Notes from Brenda Thomas, RootsWeb, WorldConnect:
Martin was seventeen when the Revolution started. An account by his grandson Loton Shofner states " Martin Shofner was actively engaged as a soldier in the War of the Revolution serving in the North Carolina Line. I have often listened to my grandfather as he told me stories of those troblesome times. Martin was a man of wonderful physical strength and great activity even down to old age. One story illustrates his great strength. He was a member of a regiment of calvalry. On one occasion a regiment of infantry, being encamped near them, sent a challenge to bring out their best man for a trial of strength and skill at wrestling. Grandfather was selected to meet their champion and after the match, came off victor."

    Post by Larry Shoffner:
Chris: There isn't a lot of information on Peter and his wife, Delilah, but here's what my research shows:
Peter was born on 20 Nov 1770 in what is now Alamance County, NC. He was the son of Michael Shofner and Margaretha Fogleman. He married Delilah Henderson, probably in 1794, with whom he had at least six children. The possible 7th child is Hezekiah, supposedly born in Bedford County, Tennessee, perhaps in 1822. Hezekiah reportedly married Emily Pitt in 1847 in Rutherford County, Tennessee, had nine children and by 1860 had moved to Dyer County, Tennessee. He is believed to have died sometime after 1880. As for Peter, he had moved to Tennessee in 1808 only to return to NC in 1812 to manage lands he had inherited from his father. Later he sold these lands to his brother, Frederick, and was back in Tennessee by 1820. His other children's names are as follows:
    1. Caty Lattimore; b. 1795; d. 1822
    2. William; b. 1797; d. 1879
    3. Plummer L.; b. 20 Mar 1811; d. 8 May 1888
    4. Gabriel; b. 1814; d. 1880
    5. Elvira; b. 17 Jun 1817; d. 25 Sep 1886; married Thomas Gore
    6. Elisabeth; b. 1819.
    Hope this helps some.

  4. 15.  Jacob Anthony, Jr Descendancy chart to this point (6.Mary3, 2.Ann2, 1.Georg/Jerg^1) was born about 1775 in North Carolina; died before 1840 in Tennessee.

    Notes:

Was called "my eldest son" in Jacob's will.

    Information from another researcher:
He was evidently the Jacob Anthony enumerated just over the line in Guilford County in the 1800 census, he and his wife both 16-26 and a young son under 10. He apparently went to Tennessee quite early, as a Jacob Anthony and a Nicholas Anthony appeared on the 1812 tax list of Bedford County, Tennessee. The 1820 Bedford census is incomplete, but he is probably the same Jacob Anthony who appeared in the Franklin County, Tennessee (adjacent to Bedford) census of 1830 aged 50?60. He was not located in 1840, and I presume he died in the 1830s. His widow was evidently Barbara Low. A "Mrs.. Barbara Antony" was in the 1840 Franklin County census with a household matching that of the1830 census. On 25 February 1845 the heirs of Samuel Low, one of whom was Barbary Anthony, sold land on Thompson's Creek in Bedford County to John Anthony.[17] Jacob and Barbara appear to have had four daughters in the 1830 census, but only one son. The son was evidently the John Anthony to whom the land was sold.

  5. 16.  Margaret "Peggy" Anthony Descendancy chart to this point (6.Mary3, 2.Ann2, 1.Georg/Jerg^1) was born on 18 Mar 1783 in Orange Co, North Carolina; died in Aug 1853 in Alamance Co, North Carolina; was buried in St Paul's Lutheran Ch Cem, Alamance Co, North Carolina.

Born about 1795 according to the 1850, 1860, and 1870 censuses of Bedford County when he was listed with a wife named Sally (born c1797 in NC). According to the Shofner book, which provided no evidence, this wife was Sarah Mitchell (1797?1884), buried with him in the Shofner Chapel, whom Adam married about 1819.[19] However, a marriage bond in Orange County, North Carolina shows the marriage of Adam Anthony to Sally Sharp on 24 April 1819.[20] Adam appears to have stayed in North Carolina through the 1820 Orange County census, and then moved to Tennessee. He first appears in Bedford County in the 1830 census. Adam died in Bedford County, Tennessee in 1878. There are several records of the settlement of his estate that identify his children.[21] Both he and Sarah are buried in the Shofner Lutheran Chapel graveyard there.

