Morgan Bryant had a mill on his plantation in 1734 when the land was surveyed for him. This is the Bedington Mill today. The third was north of Scrabble on Jones Mill stream. It, too, was there when the land was surveyed in 1734.

Mills in the Northern Half of Berkeley County
Opequon Creek had five mills north of Martinsburg. The first mill was almost at the mouth of the Opequon Creek. It was the Forman Mill, which is listed on the John Wood Berkeley County 1820 map. The Formans also had a ferry on the Potomac River. James Forman operated the mill until he died in 1834. It was then sold to Charles Starbuck. When the new Dam No. 5 was built across the Potomac near Honeywood in 1835, it raised the Opequon Creek to a height that prevented the Forman Mill from operating. According to John P. Kearfott's 1847 map, D. Morrison had a mill there, but on the opposite side of the Opequon Creek.

We're next going to take in the area between the east side of the Opequon Creek and the Berkeley and Jefferson county line. The first mill would have been very early, before 1734, on the run from Hard Scrabble to the Potomac. The Formans also had a mill there, first owned by James Forman and then Benjamin Forman. A third mill was established at the mouth of Jones Run where it empties into the Potomac River. Rawleigh Morgan, grandson of Richard Morgan, inherited land from his brother-in-law. Will of Van Swearingen Mill in 1792, which was at the mouth of Jones mill stream. He erected a mill. It was Thomas Swearingen II who got Jones Mill.

Grist mills were used to grind wheat into flour. The Morgan Bryan Mill was purchased by Peter Light, who owned the grist mill.

note by ss: At the time of this marriage in 1798 there were three children already born, Julia age 9; Nathan Ephraim age 5, and Raquel age 1.
Julia's and Raquel's birth records in SW Louisiana records say they were children of Edward & Rebecca Rascoe; however, they would have been grandparents instead of parents. Edward Jr. was already 40 by the time Julia was born and 42 when Raquel was born; so it's highly unlikely they were his sisters. Dates of continuity of baptisms conclude they were daughters of Edward Jr. & Anna Perry.

Some believe they were children of a previous marriage; however it seems that they were indeed Anna's children. On their marriage day 8 May 1798, the baby Raquel, 1 y.o., was also baptized.
They had another child Isaac Pierre in 1799. Then on Nov 21, 1801, Nancy Anna herself, the baby Pierre, abt 2, and the two older Julia and Nathan Ephraim were baptized at ages 12 and 8 respectively were baptized together.
Their marriage record stated Edward Forman was single - indicating this was his first marriage.

note by ss: At the time of this marriage (Edward & Nancy Anna Perry) in 1798 there were three children already born, Julia age 9; Nathan Ephraim age 5, and Raquel age 1.
Julia's and Raquel's birth records in SW Louisiana records say they were children of Edward & Rebecca Rascoe; however, they would have been grandparents instead of parents. Edward Jr. was already 40 by the time Julia was born and 42 when Raquel was born; so it's highly unlikely they were his sisters. Dates of continuity of baptisms conclude they were daughters of Edward Jr. & Anna Perry.

Some believe they were children of a previous marriage; however it seems that they were indeed Anna's children. On their marriage day 8 May 1798, the baby Raquel, 1 y.o., was also baptized.
They had another child Isaac Pierre in 1799. Then on Nov 21, 1801, Nancy Anna herself, the baby Pierre, abt 2, and the two older Julia and Nathan Ephraim were baptized at ages 12 and 8 respectively were baptized together.
Their marriage record stated Edward Forman was single - indicating this was his first marriage.

SPRING HILL CHURCH, JEFFERSON COUNTY, MS 1803:
Then there were the brothers, George and Ismy Forman, from the Western Florida are, which at the time of the writing of the book, was in the eastern parishes of Louisiana. They became the leaders of the newly formed congregation, the Society headed by Thomas Owens, Sr., in the early years of Spring Hill, "an eligible lot near a good spring", where the meeting house was built. Thomas Owens,EDWARD FORMAN (15-16 years old), John J. Robertson and his "ever-faithful and goldly colored servant Caesar, Theophilus Marble, GEORGE AND ISMY FORMAN built the church using axes to cut the timbers, hew the logs, built pulpits and other appendages. This church became the headquarters of the Natchez territory.
The church at Spring Hill in Jefferson County, under the labors of John C. Johnson was being developed at this time with the assistance of the families of Baldrige, FORMAN, and Marble. John J. Robertson and Thomas Owens, Jr. had joined th echurch in 1808, and both were called on by their elder brethren to "do their duty" and use their skills for the Church.

1813 APPOINTMENTS (The British fleet was on the Gulf, and the Creek War was raging) The Nov. 1, 1813 Conference was held in Newt Vick's home with the families of Baldridges, Marbles and FORMANS helping with the preachers' horses and supplies. It was attended by Samuel Sellers, John Phipps, Miles Harper, William Winans, Lewis Hobbs, Thomas Griffin and John S. Ford(John Salmon "Rip" Ford?) A letter from the Bishops who could not attend appointed Samuel Sellers president. Rules for the conference were adopted.

1822-1835 - Minutes of the County Court - Office of the Chancery Clerk - Appointment of Overseers of Roads Jefferson Co. Courthouse: "Fayette District-Malcold Gilchrist, overseer, from the county line to crops roads with his own hands, Dugal Tory, George Tory, Jr., Gillford Tory, Mrs. S. Tory, Gabriel Osteen, EDWARD FORMAN, Capt John Montgomery and George Tory, Sr. assigned to said road.

