Remnant Tax Digest, Leaves Gone Front and Back. Explanatory: This is the first tax digest found in the court house, and was taken to give a practically complete census of the heads of families of that date, to identify their lands as headrights, and possible bounty grants for Revolutionary service, and to replace in a measure the census of 1790, all of which for Georgia was destroyed by the British during the War of 1812 in Washington, D. C. There is no complete digest until 1802, only a few pages left in the interim. The remnants for 1792, 1793, 1794 have been published in "Some Tax Digests of Georgia" Ruth Blair, State Historian and Archivist, and give valuable information. The entry reads: Joseph Moler, 1 poll, 250 acres Wilkes Co.

The largest congregation was north of Boonesboro, toward Limestone. It was on Hinkston Creek, near Mount Sterling Kentucky. Jonas Hahn and his son Peter were here, as were the Welty, Kern, Rebelin, Ramsey, Moler, Garver/Garber, Ockerman, Keithley, Landess, Hendricks, Coleglazer, Lantz, Rowland, Sears, West, Wyatt, Zimmerman families. This was a "Brethren Association" church, and went Disciples after 1826.

Joseph Moler undoubtedly spoke German and was a member of the early German Baptist Church. While in Kentucky, the Molers, along with the Welty, Ockerman, Keithley and Landess families, were prominent in the Brethren congregation formed at Hinkston Creek, Bath County and their meeting place on Somerset Creek, Nicholas County, now East Union. Many of these families relocated to Highland County, Ohio in the first years of the 19th century, Joseph Moler going there about 1814.

The Crose Families. Michael Crose was born in Maryland in 1765, or earlier, and his wife, Mary Crose, was born in Virginia in 1769. They were both members of the German Baptist or Dunkard Church. They both spoke the German language and brought their German Bible with them to Kentucky about 1780. In all probability their ancestors came to Pennsylvania with a colony of German Baptists in 1719 from near Kassel Hess, in Westfalia Province, Germany. This colony spread over parts of Pennsylvania, Maryland and Virginia, and finally a small community came to Bourbon and Nicholas counties, Kentucky. Among them were Blounts, Shrouts, Molars, Hahns and the Crose or Krauses. They built a church at the forks of Somerset Creek in Nicholas County, which they named East Union, and in which they preached in the German language.

Joseph Moler, another veteran of the Revolution, emigrated to the area of Hamer Twp. with Lewis Moler, before the year 1815. He chose to locate his land grant on Kerr Survey No. 6, 713, northwest of Danville. The Moler farm was taken over by the pioneer, Jacob Landess, as early as 1815. He was a Dutch Quaker from Pennsylvania.

The last Will and Testament of Joseph Moller sen'r. whereas and being in my proper mind and sences do by these presents bequeath to all my children and the immediate offspring of them that have deceased, viz. Mary Keahly, Joseph Moller, Isaac Moller, Anny Little, Lewis Moller, Catherine Landess, Esther Mace, John Moller. It is my will that all these being my lawful heirs shall have what ... equally divided among them after all Just Claims is paid of my burial expenses and of settling my estate and I do hereby appoint my son John Moller my sole executor to settle the estate and as part of my children live at a distance and none of them are dead when the money can all be made ready which cannot be til December 1839 if it should [ill] then and when it may be collected John shall not be bound to pay them interest. The reason for this is some of the grandchildren which will be heirs being young and scattered it may be some time before they get it therefore they are only to have got it when they may an equal part of the sum total when a dividend is struck whereas I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 20th day of January 1836 as my last Will and testament. This day it was proved to the satisfaction of the court that Joseph Moller a Revolutionary pensioner of the United States departed this life the 27th day of January 1836 leaving the following children, to-wit: John Moller and Lewis Moller who reside in Highland County; Isaac Moler, Esther wife of Job Mace and Mary wife of Daniel Keithler who have gone to parts unknown. That Joseph Moller left no widow and that said John Moller is the sole executor of the last will and testament of said Joseph.

I found Joseph Moler later at the Falls Creek Church in Highland Co OH and the hint/possibility that he died at the home of his son, John Moler at the Obannon or Stonelick Church. I have not found any grave for Joseph or John around Stonelick. There is a Moler Road just northwest of the present church or southeast of the Obannon Church where John Moler lived. I do not have a complete burial list of the Stouder Cemetery at the Obannon Church site just southeast of Goshen OH. The Stonelick Church sits at the edge of the Stonelick State Park near Edenton OH. The Park was made of several of the Brethren farms. The surviving congregation of the old Obannon Church is now pastored at the Stonelick Church of the Brethren.

Joseph died in Highland County and was buried in the Stouder Cemetery in neighboring Clermont County next to his wife Susannah, who had died earlier at the home of their son, John Mason Moler. The Stouder Cemetery was associated with families of the Obannon Brethren Church.