    • Ethnicity: German

    • Will: 1859, Bedford Co, Tennessee

    Notes:

By the late 1850s, in his late 70s, he was suffering from some form of dementia. In September 1858 a jury was appointed "to examine the lunacy of Nicholas Anthony".[7] In October the jury reported he "was a lunatic and unable to take care of his business," and the court appointed his son Laton J. Anthony as his guardian.[8] Nicholas, who would have been about 78 at this time, died within a year, as his will was proved at the October court 1859, with the widow Sally Anthony and Laton J. Anthony appointed as his administrators.[9] The will itself no longer exists, but later court records make it clear that he left one piece of property to his children and his home place property to Sally during her lifetime with reversion to his children at her death.

The widow, Sarah, appears in the 1860 and 1870 censuses in the household of her son Laton J. Anthony. She evidently died sometime in 1873. A statement filed by George T. Anthony on 1 October 1872 states that his father Nicholas Anthony died in 1858 and his widow still resided on the property where he died.[10] An offer to auction the home place land date 4 February 1873 also mentions the land ?on which his widow resides.?[11] But a document dated 29 September 1873 speaks of the ?estate of our grandmother Sallie Anthony?, implying she was dead.[12] The settlement of her estate by her son Laton J. Anthony occurred after Nicholas Anthony?s death.[13] I failed to note the date.

At his death, Nicholas owned two pieces of property: 114 acres on Thompson's Creek in the 24th Civil District of Bedford County, and the home place of 198 acres in the 25th Civil District in Roseville. The 1860 and 1870 censuses show Sarah Anthony living in the 25th Civil District, and his children later stated that Nicholas (and later Sarah) lived on that property in Roseville. Nicholas Anthony?s lost will must have left the 114 acre tract in equal shares to his children, for they engaged in a protracted court case over the distribution of that land in the 24th District. Six of the children wanted to sell the property and divide the proceeds, while the rest preferred to partition the land. The records of this case clearly show the children (or their heirs) were splitting the property 13 ways because, before the case was settled, several shares and parts of shares were sold, in each case the shares being 1/13. For example, Henry Anthony sold his 1/13 share to George Thomas Anthony prior to settlement.[14] The case was in court before 2 November 1869 because on that date the court acted on the recommendation of a commission it had appointed to consider a partition of the property. The commission laid out a 2/13 partition for George T. Anthony (19 1/2 acres), who owned his own share and Henry Anthony?s share, and recommended the remaining 94 1/2 acres be sold.[15] The land was then sold to William Shofner for $3,780 and the proceeds divided 11 ways -- $341.39 apiece after expenses. George T. Anthony then immediately sold his 19 1/2 acres to the same William Shofner, completing the transfer of all 114 acres.[16] The case was settled on 1 September 1873 when the court clerk recorded that he was holding the money for each of the heirs.[17]

After Sally Anthony?s death (probably in 1875), the division of the 198 acre home place in the 25th District prompted a similar protracted court case, with the petition filed 4 November 1875. It stated that the land contained ?the home in which Sally Anthony had resided at her death and for years before.? Again, some legatees wanted to partition the land and others wanted to sell it and divide the proceeds. This time around, the children traded their shares beginning in 1870, with some shares changing hands more than once. By the time the petition was filed, Layton J. Anthony had acquired the interests of Frederick, Roddy, Mary, Jacob, Elizabeth, and Young Anthony, giving him a 7/13 share, and argued for a partition.[18] He eventually succeeded and ended up owning the family home which he apparently had never left. Note that there were a smaller number of litigants in the 1875 case, with only three of the Anthony children participating.

From Bob's Filing Cabient II (Bob Baird) (http://www.genfiles.com/anthony/anthonyjacob.htm):

Powell Anthony (c1799 ? aft1840) He is mentioned as a son of Jacob Anthony, his name given as "Paul Anthony", in the Shoffner book as "b cir. 1799, lived in Nordaway (sic) County, Missouri.?[22] I found no census record for a Paul Anthony anywhere in Missouri for 1830/40/50. However, he is listed as "Powell Anthony" in the 1830 and 1840 censuses of Orange County, with his age given as 30-40 in 1830 and 40-50 in 1840. That makes him too old to have been the male 16-18 in his father's 1820 household, though I could not find Powell Anthony in a separate household in 1820. As Paul Anthony, he was bondsman for a marriage in Orange County in 1831.[23] As "Powel Anthony", he was executor of the will of Letty Neece dated 12 December 1832.[24] I did not find him after 1840. As an intriguing coincidence, I note that a Powell Kimbrough, a neighbor of Jacob Anthony and brother-in-law of Frederick Moser, died in 1795.[25] Could this son have been named for him?
