They were living in Rapides Parish in 1810 with 4 children. Bradley served in the War of 1812 in LA with Capt. Thomas Patterson.

In 1830 they were in Cow Bayou settlement, later Jefferson County Texas. This settlement had about 20 families scattered from the Sabine River to the Neches River in Texas. Today this Orange County Texas.

Two of their sons, Jacob Harmon Garner and David Hess Garner settled in Cow Bayou in 1824. In 1828 Sarah Rachel Harmon and Bradley Garner joined the family in Orange County, Texas. Rachel died in Orange County, Texas. Bradley died abt 1848 in Jefferson County, Texas.

Bradley married Rachel Harmon on 27 Dec 1800 in Opelousas, St. Landry Parish, Louisiana. Rachel (daughter of Jacob Harmon, (immigrant) and Hannah (Anna) Guiche) was born about 1780; died after 1819. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Military service: Between 10-5-1835 and 12-4-1835, Texas Revolution, Battle of Bexar. First s heriff of Jefferson Co., TX He was a Captain in the Texas Rev. and Member of 4th Congress of Republic of TX.

In 1885 David Harman, a descendant of James Taylor White gave a fascinating affidavit about his experiences as a very young soldier in the Texas Revolution. Following is an excerpt from the affidavit:

At the first call for Volunteers in the Municipality of Jefferson in 1835, I volunteered in Capt. David Garner's Company. The Company was mustered at Claiborne West's House on Cow Bayou in the municipality of Jefferson (now in Orange Co.).

We were ordered (as I understood) to San Antonio, and on our way to San Antonio we went by San Felipe. There being dissensions in the Council, then in session, we were detained sometime I can't remember how long, awaiting the results of the council (my neighbor Claiborne West being a member).

GARNER, DAVID HESS (1807-1864). David Hess Garner, soldier, sheriff, and Republic of Texas congressman, son of Bradley and Sarah Rachel (Harmon) Garner, Sr., was born in St. Landry or Rapides Parish, Louisiana, in 1807. His father was a native of Maryland who moved to Louisiana about 1790 and fought in the battle of New Orleans. David moved to Texas in 1825 with four of his seven siblings, Jacob Harmon Garner, Isaac Garner, Anne (who married Claiborne West), and Sarah (Mrs. John) McGaffey, and settled at Old Jefferson (the site of present Bridge City) on Cow Bayou.

To help resist Antonio Lp?ez de Santa Annaqv in 1835, Capt. David Garner organized a compan y of volunteers. Armed with flintlock muskets and Bowie knives, his group of nineteen men, including his brother Jacob, set out for San Antonio. They arrived at the camp above Bexar on November 16, 1835. On December 4 Garner and his men were mustered into the company of James Chessher and Willis H. Landrum. Garner participated in the siege of Bexar under Gen. Benjamin R. Milam, which resulted in the capture of Gen. Martn? Perfecto de Cos. He was discharged from the army on December 13, 1835. On January 22, 1838, he received a headright certificate for a third of a league of land in Jefferson County. For his service at Bexar he received a donation grant of 640 acres. On December 14, 1838, he receive d a bounty certificate for 320 acres for service from October 5 to December 13, 1835.

On September 18, 1839, Garner married Matilda Hampshire in Jefferson County. They became th e parents of eleven children. The 1840, 1850, and 1860 census list Garner as a farmer and stock raiser. He was elected sheriff of Jefferson County in 1839. He was elected representative to the Fourth Congress of Texas (1839-40) and served one term. He was again elected sheriff of Jefferson County in 1843 and was reelected to the office in 1845. In 1855 he moved his family to old Indianola, where he continued to engage in the cattle business.

During the Civil War Garner, now too old to serve in the army, supplied the Confederate troops with beef. When his son Jacob Hampshire Garner, who had served in the Thirty-third Cavalry, returned home, he found his father penniless, though loaded with Confederate money and still a patriotic citizen of Texas. Garner died in old Indianola on April 10, 1864. His gravestone bears the Masonic emblem. His wife was a devoted Methodist.