Will:
I, Isaac Moler of Nicholas County and State of Kentucky, do make this my last Will and Testament. First, that after my death all my just debts and funeral expenses be punctually paid by Executors and then that my estate, real, personal and mixed shall be equally divided between all my children with this exception: that whereas heretofore my son Alexander Moler purchased of my son Elza Moler all his interest or expected interest in all my estate for which he has paid him Three hundred dollars and as said sale was made by knowledge and consent and said payment of Three hundred Dollars has been made I therefore will and bequeath to my son Elza no portion whatever of my estate, but in order that said contract between my son Alexander Moler and my son Elza Moler may be carried out and have its effect according to the true meaning and intention thereof I therefore will and bequeath the portion of my estate which would have been given to my son Elza if no such contract had been made to my son Alexander Moler and that my meaning may be fully understood my Will is that Elza is to have no share of my estate and that Alexander is to have two shares of my estate both real and personal. I further will and bequeath that my executor hereafter to be appointed shall have full and complete power to sell and convey to the purchaser the farm on which I now live containing about one hundred and sixty acres be the same more or less with the exception of the graveyard lot in the Orchard which is not to be sold but which graveyard lot I will and bequeath to my son Alexander Moler and his successors in office forever for the use of a Graveyard, and whereas my Daughter Scilia Barbee has departed this life leaving two children Elijah and Isaac Newton both infants now, my Will is that said infant children shall be entitled to that portion of my estate to which their mother would have been entitled had she been living, that is to say that one eleventh part of my entire estate be paid to them by my Executors when they become twenty one years of age, but no portion of said estate is to be paid to them nor to any Guardian appointed for them until they become of full age. But the same shall remain in the hands of my Executors and be put to interest for their benefit until they are twenty one years of age and then paid to them by my Executors provided that my Executors may appreciate the interest of their share of any money in their hands belonging to said infants to their tuition and support and if in the discretion of my Executors it shall become necessary they take the principal for the support and tuition of said infants. Now as I have ten living children and one daughter Scilia Barbee who is dead now my Will is that my estate be divided into eleven equal parts and the children aforesaid of Scilia Barbee to have one part and my son Alexander Moler is to have two parts and my son Elza is to have nothing and each of my other children to have one part. And lastly I hereby nominate Constitute and appoint my son Alexander Moler and my friend Thomas Clark Executors of this my last Will & Testament hereby revoking all other former wills by me heretofore made. This instrument of writing purporting to be the last Will and Testament of Isaac Moler, dec. was this day produced in Court and provided by the oath of Abraham Shulse one of the subscribing witnesses thereto who also proved that John Carter another witness thereto did attest said Will as a witness at the request of the Testator and in his presence. Deed - Isaac Moler Executors, Deed to John A. Crockett. This indenture made and entered into this 14th day of October 1856 between Alexander Moler and Thomas Clark Executors of the last Will and Testament of Isaac Moler dec. late of Nicholas County, State of Kentucky of the one part and John A. Crockett of said County,State of the other part witnesseth that the said party of the first part for and in consideration of the sum of forty nine dollars 48 cents per acre one third in hand part it being $2,838.18 the receipt of which is hereby acknowledged in that to be paid on the 1st day of March 1858 and third on the 1st day of March 1859 for when notes are executed and delivered they the same Alexander Moler, Thomas Clark as Executors of forsaid have heretofore sold and do by their presence will acknowledge John A. She died at the age of 42 years, 6 months, one day. She was buried in an above-ground vault. Also buried in the Breckenridge Cemetery is Elizabeth Moler of Kentucky, age 44 years, who died on the same day as Catherine, 4 Feb 1847. Elizabethas buried in a masoleum, along with an infant daughter buried with her. Catherine's relationship to Elizabeth is undetermined, but best guess is sister-in-law.

one daughter who died in infancy and is buried with her mother on February 4, 1847, in the family cemetery on the original homeplace. One would suspect that both died at the time of childbirth. They rest in an above ground vault which is unusual for this part of the country. It was Catharine's death which is believed to have caused the start of the plot.

One of the well known residents of Clinton township is Joseph Moler, who was born in Nicholas county, Kentucky, June 2, 1834. In 1853 he came to Indiana and has since made this state his place of abode. He is the son of John and Sarah (Colliver) Moler, the former born in Bourbon county, Kentucky, in the same vicinity as his son, Joseph. His parents were Pennsylvania Dutch who came to Kentucky about 1790, his father, Joseph Moler, having been a soldier in the Revolutionary war. In 1853 John Moler and family came to Putnam county, Indiana, locating in Clinton township on the land where Joseph Moler now resides. It was then only partly cleared and had a few rude buildings on it, and here the elder Moler lived, and died on November 3, 1866, at the age of sixty-one years, having been born November 30, 1805. His wife died in 1856, at the age of forty-seven years. She was born in Montgomery county, Indiana, in 1809. Only one of their children was born in Indiana those to reach maturity were: Marr, who married Russell Allen, of Greencastle, and died in that city in 1873 or 1874; Joseph, of this review; Richard H., a farmer in Parke county, Indiana: Jeff. T., who lives in Louisiana, Missouri; Susan E., who married R. D. Hamilton and died when in middle life; Levi, who went to Missouri, where he died; Jemima, the wife of Mr. Hannah and living in Missouri; Presley C., a bachelor and still living on the old homestead; Emma J., who married Caleb Bratton, of Boone county, Indiana.
Joseph Moler was nineteen years old when he came to Indiana. He remained at home until he was twenty-five pears old, assisting in clearing the place. On November 1, 1859, he married Lucy P. Newgent, he being twenty-five and she eighteen; they had lived on adjoining farms for some time. A sketch of her father, Edward Newgent, appears elsewhere in this volume. After their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Moler spent two years in Pulaski county, Indiana, then moved back to Putnam county on the farm of Mr. Moler's father, taking charge of part of it. In 1868 he rented and took charge of the entire farm of two hundred and forty acres. Later he bought the interests of others in the home place, owning eighty acres. He has made extensive improvements on his place, building a fine home in 1891, and he has good barns and devotes considerable time to stock raising, making grains also a specialty, feeding what grain the place produces. He has laid two hundred and fifty rods of tile. He is very successful as a general farmer. Mr. Moler is an independent thinker and keeps well posted on political and current events. He is no partisan and always votes for the men whom he deems to be the best qualified for the offices sought.
Three children have been born to Mr. and Mrs. Moler, one of whom died when ten years of age. Levi Shelby Moler is a farmer in Clinton township, he was candidate for nomination as county clerk in 1910. Stella May married J. S. Brown, a farmer of Woonsocket, South Dakota.
On November 1, 1909, was celebrated Mr. and Mrs. Moler's fiftieth wedding anniversary, which was quite an event in the Moler family and greatly enjoyed by all who were fortunate enough to be present. The only anniversary guest who was also present at their marriage was John Newgent, cousin of Mrs. Moler, he having enjoyed the celebration after a half century lapse from the nuptial day almost as much as the elder1y couple themselves. Rev. Joseph Skeeters, now deceased, performed the marriage ceremony.
Fraternally Mr. Moler is a Mason and he takes a great interest in Masonry, endeavoring to live up to its wholesome teachings in his every day life.

