"In 1880 - well, I have read that some census takers took notes and then went home and copied the notes onto the census form. Some even had their wife or children copy the notes to the form.

It looks like someone was copying to this page and after copying Cunniff Josephine W F 6 daughter, they looked back at the notes - dropping to the birth place for Sophia Blumenthal and her parents - giving that birth place to Josephine and leaving Sophia out. Does that make any sense? (Louis was probably dead.)"

Note: Louis was listed in a Galveston city directory with one of his sons in 1880. Were they separated? Was the directory published after he died, and she was a widow by the time of the census? Is this surmised error on the part of the census taker what happened, or was Sophia someplace else and the kids were with Henry and Ellen for some reason? They are not Henry's natural children. Could he have had a brief marriage with Sophia and they were his steps? Sophia later is in New York with her children and going by the name Blumenthal. There was a Sophie Belke through the city directories shown as a widow to interchangeably Henry or Frederick Belke - this Sophie? As it turns out, there is a Sophie Balke whose death record in Galveston County is consistent with her being the widow of Henry's father, Frederick - probably named Frederick Henry, which seems much more likely than Sophia Blumenthal being that widow. Neverthless, since it is confusing in the census, and there's no absolutes, the children will remain attached to Henry, but they are not his children.
