A sea captain by trade, Ezra made his first trip on a ship when he was 7 years old. He traveled with his father on a charcoal schooner from Chambers Co to Galveston. At the age of 12, Ezra went to work as a cook on a coastwise schooner in which his brother was the captain. In 1914 he was living in Galveston. He was later in the tugboat business in Port Arthur and by 1920 was working on the Houston Ship Channel. He made history in 1922 when he brought the first ship up the cannel without a tug and later brought the first one up at night.