Allen Moller, farmer, P. O. Sharpsburg, was born on the farm where he now lives, Jan. 27, 1818, and is a son of Joseph and Elizabeth (Welty) Moller. He was born in Georgia, in 1780, and was one of the early settlers in Kentucky, where he died in 1825. His wife Elizabeth, was born in North Carolina in 1783, and died in 1870. The result of their union was eleven children. Allen, our subject, was educated in the common schools of Nicholas County and entered upon his career in life as a farmer. He was married in Bourbon County, Oct. 17, 1867, to Mrs. Matilda Bramblett, widow of Henry Bramblett, and daughter of Covington and Sarah (Crouse) Utterbach. He was born in Virginia and died July 20, 1864. His wife was born in Bourbon County and died Jan. 15, 1879. Mrs. Moller was born in Bourbon County, Aug. 19, 1830. Mr. Moller is a member of the Christian Church at Sharpsburg; has also been a prominent member of the Masonic order for a number of years. He owns a farm of seventy-five acres, and is an energetic and enterprising farmer. He is a Republican.

In the name of God amen, I Allen Moler of the County of Nicholas and State of Kentucky knowing the uncertainty of life and the certainty of death and being of sound and disposing mind and memory do make and publish this my last Will and Testament.
First: I will that all my just debts and funeral expenses be paid.
Second: I will and bequeath to my beloved wife Malinda Moler for her use and benefit during her natural life all my real property situated in Nicholas County, Kentucky and to the said Malinda Moler I will and bequeath absolutely all my personal property including stock of every description, cash money notes, farming implements, machinery, and all my house hold and kitchen furniture.
Third: I will and desire that at the death of my wife Malinda Moler that the Real Estate herein before mentioned after having been duly advertised to be put up and sold to the highest bidder, the terms of said sale to be one third of the purchase price thereof cash, and the other two thirds in one and two years, due and payable. Said deferred payments to beaer interest and the proceeds of the sale of said Real Estate divided as hereinafter described.
Fourth: I will and bequeath to Thomas S. Bramblett my stepson who has resided with and worked for me since he was of the age of ten years, and who has been a kind and dutiful stepson, the sum of Five Hundred Dollars ($500). Said sum to be paid to Thomas S. Bramblett out of the proceeds of the sale of the Real Estate herein willed and bequeathed to his mother Malinda Moler during her natural life.
Fifth: I will and bequeath that the Remainder of the proceeds of the sale of said real estate herein before spoken of after deducting the Five Hundred Dollars ($500) willed and bequeathed to my step-son Thomas S. Bramblett be equally divided between the legal heirs of my sister Catherine Breckenridge Decd. who died a resident of the State of Illinois, the said heirs or heir of said Catherine Breckenridge to receive together that portion which would have fallen to the parent had he been now living.
And my nephew John Bell and Joseph Bell, who were and are the legal heirs of my sister Matilda Bell now deceased, said John and Joseph Bell to receive together that portion which would have fallen to their mother Matilda Bell had she been now living.
And my sister Zilla McVey, who is a resident of this Nicholas County,
and my sister Susan Kookendoffer who is a resident of this County and the wife of G.W. Kookendoffer,
and my sister Joann Kookendoffer who is a resident of this County and the wife of Wm. Kookendoffer,
and my half brother Henry Moler who is a resident of Boon County, Indiana.
I name and appoint my friend and brother-in-law Samuel H. Booth as my Executor to execute this will and he is hereby authorized and impressed to make sale at the proper time of the Real estate spoken of herein, and to convey the same to the purchaser thereof. Being afflicted by the almost entire loss of my Eye-sight, and having had this will read in my hearing and understanding fully and perfectly its contents I hereby authorize the above named Samuel H. Booth to sign my name to the same, and request him to guide my hand in making my mark herein. Witness my hand this 26 day of June 1885.

Death of a Giantess.
The agent of Miss Kate Keathley (Keithley), the Missouri giantess, was telegraphed at this city Wednesday morning to the effect that Miss K. died on Saturday last, at her home, about twenty-five miles from St. Louis.
She had just returned from a trip to Omaha.
Many people all over the country will remember Miss Keathley, probably the heaviest woman ever exhibited.
She weighed 812 pounds. (sic: postcard said 675 lbs)
Her education was much better than is usually possessed by persons of her class and she was able to converse intelligently and agreeably with her visitors.

10TH CAVALRY

Tenth Cavalry-Cols., James A. Barrett, Dudley Wickersham,
James Stuart; Lieut.-Cols., Dudley Wickersham, James Stuart, Samuel N. Hitt; Majs., Joseph S. Smith, Marshall L. Stephenson, Elvis P. Shaw, Samuel N. Hitt, George Snelling, Joseph S. McCartney, David H. Wilson. This regiment was organized at Camp Butler in the latter part of Sept., 1861, and was mustered into the U.S. service on Nov. 25, for three years. In the latter part of Jan., 1862, it moved to Quincy where it was occupied in drill and learning the duties of soldiers until March 13, when it moved to Benton barracks. Early in July, a detachment was at Cane Hill, Ark., where it engaged a very superior force, killing 1 and taking many prisoners. In October Lieut.-Col. James Stuart, with 105 men, attacked a camp of 300 Confederates near Marshfield, Mo., killing 4, wounding many and capturing a captain with 26 men, totally dispersing the remainder, with a loss of 1 killed and 1 wounded. In November about 70 men of Cos. C and M were attacked by a force of about 1,200, at Clark's mills, Mo., and after a fight of several hours acceded to a demand for
surrender, the officers and men being immediately paroled.
The 3rd battalion of the regiment remained at Fayetteville and was occupied in scouting the country, detachments making several expeditions south of the Boston mountains, defeating the enemy in skirmishes at Van Buren, Frog bayou and other places. The 1st battalion was assigned to the 3rd brigade 1st division participated in the engagement at Cotton Plant, Ark., in July, and arrived at Helena on July 12. This battalion participated in two lengthy expeditions, the capture of Arkansas Post, the Yazoo Pass expedition to Fort Pemberton, besides smaller scouts, and was in the engagement at Richmond, La., in June, 1862, where it lost 2 killed and 1 lieutenant with 21 men prisoners. The companies of the battalion were separated much of the time as escorts to various generals. The regiment participated in the engagement at Bayou Meto, being on the right of the line of battle, and lost 1 lieutenant and 1 private killed. In Sept., 1863, it took an active and honorable part in the engagement at Bayou Fourche and the capture of Little Rock, Ark.; was with the column that pursued the enemy and returned to Little Rock. The regiment having reenlisted, it was sent home for furlough, arriving at Camp Butler Feb. 28, 1864. The non-veterans of the regiment accompanied the expedition under Gen. Steele to cooperate with Gen. Banks' Red River campaign, and actively participated in its various engagements. On July 14, at Bayou Des Arc, near Searcy Ark., 225 men were surrounded and attacked by about
1,200 confederates, but they cut their way out with a loss of 2 killed and 20 prisoners, a number of the latter being
wounded. Successful skirmishes were had by detachments at
Cypress bayou, Austin, Cotton Plant, Springfield, West Point and other places. On Jan. 27, 1865, the veterans and recruits of the regiment were consolidated into nine companies, those of the 15th Ill. cavalry into three companies, and all were reorganized into the 1Oth Ill. veteran volunteer cavalry.