To the Journal:

One of the early settlers in southwest Texas was David Garner, who left many children an d whose descendants to the third and fourth generation are numerous and are among the best ci tizens of the county, and have filled many important positions in offical life and in privat e life and business.
At this late date but little can be learned of his early history. However, this much is known , that he was a resident of Louisiana in 1825 on Bayou Beouf, but whether in the Parish of Ra pides or Avoyelles is unknown. He at that time had a wife and grown children and was engage d in planting and raising stock. It was in 1825 that John McGaffey married the oldest daught er Sarah, and w___ at a later date of nine years located his headright league at Sabine Pass , this county.

David Garner at a later date moved to Texas and died and was buried in her sacred soil. H e raised a family of several children of whom were Sarah, married John McGaffey; Rachel, wh o married Benjamin Johnson; anther daughter who married Claiborne West, who later lived on Co w Bayou, Orange County, Below the railroad crossing and near the place where Larkin R. Thoma s lived at a later date, and who represented Jefferson County in the Consultation at San Feli pe de Austin in 1834, where the first movement foe the independence of Texas was made. His so ns were Jacob, who lived in Sabine Pass and was injured somewhat during the great storm and o verflow there October 12,1886, and died soon after. He(Jacob) left behind him several childr en, all of whom are numbered among the useful citizens and much respected . First Leonard, de ceased, who lived on Johnson Bayou, Louisiana, and was a minister of the gospel; Milton, no w in Beaumont, who raised several children.; a daughter Anna, who married Allie Brock, a prom inent citizen of Beaumont; Bradley, now in the city. The daughters were Anna, married John Mc Call, now dead, she is still at Sabine Pass; Alice, married a Mr. Garrett, who is dead, she r esides at the Pass.

Bradley Garner a son of David Garner Sr., was drowned in Sabine Pass over sixty years ago , while on a visit to see a sick sister in Louisiana; Isaac, who moved away from here befor e the Confederate War, is dead; David Garner was at one time in the early days sheriff of th e county and subsiquently moved to west Texas.; he married a Miss Matilda Hampshire, sister o f Captain Lovan Hampshire of Taylor's Bayou. A full history of all the mambersof the family c annot be given now, but all of them have led exemplary, christain lives, free from any charge s of unlawful violence upon the persons and property of others.

The McCall brothers were natives of Pennsylvania and were raised in what was known as th e Rapp Settlement, in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, situated on the south bank opof the Ohi o River. The settlement was a community of people who held all property in common and often a ssisted those who had lived there but had gone away, when in distress . The writer hereof, i n behalf of John McxCall , after the diasterous flood at Sabine Pass in 1886, made applicatio n to the society for assistance. for him, to which a generous gift was made.

David Garner at one time, during the thirties lived in the place known as the Big Woods, C alcasieu Parish, Louisiana, near the present site of Edgerly. It was there that his daughte r Rachel married Ben Johnson, later of Sabine Pass. Of his daughter who married Claiborne Wes t, but little of the family history is known. West kept a small settlement store in an earl y day on Cow Bayou. In 1836 he contributed largely to the equipment of soldiers going to th e front to fight President Santa Anna at San Antonio, and subsequently moved to Gonzales Coun ty and died there at an advanced age. In 1839 he was one of the fifty seven men reported a s a compitent juryman in the county. He was a prominent man in the affairs of the public in t he county, was looked up to as an authority in many respects.

Of David Garner's descendants no one has ever been indicted by a grand jury. among his gre at great grandchildren is the child of Allie Brock, Esq. There are several others, among the m the grandchildren of Hon. B.J. Johnson of Sabine Pass.

Jacob H Garner applied and was appointed Guardianship of Amelia "Milly" (Hayes) Benjamin Myers' children by the Court at Beaumont. Don't have exact date, but new appraisers were appointed Nov 29, 1847; so previous to that. He was listed as a principal with Thos H Lewis & John B (x his mark) Pevito security.

