    Joseph "Joel" Herndon lived until 26 October 1906. It took a lot of searching for me to figure this out! He was committed to Western State Hospital (insane asylum) in 1874 by legal proceedings in Fauquier County, VA. (I have copies of these records.) There he lived for the next 32 years; and he is buried in the cemetery there to this day. Also, we have good reason to believe that his full name was actually Joseph Thaddeus Herndon and that "Joel" was merely a nickname.

    "Nancy" was Joseph "Joel's" second wife, and they were not married until the 1864-1865 timeframe. Joseph "Joel" Herndon married a distant cousin, Elizabeth C. Clemons, in December of 1853, and that marriage lasted until her untimely death at age 20 in October 1856.