Tenth (Reorganized) Cavalry.-Col., James Stuart; Lieut.-Col.,
Eagleton Carmichael' Majs., Thomas D. Vredenburgh, George A.
Willis, William A. Chapin. The reorganized regiment being
ordered to New Orleans La., left Brownsville, Ark., March 16,
1865, and took boats at Devall's Bluff for Greenville, La.
While at the latter place the Confederate ram Webb passed New
Orleans in its endeavor to get to sea, but finding this
impossible she was run ashore about 10 miles below the city,
where her crew, attempting escape in the swamps, was with one
exception captured by a detachment from the regiment which was
sent in pursuit. On Nov. 22, 1865, the regiment was mustered
out and sent north via Galveston and New Orleans, reaching
Camp Butler Jan. 1, 1866.

On 28 March 1855 he married Sarah Jane Matthews, performed by John Cooper. Sarah was born April 30, 1839 in Cumberland Co, Kentucky. She was one of 11 children of Joseph Matthews and Tabitha Rutherford. (Their marriage record found in Book 351-1855 DAR V25d p 97; license #1466; 19 Mar 1855)
Sarah and Joseph had two children. One died in infancy. Preston was born 2 Dec 1858. and resided with his mother in 1876.
Joseph enlisted in Army in September 1862 in Co E, 114th Illinois infantry for three years. He was taken sick at Camp Butler, and died at home, November 29, 1862. Preston was 4 years old. Robert E. Berry was named guardian.

One Hundred and Fourteenth Infantry. - Col., James W.
Judy; Lieut.-Cols., John F. King, Samuel N. Shoup; Majs.,
Joseph M. McLane, John M. Johnson. This regiment was organized in the months of July and August and was mustered into the U.S. service at Camp Butler on Sept. 18, 1862. Cos. A and D were from Cass county, B, C, E, G, H and I from Sangamon county, and Cos. F and K from Menard county. The regiment left Camp Butler for Memphis, Tenn., Nov. 8, arrived on the 16th, and remained there about 10 days on picket duty. On May 2, 1863, it joined in the movement to the rear of Vicksburg; was engaged in the
battle of Jackson, losing 5 men killed and wounded; arrived in the rear of Vicksburg on May 18 and participated in the siege, with a loss of 20 men in killed and wounded. On the surrender of Vicksburg the regiment was ordered to move against the Confederate Gen. Johnston, who retreated to Jackson Miss., and during the siege of that place the loss of the regiment in killed and wounded was 7 men. It was then ordered to Oak Ridge, Miss., and while doing picket duty there had several skirmishes with the guerrillas, 1 man being killed and 2 men captured while on duty. On Feb. 5, 1864, the regiment left on a scout and engaged the enemy at Wyatt, Miss., thus enabling the cavalry to cross the Tallahatchie at New Albany. In June it went out again and engaged the enemy at Guntown, in which action it lost 205 in killed, wounded and missing out of 397 men. On July 13 the brigade to which the regiment was attached was surprised by the enemy near Harrisburg, Miss., but after a sharp engagement the Confederates were repulsed, the regiment receiving the thanks of the brigade commander on the field for the gallant and effective charge made by it. The regiment lost
40 men in killed and wounded. It was in the battle of Nash-
ville, made several charges during the engagement, and lost 15 men in killed and wounded. In March, 1865, it embarked for Spanish Fort, Ala., and was engaged during the siege of that place. The regiment was mustered out on Aug. 3, 1865.

He married Susannah Randolph Nov 1857 in Sangamon Co. Susannah was born 1839 in Sangamon Co. They had six children by her, two of which died in infancy. The other children were Leanor, b 1859 in Springfield; Mary A., Elmer P., and Simon F. Records state that Susannah died three years after their marriage in about 1860, so it's not clear how she could have had six children in three years.
He was living with his father in Sangamon Co, Illinois in 1860. The four children lived with their uncles and aunts in Missouri. Census shows: Elma (Elmore), Susanna, Leanor living with Elma's father, Preston.
He remarried Mrs. Mary J. Long, who was born in 1833, in Pennsylvania sometime after 1860. They resided in Cotton Hill, Sangamon Co, Illinois, then moved to Gretna, Forest City Pct, Sarpy County, Nebraska before 1876. The children lived witheir uncles and aunts in Missouri.

Elmore Breckenridge, who has been a patient in an Omaha hospital for several weeks, died there last Friday. He has been ill for a long time with liver trouble, and his death was not unexpected when it happened for he had gradually been growing weaker for several days. The funeral services were held last Sunday morning at the home of his son, Frank, where he had made his home for several years past, being conducted by Rev. C.A. Huyck of Ashland. Interment was made in the Forest City cemetery. A large concourse of friends following the remains to their last resting place. Elmore Breckenridge was born Nov. 4, 1834 in Sangamon county, Illinois. He was married in November 1857 to Miss Susannah Randolph, who died a good many years ago. Six children were born to this union, two dying in infancy. The children are Mrs. Garrett, of Almeno, Kas., Mrs. Crippen of Council Bluffs Elmer P. Breckenridge of Kooskia, Idaho and F.P. Breckenridge of Gretna. Elmore Breckenridge has resided in Forest City precinct for many years and made many friends. He was of a family of thirteen children, ten of whom are still living. The deceased remembered Abraham Lincoln well for the great Martyr was also born in Sangamon county. He heard the famous debate between Lincoln and Stephen A. Douglas and was well acquainted with both of them. He had a fund of anecdotes of the early days in Illinois, and when in the right mood could talk interestingly. He was a cousin of John C. Breckenridge, who was one of the vice-presidents of the United States, and was connected with all the Breckenridges told about in history. He was married to Mrs. Mary Long some years ago. She died a few years ago. The old settlers are passing away one by one and soon the last one will be laid away. Elmore P. Breckenridge was a good man, filling his place in the world, and leaving a grown family of children and many friends to mourn his loss.