1880: Jacob Garner age 66 states parents born in VA. Also listed with them are Rachel, age 14, and Othneil, age 4, goddaughters.
(Yellowed Pages show marriage date of 13 June 1843) He was the son of Bradley Isaac GARNER SR, and Rachel HARMON, born in 1814. Jacob's sister was Rachel Garner who married Benjamin Johnson.
BRADLEY ISAAC GARNER, SR., came to Tx, from Louisiana, in 1828 (1850 Census) According to First Settlers of Jefferson Co, Texas by Gifford White, Land Grants in Texas: 130th Applicant: Bradley Garner took and Subscribed to the oath requiredy the 12th Secretary of Land Law that he emigrated to Texas in 1829. It was proven that he was a citizen of Texas at the date of the Declaration of Independence by the oath of Richard Ballew and Wilson W. Gill.
David Garner was possibly Bradley's brother, even though there were 12 years difference in their ages. David GARNER married Matilda Hampshire in 1839 in Jefferson Co, and their children were Emily, born 1840; Jacob, born 1841; David G, born 3; Clairborne, born 1844; Anna, born 1845; Martha, born 1847; John, born 1848; and Alexander, born 1850.

Listed in First Settlers of Jefferson Co, Texas by Gifford White, Land Grants in Texas 47th Applicant: JACOB GARNER took and Subscribed to the oath required by the 12th Secretary of Land Law that he emigrated to Texas in 1829. It was provhat he was a citizen of Texas at the date of the Declaration of Independence by the oath of Clairborn West and BRADLEY GARNER.
The census states Jacob had come to Texas in 1825 (age 11) with David Garner (born in 1807; i.e. 18 years old). Land Grant records state Bradley came in 1828 and Jacob swore he emigrated in 1829, witnessed by Bradley.

John McCall married Martha Garner Jan 1869 months before this census; so curious she is not counted here. Mary, age 6, and Alzina Hayes, 12, living in his household, are children of Martha's uncle James Hayes, Jr. (her mother's brother). Their mother, Emily Burrell Hayes, died previous to this census and relatives took in the young children. Another Hayes child, Nancy, 8 yrs old, was taken in by Jamss McCall.
Jacob Garner took in Matilda, 10 yrs old (my ancestor).
Marie Johnson, living with John McCall, is James Hayes, Jr.'s mother. After J.H. Sr. died, she married Francis Gallier, Jr - who had also passed by this time.

Died:
For a long time, I believed that Garner died of pneumonia due to much exposure to the winds and rain (from intense hurricane on Oct 12, 1886) but Bill Quick has determined that Garner lived on for about four months months after the storm, and that his actual death date was February 27, 1887.

Notes:

Rachel was the sister of Jacob Harmon Garner who married Matilda Hayes. Their father was Bradley Garner, Sr, and Rachel Harmon. She is buried in Old Sabine Pass Cemetery.

Mrs. C. H. Arcineaux, who now resides at 1430 College Street, was born at Sabine Pass in 1864, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. T. R. Jackson. Mrs. Jackson was, prior to her marriage, Mary McGaffey, daughter of John McGaffey of New Hampshire and Sara Garner of Louisiana, who migrated to Texas in 1825, and were among the first settlers of Sabine Pass in its early days as a Port of Entry. They journeyed into Texas in an ox cart, over prairie and marsh land, bringing cattle from Louisiana. They were granted a league and labor of land from the Spanish government and some of this land still belongs to their descendents, including Mrs. Arcineaux. ( A )

Mrs. Arcineaux clearly recalls incidents of pioneer days told by her parents and grand-parents: how Dick Dowling and his small band of Irishmen defended the Pass against a fleet of Northern ships during the Civil War; the part her mother played in rescue work, how she helped cook for the soldiers of the south; and also of hardships suffered following the war. She tells harrowing stories of death and devastation wrought by the 3 storms, which she saw sweep over the Pass; the 1886 storm, which took a heavy toll of human life and swept hundreds of cattle into the waters of the Gulf of Mexico; the 1900 storm, which destroyed docks and wharves, blasting hopes of the Kountz Brothers, northern capitalists who sought to build a great seaport at Sabine Pass; and the 1915 storm, which wrecked her family home, causing its occupants to take refuge on a rescue train sent out from Beaumont in which city they have since that time resided.

