Published in 1925/26, it is a valuable reference for early East Texas researchers. The index has the actual page numbers where the reference is found to make citations more precise.

"G. W. Hargraves, who was captain of a little Beaumont company of militia in August, 1835, had sixty-two men under him, twenty of whom took part in the battle of the Alamo. He also was at the head of twenty-one volunteers who started to join ston to stop the advance of Santa Anna, but the battle of San Jacinto was fought before they reached that place, and they were ordered to rout some hostile Indians north of the town. Lived with John Sparks right after marriage (1850 Census - census date 24 Oct; marriage date, Oct 15), but must not have stayed there very long. They are also listed in 1850 living with James Eaves, a laborer, and his wife Eliza (ages 37), with the Eaves' children, Rachel, 8; Lazil, 5; and Joseph, 2, all from Louisiana except Joseph who was born in Texas. Julia was only 14. Listed as a farmer.

The marriage of James Courts, son of Thomas and Ann Johnson Court, and Julia Ann Sparks, 13 year old daughter of John Sidney and Melinda Jones Sparks, brought together two of the founding families of lower East Texas. Thomas and Ann, with James as a baby, came to Sabine Pass about 1829/30. The historical marker in Sabine Pass Lion's Club Parks states that our Court Family and another family named McGaffey were here "as early" as 1832. Not only were they in Texas before it became a state, they were here during the time that it was part of Mexico, and in 1836, when it became a Republic in its own right. Our family can truly say we are mutli-generation Texans.

The Sparks arrived in Texas, traveling by covered wagon from Tennessee, in 1838, when Julia Ann was just two. They settled on Pavel's Island first, then came ashore at Sabine Lake and became the first permanent anglo inhabitants of what was called "Aurora", and which eventually became Port Arthur.

The Pioneer Spirit prevailed as both families withstood early life on the Gulf Coast. Yellow Fever, mosquitos, hurricanes and tropical storms, alligators and other wild creatues combined to make life harrowing and an adventure at the same time. Some of those stories will be included in other history items.

James and Julia began their married life in Aurora, and eventually built their own cabin. Julia's brothers, sisters, and some cousins married and remained in the area of Aurora. James' siblings stayed in the area of Sabine Pass and Port Arthur as well, although several moved away after they reached adulthood.

James and Julia had 13 children, most of who have descendents still living here in the Golden Triangle. We have located descendents of the other children as well.

James and Julia are featured in the Museum of the Gulf Coast in the section on "Aurora." Pictures of both of them and several other family members (Sparks) are on display.

James "Jim" was one of the first Pony Express Riders in Texas. He carried mail from Sabine Pass to Harrisburg (Houston), Texas. He was also a farmer and cattleman. During the Texas Battle for Independence in 1836, James was on the muster Roll for Jefferson Co. George Hargraves organized the company. They were known as "Capt. Chessire's Company Volunteers." (Jefferson Co Historical Commission Veterans, Pt 1). The Book "Pioneer Remimscences of Jefferson County" by T.J. Russell, p 34, states in Sabine Pass "Thomas Courts and son, James Courts, were there with John McGaffey at an early day. Both are dead. Several children of James Courts are now in this county."

From Frank Courts: I also checked the article on the removal of graves from the private cemetery where Dupont is now located on Port Arthur Road in the 60's. It states that James M. And Julia were both found there and moved to Forest Lawn. It also lists the other graves, 22 in all, including a James F. (as you stated) and a James C. Court as being moved from there. I dont know why your list is different. I have been to Forest Lawn and have seen the moved graves. The remains were grouped under four headstones which say "T. F. Smith Homestead Tract Cemetery" or something similar. Forest Lawn does have the names listed, and Carroll Wallace funeral home has other records of the move, which they coordinated. T. F. Smith was somehow connected with the Sparks, I believe.

Sherry I've written the above just as Mr. Johnson wrote it to me. Hope it's not to confusing. Artemeas/Artimese and Susan were sisters of Pierre but I don't find Denise. Could she have been born later?