Said of Lilly in Portrait Biographical Al bum of Sangamon Co, Illinois, "She was the recipienf good educational advantages and excellent home training, and developed the graces of mind and heart that give her influence and prominence in society and qualify her to discharge the maniforld duties that belong to wifehood and motherhood." And as said of their daughters, Inez and Ida, "The young ladies are educated, refined and pleasing in manners, ornaments to society and useful in religious and benevolent circles."

(History of Sangamon County, 1881) Mr. C. Breckenridge now owns four hundred and eighty acres of land valued at $50 an acre; two hundred and fifty acres are under good cultivation. He raises grain and fees cattle for market. Himself and wife are members of the Christian Church, at the south fork, which, at present, is in a flourishing condition. In politics, he is a Republican.

Note:

Cleophas C. Breckenridge: The Breckenridge homestead consists of four hundred and two acres of the valuable land that makes Sangamon County a fit home for enterprising and progressive farmers. It forms a part of section 1, Cotton Hill Township, and is furnished with all the modern conveniences for the perfect transaction of the work to which it is devoted and the comfort of the family which made it their home. The buildings are first class in design and construction and include an especially comfortable and well furnished dwelling which, with its surroundings, is represented by a view elsewhere in this volume. In this edifice, a room has been set apart for the large and interesting collection of relics that have been secured by Mr. Breckenridge, and that forms a veritable museum of curious and valuable mementoes of the war and other specimens, such as well repay examination. Many of these relics were obtained at great trouble and would prove a valuable addition to the collection preserved by the State in the museum at Springfield. In Bourbon County, Ky., near Paris, the late Preston Breckenridge was born August 5, 1807, and in Nicholas County the eyes of Catherine Moler opened to the light, August 30, 1804. This couple were united in marriage at the bride's home November 17, 1827, and spent a few years of wedded life in the county where their marriage took place. They then removed to this county, arriving in October, 1834, and at once taking up their residence on the farm now owned and operated by their son, our subject. The faithful wife and mother died February 4, 1847, and the father subsequently married Lucy D. Robb, who survived until November 18, 1854. Mr. Breckenridge lived until July 26, 1880, reaching a goodly old age. His first marriage was blessed by the birth of seven sons and five daughters. He was a near relation of Hon. John C. Breckenridge, whose connection with politics is well known and belongs to the annals of history. The gentleman of whom we write was the sixth child of his parents and was born in the township in which he still lives, August 7, 1836. He passed his boyhood and youth amid the usual surroundings of a farm and in the pursuance of the studies and occupations suited to his years, developing his natural abilities, both physical and mental, and fully equipping himself for the battle of life. The vocation in which his respected father was engaged was that which he chose as his own, and the success that has crowned his efforts proves the wisdom of his choice. It needs but a glance over his broad fields to convince the beholder that he makes of his calling both an art and a science, and he is a close student of the physical conditions that increase or diminish the crop prospect. The patriotism that slumbers in the breast of every true American was aroused to its highest pitch in the heart of Mr. Breckenridge when the attempt was made on the National life in 1861 and before the summer was past he was enrolled among his country's defenders. His name was attached to the muster roll of Company D, Thirty-third Illinois Infantry and ere long he was at the front winning the admiration of his comrades and the commendation of his superior officers for his bravery, devotion to duty and cheerfulness under all circumstances. "My country first, my personal comfort afterward," was the burden of his actions, and no duty was too severe for his gallant spirit to endure so long as it promised to keep intact the old flag. At the assault on Vicksburg, May 22, 1863, he was severely wounded in the right side and was unable to do duty for several weeks. Besides that famed encounter, he took part in the battles of Fredericktown, Cotton Plant, Magnolia Hill, Raymond, Jackson, Champion Hill, Black River Bridge, the siege of Vicksburg, the second battle of Jackson, Ft. Esperanza and Coldwater. At the residence of Johnson and Mary (Thomas) Cave, in Montgomery County, this State, January 30, 1868, the marriage rites of Mr. Breckenridge and Lillian T. Cave were solemnized. The bride was the second child and eldest daughter of the host and hostess who had removed from their native State, Kentucky, to this county in 1861 and thence departed to Montgomery County. Mrs. Breckenridge was born in Ballard County, Ky., August 12, 1848. She was the recipient of good educational advantages and excellent home training, and developed the graces of mind and heart, that give her influence and prominence in society and qualify her to discharge the manifold duties that belong to wifehood and motherhood. She is the mother of three children, one of whom was removed from earth in infancy. The survivors are Inez A., now the wife of C. F. Spicer, and Ida B., who yet brightens the parental fireside by her presence. The young ladies are educated , refined and pleasing in manners, ornaments to society and useful in religious and benevolent circles. Mr. Breckenridge has filled some of the school offices in a manner creditable to his judgment and beneficial to the people. Note:

