PETITION BY THE ENGLISH INHABITANTS OF THE NATCHEZ AREA IN 1779
    TO THE BRITISH

    Sir
    Natches January 17. 1779
    TO HIS EXCELLENCY GOVERNOR CHESTER

We, His Majesty's Dutiful and Loyal Subjects, Inhabitants of the Natches, beg leave to acknowledge our sincere and hearty thanks for your Excellency's great care and attention to this District and the various measures from time to time adopted for the Defense thereof by which means our Enemies are, and have been, much awed by this part of the Country protected and defended and our property safely preserved and kept from such fate as hath been often devised and decreed against it. Permit us to assure your Excellency that our weak endeavors were ever exerted, never failing to assemble on all occasions when called upon by Colonel Hutchins, who on alarms hath often required our attendance, and the same Loyal Principles we hope will ever govern us to act with spirit in the future on such emergencies. You also have our thanks for appointing him to preside here, who is more likely than any other person yet offered to defend this District, to be useful in other respects and to yield a general satisfaction to our most virtuous inhabitants.

We do also most heartily thank the Honorable Colonel John Stuart, ESQ.. for the aid of his Loyal Refugees under Captain Jackson's command who have been very useful to us. And also for the Company under the command of Captain William Mcintosh,
lately arrived, and hope they will be of no less service. And as it is reported by Captain Mcintosh and William Bethune that Indians are to be sent here, we do most ardently beg and request that no such may ever appear amongst us under the name of a
defense, as most of us are too well acquainted with the Indians to put the least confidence in them. And as we conceive that would be as useless and burdensome at this time as those heretofore sent to the District. What more, therfore, can we expect of
them now than at that time can they answer any other purpose than to Destroy the province that ought to support and sustain this Post, and to keep us in bodily fear.

The Indians formerly sent here was a reason why many People and families left their Habitations. But another such visit forced upon us, we fear, will add to an unhappiness and too, probably to the Country's desolation. And we, a Loyal people, why then shall we be forced to leave our settlement and fly to a Despotick Dominion.

We are informed of a report in Pensacola, that the Inhabitants of this District whose cattle have been slaughtered for the support of the Troops and the Indians, were contented with the price of five dollars per hundred, which report we declare to be exceeding wrong and that we have always thought, and yet think it ought not to be less than six Dollars and a Quarter and hope that price will be made good to those Injured people whose Beeves have converted to the King's use at an under rate.

We beg leave to wish Your Excellency the Compliments of the season, with perfect health, length of days, long to preside and your Administration happy under the auspicious reign of our rightful Sovereign, inthroned on a Glorious Constitution; is the prayer of.

Sir Your most Devoted and Obedient Humble Servants:

    Research Notes:
Was William "Guillermo" Hayes, really the son of the Chester County William Hayes?
Gleaning from Internet, some say William of Chester had a son born 8-8-1733 but I found no sources for this birth. William of Chester had a will written in 1770s, executed in 1780s, and named some if not all children and grandchildren of deceased children. It did not mention a William. William of Chester had been in Chester as early as 1707 or 1710 when his father moved there. The family were Quakers. He briefly lived in Delaware, (east of Chester Co) in 1764 but returned to Chester Co.

William "Guillermo" records (source?) say he was born "about 1730," a native of Halifax and a Presbyterian. Halifax, Dauphin County, is about 85 miles to the west of Chester County. That is the only reference to William "Guillermo" being in Halifax. He is next found in Fairfax County, Virginia when he married in 1753 and then witnessed the will of his wife's stepmother in 1754.

If nothing else, William "Guillermo" is "by tradition" son of William of Chester, but I can find no proof. However, there is no proof he's not. What is the source that he was a native of Halifax? Could have just lived in Halifax before going to Fairfax. If he is indeed son of William of Chester, he could have set out to Halifax as a young man and then went south to Fairfax by the time he was either 20 or 23. Probably not uncommon for men to set out on their own at 18 or 19 years old. He was Presbyterian. Did he simply convert from being raised a Quaker? If so, was he estranged from his family and that's why he left and was omitted from the will? Was it because he was too far away by the time of his father's will? By that time he had moved from Fairfax further south and was established in Natchez before moving to Louisiana.

" To the Honorable Judge of the parish of St. Landry, in the Territory of Orleans. The petition of George Forman Humbly showeth that on the twenty third day of Sept. 1807, William Hays of this parish in the presence of John Adam did
maliciously injure your petitioner and endeavor to deprive your petitioner of that good reputation he has always supported__ by saying that your petitioner has kild a Spanyard at the Natchez and that your petitioner had stolen hogs__to the damage of your petitioner___Five thousand dollars--Your petitioner knowing himself Clear of these Charges and having always supported the reputation of an honest citizen--and being charged with a family of children and not wishing to say under such an appolation--as it might in future be cast up to his offsprings--your petitioner prays your Honour to have the said William Hays to appear before your Honour on the Second Monday in Oct. next, to prove the charges exhibited against your petitioner, and your petitioner will win pray____"
    signed George Forman
By Stephen Forman: I have a copy of the handwritten petition, purchased at Opelousas Court house.