In 1835 Edward James Forman had acquired a home near the Homochitto River in Amite county. During the same year, he gathered alittle band of Christians about him and organized a church and called it "Mt. Vernon." Edward was a preacher and pastored the church until 1853, when his son, Ephriam Forman came on the scene and became pastor. The church was sponsored by Ephriam Forman, Newton Huff, David Robertson and Fleming Poole. Ephriam Forman, Newton Huff, and Fleming Poole were all preachers and served this church in a ministorial way until about 1880. After the Civil War there were some great revivals held there.

In 1890, the members decided to move the church nearer the center of the community. This was done and deeded to the Woodville District in 1891. This building was located on the site of the Homochitto school, but still retained the name of Mt. Vernon. The Anders, Browns, Pooles, Scales, Robertson, Butlers, and many others have sponsored this church all through the years.

A few years ago, the old church was torn away and a modern new church replaced it. The Rev. Edward James Forman was buried at the Old Mt. Vernon Cemetery. Most people think that he was moved to the New hope Methodist Church, but only his marker was moved:

William Forman was a veteran of the War of 1812. He was in Thompson's Regiment of La. 16th Militia. He lived in Opelousas and married Susan Cole on December 15, 1812. In 1850 and 1860 La. Census, William Forman and family are living in Calcaieu Parish La. We do not have much information about William or his wife Susan.
According to the 1860 La. Census, the Forman's, William and Susan Forman and Ebenezer and Apolonia Forman and family were living in Calcasieu Parish in area known as Nibletts Bluff. The census lists the Post Office as Ballous Ferry.
It should probably be Ballew's Ferry since the ferry was first run by a fellow named Ballew. Nobody on the 1860 census lived in "Ballew's Ferry"; it was a post office address for a number of folks who lived in the area of Starks and Vinton in southeastern Calcasieu Parish (these towns didn't exist in 1860).
Properly speaking, Ballew's Ferry was in Texas. That is, it's western terminus was on the west bank of the Sabine River in Texas, a few miles North of Orange, known as Madison in 1858, it's eastern terminus was in the vicinity of Niblettsf on the east bank of the Sabine in La.
According to a fellow who used the ferry in the 1830's, Ballew had set up operations in an old building on the west or Texas side of the river. This building had formerly been a temporary slave lodging for Jean Lafitte when he was smugglinves from his main camp on Galveston Island (then part of Mexico) up the Sabine to points farther North where they were sold to slave traders who moved the human contraband on to points deeper in La. and in other southern states. The exact site of both terminals of the ferry is no longer known, but from the writer's description, one can get an approximate idea and it was not a direct crossing from one bank of the river to the opposite bank. The ferry went down river, around the head of an island, then up the Old River, a trip of several miles total.
The 1860 census says Ballous Ferry, La., so the post office must have been on the La. side. This area is now known as the Nibletts Bluff community, and it may have been known by that name then and even before 1860, for a fellow named Nibls listed on one of the early La. censuses, apparently living in that area. It is more likely that the Formans were living in the area of the Big Woods/Edgerly/Vinton area a short distance to the east.
At this same time, 1858-1860, David D. Forman (known as D.D. Forman) and his wife Nancy Simmons, were living in Madison, Texas (now known as Orange)
where the Rev. D.D. Forman was one of the founders of the First Baptist Church.

The 1830 census in Louisiana shows Jacob Higginbottom and Francois Hoffpauir as adjacent entries, which implies they were neighbors. Francois Hoffpauir died the next year (March 5, 1831) and the next January, Marie married Jacob Higginbottom. From the 1830 census: Francois Hoffpauir's family; 1 male age 40-50 (Francois), 1 female age 30-40 (Marie), 1 male age 20-30, 1 male age 15-20.

His wife Marie Johnson b 1796 (confirmed as bt at 7 y-o in 1803. making her 17 to have first child - marrying at age 16. I can't see him younger than that.

It's reasonable that a 12 y-o would not be bt with younger siblings. They were "grown up" quite young and he any number of reasons why not with the others. But granted, I need to study the 1810 census. If b 1785, in 1810 would be 25 and gone.

Lucy Hayes married James D Reeves, parents of Isaac Reeves, who had Joseph Levingston Reeves, whose son Seth was my grandfather.

Died:
Bosman was shot down by jayhawkers or renegade troops while defending his home during the Civil War.

"Raids of farmhouses were occurring in broad daylight and people were shot if they tried to defend their property. Bosman Hayes and Napoleon Franchbois were murdered and Charles Derosier, Sylvain Sonnier and Joseph B. Young had their homes burned."

One of the largest landowners in the neighborhood was Bosman Hayes Jr., who was killed by outlaws in 1864. According to family tradition, Bosman Hayes Jr. owned a white mare which he would let nobody else ride. One night he heard a disturbance at the stable where the mare was kept. He got his shotgun and went to investigate. The night was clear and moonlit after a rainy day. Clothes had been left on a clothesline to dry. He saw two men leading his mare away. Hayes shot one of the men. The other was hidden by a bed sheet on a line. He shot Hayes and killed him on his own back porch.