Cleophas Breckenridge, son of Preston and Catharine (Moler) Breckenridge. The father was born in Bourbon county, Kentucky, August 5, 1807; the mother was also born in Kentucky. They were married November 17, 1827, and came to this county in 1834. They had thirteen children - twelve grown to maturity - eight sons and four daughters. The father was elected to the legislature of 1852-2, beating Abraham Lincoln for the nomination. He was also a member of the board of supervisors for the year of 1873. He died July 25, 1880. Cleophas, Hugh, Joseph and Preston were in the army. The name Breckenridge was derived from a circumstance that occurred in one of the religious wars that took place in Scotland. Two brothers, named McIlvain, were Protestants, and engaged in the conflict, when their party was defeated. They took refuge on a ridge, escaped and came to America, settling in Virginia, and in remembrance took the name of "Brack-on-ridge," from whom the family descended. Mr. Breckenridge has in his possession a twig plucked from this brack or bush in Scotland, and brought to America by John Craig. Mr. B., is a lover of strange and quaint old relics, and of the many among his collection are two gourds, carried by his grandfather through the War of 1812, one of which he used for dipping water and the other for carrying priming powder. Mr. B., also has a pocket compass used by his grandfather during the same war, for a guide in cloudy weather, and as a time piece when the sun shone. The subject of this sketch was the sixth son, and was born in this township, at the old homestead, August 7, 1836. He was married to Lillian T. Cave, from Kentucky, January 30, 1868. They have two children living: Inez A., and Ida B.; one who died in infancy. When Mr. B., first settled here, he purchased one hundred and sixty acres of land and commenced farming, and erected a carding machine, the first in this section of the country; also owned and run the first water mill on the south fork of the Sangamon river. Mr. C. Breckenridge now owns four hundred and eighty acres of land valued at $50 an acre; two hundred and fifty acres are under good cultivation. He raises grain, and feeds cattle for market. THIRTY-THIRD INFANTRY.
(Three Years)


The Thirty-third Infantry Illinois Volunteers was organ-
ized at Camp Butler, Illinois, in the month of September, 1861, by Colonel Chas. E. Hovey, and mustered into the United States service by Captain T. G. Pitcher, U. S. A.

September 20, moved to Ironton, Mo., via St. Louis. Re-
mained at Ironton during the winter, with occasional scouts into the country. On one of these the battle of Fredericktown was fought - Company A on skirmish line. March 1862, moved, with the command of General Steele, southward, passing into Arkansas at Pitman's Ferry, and marching, via Pocahontas and Jacksonport, to Batesville, where it joined General Curtis' army; thence, via Jacksonport, Augusta and Clarendon, to Helena.

July 7, at Cache creek, or Cotton Plant, several companies
participated in a battle with Texas rangers, in which Company A rescued and brought off a field piece belonging to our cavalry. The rebels had a large number killed, and were pursued for some miles. According to our official report one hundred and twenty three rebel dead were found on the main battlefield, and a number were killed in the pursuit. Seven were killed and fifty-seven wounded on the Union side; none killed in the Thirty-third.

During July and August were camped 20 miles south of He-
lena, and engaged in eight expeditions up and down the river.

September 1, was moved up the river to Sulphur Springs,
and thence to Pilot Knobb, where it arrived in the middle of the October, 1862.

November 15, was moved to Van Buren, Ark., in Colonel Har-
ris' Brigade, Brigadier General W.P. Benton's Division, of General Davidson's Corps. Made winter campaign in southeast Missouri, passing through Patterson, Van Buren, Alton, West Plains, Eminence and Centreville, and returned to Bellevue Valley, near Pilot Knob, about March 1,1863.

The Thirty-third was then ordered to Ste. Genevieve, Mo.,
where, with the command, it embarked for Milliken's Bend, La.
Attached to the First Brigade, First Division, Thirteenth Army Corps, it was engaged in all its battles, participating in the battles of Port Gibson, Cbampion Hills, Black River Bridge, assault and siege of Vicksburg, and the siege of Jackson.

April 28, in company with a large force, embarked and ran
down to Grand Gulf, where we watched next day the five-hours fight between the gun-boat fleet and the rebel batteries. The fleet having failed to silence the rebel guns, the troops marched across the bend to the river below, and the fleet ran past during the night, through a heavy fire, which however did but little injury even to the frail transport boats.

Next day, April 30, again embarked, ran down the river
some miles and landed on the Mississippi side. May 1, the
Regiment opened the fight on both the right and the left of the field; and the Thirteenth Corps mainly fought and won it. Four companies of the Thirty-third under Major Potter deployed as skirmishers on the left, developed the position of the enemy, and drew an artillery fire, holding the position until relieved by General Osterhans' Division.

Next morning, May 2, entered Port Gibson without further
resistance, found the suspension bridge across the bayou
burned; and the Thirty-third built, in four hours, a practicable floating bridge, over which the army marched.

On the 16th was fought the battle of Champion Hills.

The First Division was held in reserve until near the
close, but was in the advance is the pursuit, and pressed the enemy closely until dark, when it halted at Edwards' Station, and captured there a quantity of stores. Early in our advance, two men in Company C were killed by a stray or accidental shot.

At daybreak, May 17, were in motion, the Thirty-third
leading the advance and mostly deployed as skirmishers. Before 7 A.M., were engaged with the rebel works in front of the bridge and trestle at Black River. At about 10 A.M., a grand charge swept the enemy out of their works, capturing many hundreds of prisoners. Seventeen pieces of artillery were taken, fourteen of them being first seized by men of the Thirty-third Regiment. Company B was detailed to escort the captured cannon to Haines' Bluff.

May 19, first saw the fortifications at Vicksburg, moved
up through the valleys under their fire, and at one time had preliminary orders to join in Sherman's partial assault, but received no final order to charge. Details took part in the fighting as sharpshooters. May 20, Captain Norton was wounded by a "spent ball," and Captain Kellogg was killed.

May 22, joined in the grand assault. Three companies were
sent out as sharp-shooters, and Company B was on detached duty, leaving six companies to charge in line - probably not exceeding two hundred and fifty men. Seventy-five or six of these - nearly one third were hit, twelve being killed on the field and several mortally wounded. Reached the rebel works, tent were repulsed with the rest of the army; and at nightfall withdrew to a less exposed position, and began the six weeks' siege.

June 1, a careful compilation of losses since crossing the
river showed nineteen of the Regiment killed in action, and one hundred and two wounded, of whom ten had already died in hospital. Some additional loss was suffered during the rest of the siege. July 4 came the welcome surrender of the rebel stronghold and its garrison of over thirty thousand men.

Again no time was wasted in ceremony. July 5, marched
with the main army to Black River to oppose General Johnston; and by the 10th had pushed the enemy back to Jackson. On the night of the 16th the place was evacuated. After tearing up the railroad tracks for some miles, returned to Vicksburg July 24.