I know that my GGF Pierre Frugia (Fruge) married a second time and had a son Lyman Frugia and a dgt. named Goldie. Lyman Frugia, Jr. and his wife Doris Ann live in Vidor and I've written to her twice sending her my data in hopes she would share but she hasn't.

From marriage books for Jefferson County I have Pier Fruge m. Julia Courta 14 Jul 1897 and Pierre Fruge m. Mrs. Lidia Cuniff 31 Aug 1891. I know that my GGF Pierre called his son Pierre "Peter" but I have nothing else. So I don't know who married whom.

You can say I'm still a novice when it comes to genealogy but I'm learning. Do you know if copies of Successions from LA can be ordered by mail? I found several Fruge's listed in Imperial Calcasieu and St. Landry Parish. Also listed were some Hayes. There is a book written by Shirley Burwell of Lake Charles I presume listing all the successions.

Any tips or suggestions are most welcome. Keep in touch.

Others of the family were the following: his grandfather Francis M. Smith, his uncle Francis M. Smith, his great-grandfather Thomas Court, his great-uncle JOHN COURT, his uncle Fred Court, and his cousin Leslie Earl Simpson.

Most all these folks were fishermen or watermen of some sort & NONE of them knew how to swim! That's always bogled my mind! Actually I don't know that for sure abt all of them, but I do know the latter ones to drown did not know how to swim.

So who is Fred Court? This confirms John as a s/o Thomas also. Leslie was my Granny's little brother, he was only 16.

Mrs. Kate Dorman ran the Catfish Hotel, which she quickly turned into a hospital. She, Sarah Vosburg, and Sarah Ann [Court] King nursed the victims, but with no medical knowledge or medicines with which to help the sick, the nursing staff could do little else except try to cool the fever until the patient either died or recovered.

Tragedy struck Sabine Pass in July, 1862, when Jefferson County's worst epidemic, the dreaded "yellow jack" {yellow fever}, was imported aboard a blockade-runner. In a four-month period, the disease killed 100 residents at Sabine and Beaumont and afflicted at least 200 more. The luckier ones, about 90% of Sabine's inhabitants, fled at the first outbreak, some carrying the disease with them. About forty Confederate soldiers also died of the disease. Only about 30 men of two military companies escaped the malady, and their "principal business was to bury the dead."7

When the hotel tenants and the town's populace fled, Kate turned the Catfish Hotel into a temporary hospital, for there was then no Confederate medical facility in the city. Mrs. Dorman and two friends, Sarah Vosburg and Sarah Ann King, were among the Sabine women who remained to nurse the victims, and all three were fortunate to escape death. Actually, Vosburg, who was the first person to recognize the symtoms of the disease, had survived yellow fever at New Orleans, and as a result was immune to it.

The Confederate Veterans from Texas: He was in the 11th (Spaight's) Battalion Volunteers Company A. This company trained and camped at Spindletop Oil Field in the early part of the Civil War.

In 1880 San Saba Census (p 438), he indicates that both parents were born in England.
(Precinct 9; June 4, 1880) Received Confederate pension.


Martin Clifton Court told stories to his grandsons about his father, Thomas Jefferson Court, using an alias and hiding out from the law for a period of time. Thomas has been found on the 1880 Census in San Saba County, Texas. I thought the following excerpt about the history of that county was interesting.

"During the 1880s lawlessness became a problem, and the county experienced a period of "mob rule." In response, citizens formed an anti-mob organization. However, factions developed within the organization, and by 1896 the competing groups wee conducting what amounted to open warfare. After a number of men were killed, the Texas Rangers were dispatched to the area, and order was eventually restored."

C.S.A. Information:
3 Aug 1915 - 15 Jun 1917 , Hesse, Comanche County, Texas

Thomas J. served in the military Civil War, 1 Oct 1861 to 27 Mar 1865 in Texas. The records show that T. J. Court, private, Company A, 11th (Spaight's) Battalion Texas Volunteers, C.S.A. enlisted October 1, 1861. The battallion, except Company B, became a part of 212st (Spaight's) Texas Infantry, C.S.A. There were no rolls on file per the regiment. His name is listed on the archive muster roll.

