CORALVILLE - Kenneth M. "Coach"Dains Sr., 66, of Coralville, died Sunday, May 9, 2004, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City.

He was born Dec. 27, 1937, in Moline, Ill., the son of Ray and Minnie Neal Dains.

He married Sally Krueger in 1959 in Keokuk. She preceded him in death in 1988.

He graduated from Keokuk High School in 1956. He received his bachelor's and master's degrees in physical education from the University of Iowa.

He taught physical education in the Iowa City Community School District for nearly 30 years and during that time coached wrestling, football and soccer at Iowa City West High School and Northwest Junior High in Coralville.

After retirement, he worked at the Coralville Hy-Vee Food Store. An avid St. Louis Cardinal and Iowa Hawkeye fan, he also enjoyed bowling, golfing and spending time with family and friends.

Survivors include: four sons, Max Dains and his wife, Carolyn, of North Liberty, Jeff Dains and his wife, Angie, of Tiffin, Jerry Dains and his wife, Jodie, and Rob Dains, all of Iowa City; a daughter, Carrie Brown and her husband, Mike, of Iowa City; grandchildren, Heidi, Sarah, Max, Parker, Griffin, Callie, Mason and Molly; three brothers, Jerry Dains and his wife, Shirley, of Ontario, Calif., Ray Dains of Keokuk, and Dave Dains of Bullhead City, Ariz.: a sister, Dorothy Brown of Boise, Idaho; sisters and brothers in law, Diane Hughes of East Lansing, Mich., Donna Dains of Fort Madison, Ross Wear of Carthage, Ill., Diane Hughes of East Lansing, Mich., John Acer and his wife, Martha, of Phoenix, Ariz., Henry Krueger and his wife, Francis, of Keokuk and Bob Krueger and his wife, Marion, also of Keokuk; and many nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by his parents, a brother Marv, and a sister Donna.

The family will greet friends from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City. A celebration of his life will be held at 6:30 p.m. at Lensing's, with Pastor Karl Devine-Koch officiating.

A private burial will be at Charleston Cemetery in Charleston.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Kenneth Dains Memorial Fund.