In August, moved to New Orleans with the Thirteenth Corps.
In October, with Brigade of Colonel Shunk, Eighth Indiana, Major General C. C. Washburne's Division, and Major General O. C. Ord's Corps, engaged in the campaign up the Bayon Teche. Returned to New Orleans in November. Thence ordered to Brownsville, Texas, but, before landing, was ordered to Aransas Pass.
Disembarked on St. Joseph Island, marched up St. Joseph Island and Matagorda Island to Saluria, participating in the capture of Fort Esperanza. Thence moved to Indianola and Port Lavaca.

The First Brigade, while on the main land of Texas, was
commanded by Brigadier General Fitz Henry Warren.

January 1, 1864, the Regiment re-enlisted as veterans, and
March 14 reached Bloomington, Illinois, and received veteran furlough.

April 18,1864, Regiment was reorganized at Camp Butler,
Illinois, and proceeded to New Orleans, via Alton and St. Louis - arriving 29th, and camping at Carrolton.

May 17, ordered to Brashear City, La. Soon after its ar-
rival the Regiment was scattered along the line of the road, as guard, as follows: company F, C and K, at Bayou Boeuf; Company
I, Bayou L'Ours; Company A and D, Tigerville; Company G, Chacahoula; Company E, Terre Bonne; Company B, Bayou Lafourche and Bayou des Allemands; Company H, Boutte. Regimental Headquarters, Terre Bonne. The District was called the "District of Lafourche," commanded by Brigadier General Robert A. Cameron, Headquarters at Thibodaux.

September 17, 1864, the non veterans of the Regiment were
started home, via New York City, in charge of rebel prisoners, and mustered out at Camp Butler, about October 11, 1864.

March 2,1865, ordered to join the Sixteenth Army Corps.
Near Boutte Station the train was thrown from the track, and nine men - five of A, three of D, and one of G - were killed; and no less than seventy two more were enumerated by name and description as more or less injured, many of them very severely, two or three of whom subsequently died in hospital, and others were discharged from service disabled. The heaviest loss in wounded fell upon Companies A and D - G, E and I coming next in number, and every company suffering more or less, except C and F, which were at the rear of the train.

On the 18th, Regiment embarked on Lake Pontchartrain, for
Mobile expedition. Company K, remaining behind to guard transportation, joined the Regiment April 11, at Blakely. Moved, via Fort Gaines and Navy Cove, and landed on Fish River, Ala., and marched with General Canby's army up east side of Mobile Bay. The Regiment was in the First Brigade, Colonel W. W. McMillan, Ninety-fifth Ohio; First Division, Brigadier General McArthur; Sixteenth Army Corps, Major General A. J. Smith.

March 27. arrived in front of Spanish Fort, the main de-
fense of Mobile, and, until its capture, April 8, was actively engaged. Loss, one killed, two died of wounds, and nine wounded.

After the surrender of Mobile, marched, April 13, 1865,
with the Sixteenth Corps, for Montgomery, Alabama, where it arrived on 25th, and encamped on the Alabama River. Here it received the news of Lee's and Johnson's surrender, after which its operations were not of a hostile character.

May 10, marched to Selma, and May 17 by rail, to Meridian,
Mississippi. Here remained. In the latter part of July the
Regiment was filled above the maximum, by men transferred from Seventy-second, One Hundred and Seventeenth, One Hundred and Twenty-second, and One Hundred and Twenty-fourth Illinois.

Moved to Vicksburg., April 14,1865, and remained at that
place until mustered out of service, November 24, 1865, and ordered to Camp Butler, Illinois, for final payment and discharge.

December 6, 1865, the enlisted men of the entire Regiment
received their final pay, and discharge from the military service, at the hands of Paymaster Maj. Carnahan. The commissioned officers were paid and discharged next day, December 7, 1865; and the Thirty-third Illinois Regiment ceased to exist. Its record of over four years of faithful service was finished.

From first to last, about nineteen hundred and twenty-four
names were borne on its muster rolls. The Regiment had three Colonels, six Lieutenant Colonels, and five Majors. Four companies had two Captains each; four had three each, one had four Captains, and one five. Only one of the original field and staff officers belonged to the Regiment at the final discharge - Surgeon Rex. Of the line officers, two only remained who had been officers at the outset - Captains Smith and Lyon - and they had been promoted from Lieutenants; all the other line officers had "risen from the ranks;" as had also the Major, Ad-
jutant and Quartermaster.

The surviving members of the Regiment at this date (1886)
are scattered far and wide engaged in various occupations, and with various fortunes. Many have held official stations in civil life. All but a very few have added to the merit of their military record that of an honorable and useful citizenship.

Several Regimental reunions have been held, and the last
printed roster shows the post office address of a little over five hundred survivors living in over twenty different States and Territories, one third of them having emigrated west of the Mississippi River.

Mrs. Elizabeth Abell, 91, dies at Taylorville
Taylorville, Jan. 3 - Mrs. Elizabeth Abell, 91, died at her home here at noon today. Mrs. Abell was born at Breckenridge, Jan. 13, 1841, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Preston Breckenridge. The town of Breckenridge, where she was born was named in honor of her father?s family. She was married to J. H. Abell March 27, 1862, at Springfield. Soon after their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Abell moved to Taylorville, where they spent the remainder of their lives. Mrs. Abell is survived by three children: Miss Ethel Abell of Taylorville, Arthur Abell of Assumption and Mrs. Emma Rishton of Spokane, Wash. Funeral services will be held at the Taylorville Christian church at 2 o?clock Tuesday afternoon. Rev. R. E. Hill will officiate. Interment will be made in Oak Hill cemetery, this city.