Per Sarah's application he was in the Captain Marshes Company

Seth Davis, living in the County of Dallas wrote: I was in Company A, Marshes Cavalry and served with Tom Courts in that Company. He made a good soldier and served until the close of the war. I am not personally acquainted with Mrs. Courts.

Sarah applied for his pension on 3 Aug 1915 and received it from1 Dec 1915 until her death in March of 1917. Sarah was living in Hesse, Texas, Comanche County at the time of the request and her death.

Mary "Mollie", Tom and Sarah's youngest daughter, wrote a letter to the War Department asking that the last pension check be returned to her because it was needed to pay for "sickness and burial expenses". She said the post office returned it before she had an opportunity to collect it. She was denied.

"Terrific pictures, Pat!! But this couple doesn't look like the other picture of Paul and Sarah. Unless you have something to date this, it looks like maybe closer to the turn of the century, maybe a little after, which would make the young couple maybe one of Paul & Sarah's kids - in their 20s. Looks like the kids are about 1 1/2 (boy?), 3 (girl?), 5 (girl) -- maybe lady on the right is Sarah and the young man is one of the sons. The lady looks a little darker complexion than the other picture. I don't have all of Paul Phelan's children's families. So, would that family outline fit any of them?"

Henry Clifton "Cliff" was a cowboy as a young man. He was a Pony Express rider. He carried the mail between Sabine Pass and Harrisburg Houston), Texas. Most of his life was spent in the lumber industry with Reliance Lumber, Chris Grey L, and Kirby Lumber Co. He was a good friend of John Henry Kirby, the lumber tycoon. He named his oldest son Charles Kirby after him. Cliff was upset for the rest of his life because the Government had all the long leaf yellow pine trees cut down during the first World War. They were to be used to build wooden ships for the troops going to France. The ships were never built, but it spelled the end of the great lumber boom in ast and Southeast Texas. All of his sons worked in the timber industry at this time. Coley told me the Neches River was full of square timber all the way back to East Texas at this time.
Cliff had six children in a previous marriage. The family died of yellow fever in the epidemic of the 1880s. My father Coley said, his father would never talk about his first family.
The first record of Cliff on the census is 1880 in Jefferson Co, Texas. I believe, according to family history, that all the Courts lived in the Sabine Pass area. A masssive hurricane in the 1880s completely flooded this area. All of thes and kids were floated out of this area on feather matresses. The families ended up in the Nederland-Port Neches area. Cliff and his family eventually settled in the Beaumont area before the turn of the century. Many members of the Courts family still live in the Port Neches area.

Had a train accident and hurt his leg - it was operated on and caused it to be shorter, so he had to wear a platform shoe to equal the lengh of the leg.
He almost died when this happened. Grandma was married (alive) when this happened. Story is told that he was so afraid they would amputate his leg, he refused anasethetic.

had a dream of the fork in the road and someone was in room with him. He took one, and the patient who was sharing room died.

Funeral Set for S. H. Courts, 92, Oldest Native Here

Samuel Helmer Courts, at 92 the oldest native inhabitant of Port Arthur, died unexpectedly Monday at 3 p.m. in the home of a son, C. C. Courts, 1825 Seventh street.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. at the Grammier-Oberle Funeral home. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park.1

Born Here 1862

Mr. Courts was born on March 15, 1862--about the time of the Battle of Sabine Pass2--when Port Arthur was a small community called Aurora.
His mother was the daughter of Julia Ann Sparks3, whose parents, John and Melinda Sparks, established the first community here in the early 1850s. Then, the community was known as Sparks. Sparks--or Aurora, as it was soon to be called--consed mainly of homesteads erected in the vicinity of the present DeQueen Boulevard and Lakeshore Drive, with the farms facing Lake Sabine.

