Margaret, wife of James Barckley; Sarah, wife of John Barnhill; Jane, wife of Samuel Barnhill; Mary Lewis and Rebecca, wife of Hugh Stephenson. Plantation in Tenure of Wm. Robinson, Junr. to son Thomas. Bro-in-law Richard Walker and son Thomas, exrs. Wit: Thos. Lusk (Scrivener), Wm. Dean and John Rickey, certify that they guided testators hand in making mark he having been blind for many years. Letters granted to Thomas. Daniel Craig located a considerable tract on the west side of the Bristol road including the site of the tavern at Newville, subsequently built upon it, and was known as "Craig's tavern" for many years.
    From another source:..."Daniel Craig, settled on a tract of 250 acres in Warrington township, Bucks County, where he died in June, 1776, having been totally blind for some years. His widow, Margaret, survived him, with eight children: Thomas; John; William; Margaret, wife of James Barclay; Sarah, wife of John Barnhill; Jane, wife of Samuel Barnhill; Mary Lewis; and Rebecca, wife of Hugh Stephenson. His son Thomas took a prominent part in the Revolution, was commissioned a captain, October 23, 1776, and commanded a company in Col. Baxter's "Flying Camp" in the battle of Fort Washington, November, 1776. He served throughout the war and at its close was Commissioner of Purchases with the rank of colonel. He married Jean Jamison. Sarah Craig, who married John Barnhill, survived her husband, who at his death in 1797, was a merchant at 42 North Third Street, Philadelphia. They had three children: Robert, Margaret, and Sarah.

The given name, "Samuels" is from Daniel Craig's records which is often referenced in the genealogy of Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt. "Robert Barnhill, born in 1754, married Margaret Potts, daughter of John Potts, of Germantown. He succeeded to his father's business and died in 1814. His daughter, Margaret, married Cornelius Van Schaich Roosevelt, grandfather of President Theodore Roosevelt."

    Relocated to Washington Co., Pa in 1779, after having served a tour in the Pennsylvania Regiment. David Lee Barnhill referrs to this Samuel as"Samuel Jr." This is the same Samuel M. Barnhill. He re-enlisted in the Pennsylvania Regiment to help in the effort to rid the territory of marauding Indians. Continued to serve until 1782. Found on the 1795 tax list of Scott Co., Ky. Service record of the revolutionary war finds him living in Scott Co., Ky. in 1840 at the age of 82. This puts his birth year at 1758. Pension started Jan. 9, 1833 at age 74. This also puts his birth year at 1758. Initial "M" is thought to be "Marcus". (Not documented) Other source says Samuel is buried at Stoner Creek cemetery at Muddy Ford north of Georgetown, Ky. This is the Samuel Barnhill referred to in the Kentucky Historical Sosiety's library at Frankfort as having "settled at Muddy Ford with two brothers". From "Abstracts Of Pension Papers of Soldiers of the Revolutionary War, 1812 and Indian Wars of Scott County, Kentucky" - abstracts by Annie Walker Burns Bell...Page 2 "The above named soldier was living in the county of Scott, State of Kentucky, when he applied for pension on the date of November 15th, 1832, aged 72 years. He states that he was born in the county of Bucks, State of Pennsylvania, date of October 29th, 1761. He enlisted in the county of Cumberland, state of Pennsylvania." Samuel moved to Scott County, Kentucky about 1790 with two brothers, Robert and Daniel - based on historical documents regarding the early settlers of Scott County found in the Kentucky Historical Society's library at Frankfort. Samuel Barnhill Jr. was released from military service in Washington County, Pennsylvannia in 1782. He and 2 brothers Robert and Daniel Barnhill are on the 1794 and 1795 tax records of Scott County, Kentucky. Jane, their sister who married Hugh Sharon, Came to Scott County, Kentucky in 1797 from Mifflin County, Pennsylvannia.

    President Theodore Roosevelt is a 1st cousin 3 times removed of Robert Barnhill (1769). John Barnhill (1729), was a brother to Samuel Barnhill (1732). Each married Craig sisters, daughters of Daniel and Margaret Craig of Pennsylvania. My ancestor Samuel married Jane and John married Sarah. Samuel and family moved from Washinton County, Pennsylvania to Scott County, Kentucky in 1789/90. Robert and Sarah's first six children were born in Scott County, Kentucky. The family moved from Scott County, Kentucky to Butler County, Ohio in 1804. In March 1820, Robert moved from Butler County, Ohio to Marion County, Indiana since the territory was going to be available for purchase as a result of a treaty between the Indians and the federal government. Robert applied for ten 80 acre tracts. Sadly, he and several other settlers died of an outbreak of malaria in 1821 just as the city of Indianapolis was being established. Since there was no cemetery, they were buried in a plot near where they had settled. The small cemetery was referred to as the "plague cemetery", and later as the Patterson Cemetery. Unfortunately, the cemetery was destroyed in 1922 to make room for a new medical science building on the campus of the IUPUI medical center in Indianapolis. Robert received his ten 80 acre tracts shortly after he died. I have a copy of the original patent signed by President Jackson. Family genealogist and author A. Virgil Barnhill claims this Robert (supposedly born in 1759) married Jane Auten in North Carolina. My research does not support this. I have no evidence of this family or any member of it ever having been in North Carolina. Primary source of information is John Beelar's journal published in 1917, and Opal Baker's book, "The Barnhill Family" co-authored by Sally Jane Moore. My research supports the following: "Samuel (of Washington County, Pennsylvania) moved to Scott County, Kentucky about 1790 with two brothers, Robert and Daniel" - based on historical documents regarding the early settlers of Scott County found in the Kentucky Historical Society's library at Frankfort. The Samuel referred to here is Samuel M. Barnhill (b 29 Dec 1761). In the biography of Thomas Bennett, an early pioneer of Butler County, we get an insight to the nature and generosioy of our ansestor, Robert Barnhill. Bennett "took a lease for 5 years of Levi Hawkins, on which he commenced work about the first of Mar 1816, and cleared nearly 5 acres that spring to put in corn. Adjoining the lease lived Robert Barnhill, who was a great help to Mr Bennett, by loaning him 30 bushels of corn, and when Mr Bennet had his clearing done he sent a hand and team to help plow the ground and plant the corn. Mr Barnhill afterward moved to Indianapolis and Mr Bennett thought he was the first white person that died in that city, Probably in 1817."