One Hundred and Fourteenth Infantry. - Col., James W.
Judy; Lieut.-Cols., John F. King, Samuel N. Shoup; Majs.,
Joseph M. McLane, John M. Johnson. This regiment was organized in the months of July and August and was mustered into the U.S. service at Camp Butler on Sept. 18, 1862. Cos. A and D were from Cass county, B, C, E, G, H and I from Sangamon county, and Cos. F and K from Menard county. The regiment left Camp Butler for Memphis, Tenn., Nov. 8, arrived on the 16th, and remained there about 10 days on picket duty. On May 2, 1863, it joined in the movement to the rear of Vicksburg; was engaged in the battle of Jackson, losing 5 men killed and wounded; arrived in the rear of Vicksburg on May 18 and participated in the siege, with a loss of 20 men in killed and wounded. On the surrender of Vicksburg the regiment was ordered to move against the Confederate Gen. Johnston, who retreated to Jackson Miss., and during the siege of that place the loss of the regiment in killed and wounded was 7 men. It was then ordered to Oak Ridge, Miss., and while doing picket duty there had several skirmishes with the guerrillas, 1 man being killed and 2 men captured while on duty. On Feb. 5, 1864, the regiment left on
a scout and engaged the enemy at Wyatt, Miss., thus enabling the cavalry to cross the Tallahatchie at New Albany. In June it went out again and engaged the enemy at Guntown, in which action it lost 205 in killed, wounded and missing out of 397 men. On July 13 the brigade to which the regiment was attached was surprised by the enemy near Harrisburg, Miss., but after a sharp engagement the Confederates were repulsed, the regiment receiving the thanks of the brigade commander on the field for the gallant and effective charge made by it. The regiment lost
40 men in killed and wounded. It was in the battle of Nash-
ville, made several charges during the engagement, and lost 15 men in killed and wounded. In March, 1865, it embarked for Spanish Fort, Ala., and was engaged during the siege of that place. The regiment was mustered out on Aug. 3, 1865.

They rest in an above ground vault which is unusual for this part of the country. It was Catharine's death which is believed to have caused the start of the plot.

One of the well known residents of Clinton township is Joseph Moler, who was born in Nicholas county, Kentucky, June 2, 1834. In 1853 he came to Indiana and has since made this state his place of abode. He is the son of John and Sarah (Colliver) Moler, the former born in Bourbon county, Kentucky, in the same vicinity as his son, Joseph. His parents were Pennsylvania Dutch who came to Kentucky about 1790, his father, Joseph Moler, having been a soldier in the Revolutionary war. In 1853 John Moler and family came to Putnam county, Indiana, locating in Clinton township on the land where Joseph Moler now resides. It was then only partly cleared and had a few rude buildings on it, and here the elder Moler lived, and died on November 3, 1866, at the age of sixty-one years, having been born November 30, 1805. His wife died in 1856, at the age of forty-seven years. She was born in Montgomery county, Indiana, in 1809. Only one of their children was born in Indiana those to reach maturity were: Marr, who married Russell Allen, of Greencastle, and died in that city in 1873 or 1874; Joseph, of this review; Richard H., a farmer in Parke county, Indiana: Jeff. T., who lives in Louisiana, Missouri; Susan E., who married R. D. Hamilton and died when in middle life; Levi, who went to Missouri, where he died; Jemima, the wife of Mr. Hannah and living in Missouri; Presley C., a bachelor and still living on the old homestead; Emma J., who married Caleb Bratton, of Boone county, Indiana.
Joseph Moler was nineteen years old when he came to Indiana. He remained at home until he was twenty-five pears old, assisting in clearing the place. On November 1, 1859, he married Lucy P. Newgent, he being twenty-five and she eighteen; they had lived on adjoining farms for some time. A sketch of her father, Edward Newgent, appears elsewhere in this volume. After their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Moler spent two years in Pulaski county, Indiana, then moved back to Putnam county on the farm of Mr. Moler's father, taking charge of part of it. In 1868 he rented and took charge of the entire farm of two hundred and forty acres. Later he bought the interests of others in the home place, owning eighty acres. He has made extensive improvements on his place, building a fine home in 1891, and he has good barns and devotes considerable time to stock raising, making grains also a specialty, feeding what grain the place produces. He has laid two hundred and fifty rods of tile. He is very successful as a general farmer. Mr. Moler is an independent thinker and keeps well posted on political and current events. He is no partisan and always votes for the men whom he deems to be the best qualified for the offices sought.
Three children have been born to Mr. and Mrs. Moler, one of whom died when ten years of age. Levi Shelby Moler is a farmer in Clinton township, he was candidate for nomination as county clerk in 1910. Stella May married J. S. Brown, a farmer of Woonsocket, South Dakota.
On November 1, 1909, was celebrated Mr. and Mrs. Moler's fiftieth wedding anniversary, which was quite an event in the Moler family and greatly enjoyed by all who were fortunate enough to be present. The only anniversary guest who was also present at their marriage was John Newgent, cousin of Mrs. Moler, he having enjoyed the celebration after a half century lapse from the nuptial day almost as much as the elder1y couple themselves. Rev. Joseph Skeeters, now deceased, performed the marriage ceremony.
Fraternally Mr. Moler is a Mason and he takes a great interest in Masonry, endeavoring to live up to its wholesome teachings in his every day life.

Note: Levi Moler dealer in stock, was born in Nicholas County, Kentucky February 6, 1845, and was the son of John Moler, a Kentuckian by birth and a farmer by occupation. Levi accompanied his parents to Putnam County Indiana, when but 8 years old and there he remained for 16 years. He received a somewhat limited education, though for a year he attended Waverland College, which he entered in 1868. In 1869, he came to Bates County, Missouri, and here commenced his business career. He owns 320 acres of good land, located on sections 5 and 1. During the years 1876-7 Mr. Moler was judge of the county court, and he was elected to the 13th general Assembly of the state legislature, receiving 1056 votes to 912 over Wiley Crows, greenbacker, and eleven to W.M.Taggart. Politically he is a Democrat. He is connected with the Kansas Missouri Coal and Land Company and is a man highly respected in this vicinity by all who know him. He belongs to the AF and AM order and is master of Lodge No. 140, at Papinville. He is unmarried and for 10 years his household affairs have been managed by his widowed sister, Mrs. Burnside." 1

Lorenzo Moler enlisted in the service of the United States at Madison, in the State of Indiana on the 7th day of December 1863, as a private in Company K commanded by Captain Litson in the 22nd Regiment of Indiana Inft. Vols. in the war of 1861; was wounded on 17th of March 1865, died on 21st 1865 who while in the service aforesaid, and in the line of his duty was killed in the Battle of Bentonsville by a musket ball to the head while in the line of duty at Bentonsville in the State of North Carolina on the 21st day of March A.D., 1865.
