Nine years later he was created a baron by Henry VI. He was treasurer of the royal household from 1467 to 1474, and went to France with Edward VI in 1475. After Edward's death, however, he supported Richard III, who created him Duke of Norfolk in 1483. The dukedom had been declared vacant since the death of his grandfather, Thomas Mowbray, 4th Lord Mowbray, Earl of Nottingham, and Duke of Norfolk in 1399. With the dukedom Sir John also received the title Earl Marshal of England, another honor held by his maternal grandfather.