Courts Home Added

When Julia Ann Sparks was married to Jim Courts, an Englishman4, about 1860, another home was added to the settlement. It was in this home that Samuel Courts was born.
When he was 21 years old, Sam Courts began operating pony-back mail service between Sabine and Beaumont, a job he held for 11 years. Disease and the infirmaties of age began to take their normal toll among the residents of Aurora, most of whoere the children and grandchildren of John and Melinda Sparks. The settlers began to drift off as the hardships of the War Between the States came to them.
In 1894, when he was 32, Sam Courts moved to Beaumont, where he married Miss Claudia Gantz and became a building contractor. He remained in Beaumont until retirement about 28 years ago. His wife died in Beaumont in 1927.5

Built Beaumont Homes

Mr. Courts built many of the old homes on Calder Avenue in Beaumont and also assisted in construction of the Woolworth Building there.
He is survived by five daughters, Mrs. Wiley Choate and Mrs. Earl D. Mudd, both of Groves; Mrs. Joe N. Runnels of Port Arthur, Mrs. O. K. Jones and Mrs. J.J. Douglas, both of Beaumont; two sons, H. O. Courts of Beaumont and C. C. Courts of t Arthur; 16 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
Mr. Courts, a member of the Methodist church, took an active part in the Centennial celebration here in 1948, although in the background, for he shunned publicity.
Mr. Courts was perhaps the best authority of the early history of Lower Jefferson county.
The Rev. Edmund Lacy, a ministerial student at the Southwestern Baptist seminary, at Fort Worth, will officiate at the rites Wednesday.

Buried:
Helmer was buried beside his son-in-law Frank Lowe. Frank had been married to Helmer's daughter, Gladys. When Frank was buried in 1949, apparently Gladys bought a double headstone. But she remarried, and by the time Helmer died in 1954, she chose to give her burial spot beside Frank to her father. Unfortunately, the headstone was never engraved for Helmer.

Viola was the daughter of James Madison Court and Julia Sparks Court. She was born at Sparks Settlement, Aurora, Texas, on the site of the present-day city of Port Arthur. Later the residents of the settlement moved to a site near the city of Beaumont. Viola was married first to Leroy E. Nobles in 1894, and after his death became the second wife of William Milam Sparks on December 4, 1897. She died in childbirth in Clemville, Matagorda County, Texas. Her body was brought to Houston by wagon and then sent back to Beaumont by train for burial in the MacFaddin Cemetery on the family homestead. All the graves in the cemetery were exhumed in 1961 to make room for a chemical plant and the bodies were re-buried at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Beaumont.

"Captain Johnson of Bolivar peninsula, who last Saturday, together with Mr. R.H. Slaughter and others oganized a relief committee at the above place for the Sabine sufferers sailed over to Galveston yesterday morning.....
We visited all the surrounding country and part of the pass, and found that the damage and destruction were greater in the country than in the city proper. The first house we came to was Mr. Brad Johnson's place. There was hardly anything left of it to tell the tale. The fences had disappeared completely and all the trees and crops were totally annialated. Brad Johnson was raised at the Pass and is about forty-five years old, and stated that the Sabine blow was the severest hurricane he had ever witnessed. Moise Broussard's house was situated just next to Brad Johnson's and had also suffered more or less. A tank which had been scraped out for stock watering purposes was discovered here with the only fresh water left at Sabine Pass. Out of a total of eleven hundred cattle, owned by Mr. Broussard, which were pasturing at the time of the storm five or six miles this side of the Pass, not one animal escaped he waters. The search for dead bodies is still progressing. A young lady was fished from the jetty works on Saturday who was supposed to be Miss Annie McCall, although the body was not positively identified as such. The body of Homer King still remains undiscovered. "

Martin Clifton Court told stories to his grandsons about his father, Thomas Jefferson Court, using an alias and hiding out from the law for a period of time. Thomas has been found on the 1880 Census in San Saba County, Texas. I thought the following excerpt about the history of that county was interesting.

"During the 1880s lawlessness became a problem, and the county experienced a period of "mob rule." In response, citizens formed an anti-mob organization. However, factions developed within the organization, and by 1896 the competing groups wee conducting what amounted to open warfare. After a number of men were killed, the Texas Rangersqv were dispatched to the area, and order was eventually restored."