Hayes, John of this parish; Presbytherian (William & Sarah Bosman) m Monday 18 May 1795 Anne Clark of Virginia (Francis Clark & Rachel Melon). She was baptized the same day, her godparents are: Augustin Andrus & Lucie Andrus. Marriage Wits: Joseph Modena, James Andrus, Peter O'Conner, Anne Clary. Fr. Pedro de Zamora (Opel Ch v 1-A, p 55)

This family can be found in WFT Vol. 5, #1179
(SWLA Records, Hebert Vol 1 pp 129, 273)
John, with his parents and their other children, came to the area of LA that later became Acadia Parish. The family was settled in this area by 1784.
It is not clear whether Anna's parents were ever in LA, however records show that she and her brothers and sisters were here by 1790 and possibly earlier. (Hebert: SWLA Records v 1 pp 129-132)
John was a Presbyterian and Anna was Lutheran. They were both married by a Catholic priest in Opelousas, LA on May 18, 1795. They were both baptized Catholic the day they were married, renouncing their ties with Protestantism. One can oness whether they remained in the Catholic Church. Bapt. records for their children cannot be found in the area churches except for their son Thomas who was bapt. in Grand Coteau, La. (Cath. Ch) at the age of 16.
John owned a 400 acre riverbank strip of land on Bayou Plaquemine Brulee. (Fontenot: History of Acadia Parish Vol 1 p 21, 39)
Anna died before John. Their community property was auctioned on Oct 30, 1821. The total amount realized from the sale was $876.00.

Ms. Sharp: I hadn't checked on the St Landry Parish USGEN Web page in awhile. I was taken aback when I saw your query on the BOSMAN, FOREMAN & HAYES families. Lucy Hayes (1793?--????) was my g3grandmother! William Hayes and Sarah Bosman are my g5grandparents. I have some information on
their family and those they married into. I also have contacts who have lots of Hayes info. I have recently been e-mailing a descendant of Moses Johnson and Nancy Roberts (Robards?).
Lucy Hayes married James D Reeves, parents of Isaac Reeves, who had Joseph Levingston Reeves, whose son Seth was my grandfather.
I am not much of a genealogist--I don't have the time! A retired cousin researched the Reeves and collateral families and basically handed her results to me. The Hayes, Bosman, & Forman families are very well documented. You have probably gotten many responses to your query. I can get
most of the info you need if you don't already have it. Have you "talked " to Lois Hayes Culver or read a copy of Cole's Footprints?
    Looking forward to your reply.......

    Died:
Bosman was shot down by jayhawkers or renegade troops while defending his home during the Civil War.

"Raids of farmhouses were occurring in broad daylight and people were shot if they tried to defend their property. Bosman Hayes and Napoleon Franchbois were murdered and Charles Derosier, Sylvain Sonnier and Joseph B. Young had their homes burned."

On the Banks of Plaquemine Brulee, by Gene Thibodeaux, Churchpoint, LA. (c) 1999, p. 51.

One of the largest landowners in the neighborhood was Bosman Hayes Jr., who was killed by outlaws in 1864. According to family tradition, Bosman Hayes Jr. owned a white mare which he would let nobody else ride. One night he heard a disturbance at the stable where the mare was kept. He got his shotgun and went to investigate. The night was clear and moonlit after a rainy day. Clothes had been left on a clothesline to dry. He saw two men leading his mare away. Hayes shot one of the men. The other was hidden by a bed sheet on a line. He shot Hayes and killed him on his own back porch.

So, Joseph bought back the mortgaged property for less than its value (using the mortgage credit as cash), and Solomon had lost his home and likely al, or most of his property. Solomon died 2 years later, at age 28.

Did Joseph allow his son and his family of wife Louise Tauriac and their four children to remain on the property, or did he make them leave? What had happened to Solomon's wealth between 1817 and 1823?

When his mother, Marie Hayes, died in 1812, Solomon (still a minor) received the following inheritance from his mother's estate:

S ixth: Was received by Solomon Andrus a Negro boy named Robert at

five hundred & fifty dollars 550.00

In moveables the sum of one hundred and ninety dollars 190.00

The above being the articles collated Amount brought forward $740.00

A tract of land situated in the aforesaid Parish of Saint Landry and lying in the

Prairie of the Church, adjoining on the North side to the land of Joseph Gradnigo

and on the South to Joseph Andrus, containing eight hundred arpens at

    two thousand dollars 2000.00

An undivided half of a tract ofland situated on the West side of the Bayou Marais

Croquant, bounded by land formerly belonging to Luke Collins, Ellis & Donato

Bello., and commonly known as the Cypress swamp tract, containing six hundred

& twenty-five American arpens at nine hundred and forty-six dollars & fifty cents 946.50