Regardless of these storms, which took a heavy toll of cattle all along the gulf coast, the Jackson and Arcineaux families have remained in the cattle business. In the early days, before shipping facilities were available in the territory, they drove their cattle overland to Morgan City, Louisiana, for shipment to foreign ports. They were forced to swim those herds across the Neches and Sabine Rivers, and the manner in which it was most successfully done was for a cowboy to swim his pony by the side of a lead steer, holding its horns. The herd would then follow.

Other recollections of Mrs. Arcineaux include the regular visits paid to Sabine Pass by ships of the Morgan Steamship Lines, which came from New York and foreign ports. Cotton was their main cargo out of the Pass, but they brought sugar, coffee and other necessities not produced in Texas. She also tells of the mosquitoes which bred in the swamp land, how "mosquito bars" or nets were used at night. How sometimes the insects would become so numerous that people going outside would have to wear nets, drawn down from their hat brim and fastened at the neck. Much of the ill health of the early settlers were attributed to the bite of the mosquito.

While perusing cemetery files at lunch, I came across the Ranger Cemetery in Calhoun County.

It has some Garner's listed. They are Jacob Garner, born Dec 9 1841, died June 14, 1914; his wife, Mrs. Sarah Garner, b. Nov. 1, 1846, died June 27, 1914; and Jacob Edgar Garner, b. Nov 22, 1872, died June 11, 1914.

I think they were parents and this was their son. They all died in 1914 -- wonder what that was...a fever, hurricane, etc?

By 1870 Anna and James were living in Sabine Pass with their children. He listed his occupation as a stock raiser. Their residence was next door to William MAAS and Charlotte GENTZ (both listed as 52 years old, along with their two daughl vena age 19 and Laura, age 6.)
In 1905 Anna went to Miami, Florida to live with daughter, Mrs. J.L. McGathen (Francis) and be near son Cole McCall. She was brought back to Sabine Pass for burial.

"Captain Johnson of Bolivar peninsula, who last Saturday, together with Mr. R.H. Slaughter and others oganized a relief committee at the above place for the Sabine sufferers sailed over to Galveston yesterday morning.....
We visited all the surrounding country and part of the pass, and found that the damage and destruction were greater in the country than in the city proper. The first house we came to was Mr. Brad Johnson's place. There was hardly anything left of it to tell the tale. The fences had disappeared completely and all the trees and crops were totally annialated. Brad Johnson was raised at the Pass and is about forty-five years old, and stated that the Sabine blow was the severest hurricane he had ever witnessed. Moise Broussard's house was situated just next to Brad Johnson's and had also suffered more or less. A tank which had been scraped out for stock watering purposes was discovered here with the only fresh water left at Sabine Pass. Out of a total of eleven hundred cattle, owned by Mr. Broussard, which were pasturing at the time of the storm five or six miles this side of the Pass, not one animal escaped he waters. The search for dead bodies is still progressing. A young lady was fished from the jetty works on Saturday who was supposed to be Miss Annie McCall, although the body was not positively identified as such. The body of Homer King still remains undiscovered. "

Notes:

By 1880, Charles and Matilda were living next door to Anna McCall, who was by then a widow and her youngest child was Claudie McCall. That caught my eye because my grandmother, Lillian Courts Jones' mother was Claudie Gentz. On further scrutiny, I see that Claudie McCall was born 1872, and I also saw that her father died that same year - that's sad. In the meantime, in 1872 when she was born and had lost her father, my Matilda and Charles' youngest child at that time was Lena, 2 yrs old. They had another girl in '74, and then in '76 is when my Claudie Gentz, my g-grandma, was born. I'm thoroughly convinced that my Claudie Gentz was named after little Claudie McCall, now 4 yrs old!! I was really excited to find where my grandmother's name came from. Some records have her as "Claude" which I knew she went by Claudie. But anyway -- that's where her name came from!
I also found Anna McCall in 1900. By then she declared 7 births and 5 living. All 5 are still home. Missing is little Claudie McCall. Since we have no 1890 census, we don't know when she died - unless there's some other record I'm not aware . But now I wonder if perhaps the child died around the time that my Claudie was born to further enhance the honor of having a baby named for her.