Thomas K. Court, about 57, of Houston, a former resident of Port Arthur, died today at 7:00 a.m. in Houston after an illness of one week. A seaman, Mr. Court was employed by the Sabine Towing company during his seventy-year residence here. The body is to be brought to Port Arthur today and funeral arrangements will be announced by Grammier's Funderal home.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Bonnie C. Court of Houston; four brothers, Emerson Court of Port Arthur, Roy Court of Rockport, Texas, Robert Court of Galveston and Kenneth Court of Houston; two sisters, Mrs. Alberta Nugent and Mrs. Vern Kurtz, both of Houston; 10 nephews and 11 nieces.

"Cliff had six children in a previous marriage. The family died of yellow fever in the epidemic of the 1880s. My father Coley said, his father would never talk about his first family."

Jun 12 1880 he is shown in (Port Arthur) Aurora with wife Fannie and Ella M. age 3, living one residence away from James & Julia. Record of his marriage to Fannie was 31 Dec 1874. The other children had to have been born between likely after 1878/9 and bef about 1890. It would take about 10 years to have 5 more children; so the deaths must have been about 1890-91.

Kirby was named for John Henry Kirby, the lumber tycoon, his father's friend. He was a World War I Veteran with General Pershing in France. Kirby inhaled mustard gas in France during the fighting of 118. The Army doctors told him if he were to catch a cold, it would kill him. Kirby died from pneumonia in 1932. His brother James named two of his sons after him, James Kirby and Charles Edward. My dad, Coley, told me that as sick as Kirby was, upon returning to New York from France - the Army gave them a 20-dollar gold piece, an oil skin slicker, and "your country thanks you" - he walked and hitched rides to Beaumont, Texas (almost two months to get home.)

Henry's nickname was "Slick." He was called Harry by all the family members. During his younger life, Harry worked for the timber industry. He was a timber estimator for Reliance Lumber Company. This job gave Harry a deferrment during Woar I. Uncle Harry was a butcher in later years and also ran a barbecue business. The barbecue stand was part of the Dickerson Drive-in on College Street in Beaumont, Texas.
Harry was an avid baseball fan, as I write this, the playoffs are going on to determine who plays in the World Series (Oct 1996). I watched a lot of games with Uncle Harry in 1970s, as we lived in the same neighborhood. I know in my heartould love to be here for this series. He was a person of good h umor who loved his family very much. Family members still remember his supurb handwriting skills. His penmanship was of the script from the last century. It was very beautiful to see.

Today is October 12, 1996. Daddy passed away September 4, 1996. I have so many things I want to tell about him that it's all running together.
Coley is a nickname which everyone used when referring to him. Coley was born at the turn of the century before cars and airplanes. As a young man he worked with his father and brothers in the timber industry in the Beaumont area. Daddy d for Socony Vacuum Shipping in the '20s and '30s hauling barges of oil and gas to all the surrounding states. These tugboats were of the sea-going type, very large and expensive. Dad told me of an episode in the 1930s with one of the tugs catching fire. The location of this disaster was in the Louisiana River Bottoms. The boat was completely destroyed and the crew was streanded in the water up to their chins through the whole night. The next day a passing Cajun fisherman picked them up. They wer taken to a small place in the swamp. Dad said they were more worried about losing the boat than anything else.
Coley worked on these boats until the early 1930s when he went to work for Magnolia Petroleum Co.
Daddy met my mother the day she was born. The family story was they lived across the street from Mom's parents at the time of her birth. Daddy was 14 years old at this time. He jokingly asked Grandmother to "save this one for me." Sure e, 18 years later they were married. Mom and Dad were married for 62 years. They had seven children - 4 four boys and 3 girls. Coley loved to hunt and fish whenever possible. Daddy had an outgoing personality and would you you the shirt off his back. He retired in January 1960, Enjoying 36 years of doing what he wanted until his death. Daddy has given all the kids a history lesson of Beaumont during the teens up t the World War II era. I think he enjoyed talking about the "good old days" more than anything else. ( We miss him a lot)