A Negro woman called Yellow Fanny aged about forty years with her child,

a boy named Morrison about six months old at seven hundred dollars 700.00

A Negro boy named Lewis aged about ten years at four hundred dollars 400.00

    Amount brought forward $4880.00

A Negro boy named Tom aged about eight years at four hundred fifty dollars 450.00

A Negro boy named Isaac aged about six years at three hundred and fifty dollars 350.00

A Negro girl named Juliann aged about three years at two hundred dollars 200.00

    $5886.50

The Sum returned in Cash 62.85

Complete share of Solomon Andrus $5825.65

So, at age 13, he had the equivalent in 2007 dollars of $102,200 at his dispersal. He married Louise Aurore Tauriac about 1820, and she probably brought some property and cash into the marriage. Yet, by 1823, he has only a portion of the first tract of land, and only 2 slaves, when he originally had six. He owed his father, Joseph a debt of $3500.00, which in 2007 dollars would equal $61,400.00, or 2/3 of his total wealth, if he had any left at that point.

One scenario might be that Solomon owed a gambling debt, or made some bad investments, and Joseph seized the property to keep it from being further mortgaged to other creditors, thereby saving the property for Solomon and his family. The size of the $3500 debt, and the loss of over $102,000.00 in just a few years is mind boggling. Obviously Solomon had serious financial concerns, and perhaps his family was trying to save him before it was too late.

At the time of his death in 1828, Solomon's estate was only worth $29.00, consisting of a barrel of some type of goods, a bed, and a lot of pots. This young man (and his family) had been reduced to paupers. It appears the family remained involved after his death, as there was a family council and tutorship proceedings filed for the supervision of the minor children.

Also, Solomon's children were to inherit their deceased father's share when their grandfather Joseph died. Joseph died in 1834, but his estate was not settled for 10 years. By that time, Solomon's children were young adults.

Suggestion that he was b after children bt on 4 Jun 1797, Susanne, Amelia, Wm & Jacob. Jacob last of those 4 b 1794. However if b aft 1797 - we have Catherine b 1797 - would have to be after her making him too young to have his first child Amelia b 1813.

His wife Marie Johnson b 1796 (confirmed as bt at 7 y-o in 1803. making her 17 to have first child - marrying at age 16. I can't see him younger than that.

It's reasonable that a 12 y-o would not be bt with younger siblings. They were "grown up" quite young and he any number of reasons why not with the others. But granted, I need to study the 1810 census. If b 1785, in 1810 would be 25 and gone.

    followup - his age group:
    1810 b.d. 1795-1800 10 to 15
    1820 b.d. 1776-1794 26-44
    1830 b.d. 1781-1790 40-49

we had recaluclated him to be 1795 to accomodate 1810.
1820 fits, almost - by one year - or a few months
her b.d. is definite, and she was not categorized correctly
1830, by then maybe he guessed and could easily be off 5 yrs. Conclusion: 1795 is reasonable.

HAYES: TOWN FIRST KNOWN AS DUGAS PASTURE
In the beginning Hayes was known as DUGAS PASTURE, or La Savanne des Duga s. It was named for Dugas, a cattle grazer from Andrus Cove, who discover ed this bountiful pasture land ideal for grazing his wild cattle. They cou ld be kept here without supervision because the area was bounded on the ea st by the Lacassine Bayou, on the north and west by swamp, and on the sou th by marsh.

Eloi Primeaux of Hayes, who?s done extensive research on this area says, t here is no recorded history on the Dugas family, except that they were Aca dians, migrating to Louisiana in about 1755, and settling at AndrusCove, t wo miles northeast of Lake Arthur. They had large herds of cattle.

Dugas did not want settlers to come into this area because they?d ruin h is good cattle and his pastureland. He managed to keep them off, until Tho mas Hayes came along. It is believed that Dugas may have died about that t ime.

Thomas Hayes? ancestor - William Hayes - came to Louisiana some times befo re 1784 from Halifax , PA, and settled in St. Landry parish. In 1832 Thom as Hayes moved into Dugas Pasture to become the first white settler ther e. He married Mary Ann Foreman, from Andrus Cove, and they settled near t he Lacassine Bayou.

Hayes' great-great granddaughter, Mrs. Tom Taylor of Lake Charles tel ls of a near tragedy the Hayes suffered shortly after moving to Dugas Past ure. "Thomas Hayes was gravely ill with typhoid fever. There were no neigh bors, and no doctors. Their child -Paren - was just a toddler.

"Mrs. Hayes knew she had to leave to get help for her critically ill husba nd, so she tied the young toddler to the bedstead, put out plenty of fo od and water for him, and left. Crossing the Lacassine Bayou in a pirogu e, she then used a horse to travel about tifteen miles through the isolate d, unsettled territory to the Andrus Cove Ferry on the Mermentau. James An drus took her to his home by flatboat. Then he got William Holland To ri de to Crowley To find a doctor .

Two days later the group got back to the Hayes home where they found Thom as Hayes still alive and recuperating from his battle with typhoid. The yo ung child - Paren - who'd been tied to the bedstead, was dirty, and crust y, and upset. But he was physically alright.
