    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Census: 1830, Jackson Co, Missouri

    Notes:

White County is located in Middle Tennessee, one of the state's three "grand divisions."
White County was formed in 1806 from Smith and Jackson Counties.
In 1806, a petition for county organization, signed by 155 residents, was presented to the General Assembly in Knoxville. On Sep 11, 1806, White County was formed, partitioned from Smith and Jackson Counties. It was a huge area, encompassing all of what is now White and Warren Counties, and parts of the counties of Cannon, Coffee, DeKalb, Franklin, Grundy, Putnam, and Van Buren. Over the next few decades, White County was itself partitioned, causing the eventual move of the County Seat from its original location near the White homestead to Sparta, where it remains. Because of this partitioning, early research should also include Putnam, Van Buren, and Warren counties.
White County is in Middle Tennessee, in the Cumberland Mountains, midway between Nashville and Knoxville, and covers an area of 377 square miles. Called "the Mountain District", it's scenery is said to rival the Swiss Alps. The Center Hill e and Recreation Area lies at the eastern boundry of the county, the "Calf Killer" River runs through the middle of the county, and the beautiful Caney Fork River runs around the southwestern border, near the Warren and DeKalb County lines. Earliest migration was by frontiersmen coming through the Cumberland Gap, but later settlement was due in part to a highway between Knoxville and Nashville that was opened in 1785.

    Dear Sherry,
Saw you message below on Thomas Linville. From "Linville Family In America - 300th Anniversary Edition" by Dr. Alice Eichholz
    I have that Thomas Linville, b. ca. 1760 NC/SC, d. Feb 1832 Lafayette Co., MO, m.1) Jemimah Campbell, m. 2) Mary Ridge.

When Alice did this 300th Anniversary edition of her book, she did not have all the children of Thomas. But she does list Thomas, b. ca. 1760, as being the son of Thomas and Catherine ____Linville. This elder Thomas was born ca. 1735 VA and died in 1818 in Tennessee, buried at Howell Farm Cemetery. (I can't determine right now the county).

Please contact Alice Eichholz at the address above. My Linville line comes from Laurens Co., SC which is why I immediately noticed your message. Alice and I don't think, however, your Thomas is from my John Linville, b. ca.
1708-10, who married Anna Christina Stephens about 1730.

    Notes:

"Campbell County Tennessee USA: A History of Places, Faces, Happenings, Traditions, and Things", Vol. I., by Dr. Miller McDonald. Campbell County, Tennessee County History. . As specified in the act that created the county, the first court was held at the home of Richard Linville. Linville owned his home, a farmstead, and public tavern in the area where La Follette is presently located. This site was selected because of Linville's prominence in the community and because the public house owned and operated by him was thought to be big enough to hold meetings pertaining to public affairs. Due to the size of the crowd in attendance, court was moved outside and held out of the back of an old-time wagon bed. Linville owned a copper still and was famous for the manufacture of "Indian Peach Brandy".

Campbell County Court Record Index. Chapter and Section 21.6. Campbell County Court held at his home.

Campbell County Tennessee USA (see above): History of Jacksboro, Tennessee. The town of Jacksboro and the land area surrounding it are more closely tied to Campbell County, its government and history than any other. As a small town it ranks among the oldest. ... The location of Jacksboro as the county seat for Campbell County was settled only after some debate and wrangling. The act creating Campbell County in 1806 appointed as commissioners James Grant, William Hancock, Jacent Cloud, Robert Glenn, RICHARD LINVILLE, Sampson David and John English to "lay out a place, the most suitable and convenient in said county for the purpose of erecting a court house, prison and stocks."

Several Christians were in the very first wagon train to take the Applegate Trail, and the leaders of this train were
Christians. This was the train led by brothers-in-law Harrison Linville and Medders Vanderpool. Vanderpool was married to Margaret Linville, a younger sister to Harrison. Among the other Christians in this train were John Bird Bounds and his wife, Elizabeth Lovelady Bounds. Their oldest daughter, Nancy Bounds Linville, was married to Harrison Linville.

Except for one 77-year-old man, the oldest travelers in the
train were Richard and Mary Linville, both in their 70s. They were the parents of Harrison Linville, Margaret Vanderpool and Catherine Crowley.

Thomas and Mary ("Aunt Polly") Lovelady were also in
this train. He was a brother to Elizabeth Bounds. Three other Christian families in this train were Absalom and Mary Ann Faulconer, Robert and Sarah Lancefield, and John Burris and Emily Smith. John Burris Smith was a gospel preacher, and his arrival brought the number of Christian preachers in Oregon to four.

It is from the Missouri Historical Review, Volume 64, Number 1, October, 1969, State Historical Society of Missouri, Columbia, MO by Warren A. Jennings, Associate Professor of History, SW Missouri State College, Springfield, MO., entitled "The Expulsion of the Mormons from Jackson County, Missouri"
The article describes a clash of Mormons and Christians in the county during the year 1834 and an ensuing gun battle in November of that year where "The fire must have been heavy; for when the battle was over, two of their citizens and a number of their horses were dead on the field. Dead were Thomas Linville, who had his jaw shot away and Hugh I Brazeal, an attorney, who had received two balls in the head. Several others were wounded. The Mormons also suffered casualties. Andrew Barber died the following day and it was not expected that Philo Dibble would survive........"
    ___
Past and Present of Nodaway Missouri, Vol 1, states he was a captain in the militia that faught with the Mormons and was killed in that conflict.
Came to Missouri from Tennessee about 1830 and located in Jackson County, Mo.

    Notes:

    (from Mary Ehlers)
Catherine Linville Bowers and Thomas Linville were the children of a constable of White Co, Tennessee, in 1808 (sic), Thomas Linville, and his wife, Catherine. Catherine died and he married secondly Mary Ridge. He died in Missouri and his will writtn in 1836 was very simple, stating his possessions and leaving them to his wife and the youngest four children - Jeremiah, Hyram H., Andrew and Charity. Two of his older sons, Zachariah and Aaron witnessed the will. Two unnamed daughters born before 1790 are listed in "The Linville Family in America - 300th Annual Edition" by Alice Eicholz. It seems like that Nancy Lovelady was one of these daughters.

(sic) - they married in 1811 in Carter County.

    (From Leonard B Meyer)
    July 24, 1997
    Dear Sherry Sharp:

Your letter came yesterday, and some material from Wilma came today. I told my wife Ruth that it seems I have acquired another fan in Wilma, that making two, Ruth being the other one! I am glad that what I have contributed is appreciated,d I appreciate what I have received also.

Perhaps I should make it clear how I acquired this much information regarding such a limited time span. A few years ago, I got possession of a bunch of old letters and documents far long enough to transcribe them by hand, into three bindef legal paper. I started out trying to learn more about the Butts family from which I am descended, and from there the search proliferated into the Lovelady, Bownds (Bounds) and other families.

My great-grandfather, Jackson Butts, married Jane Lovelady as his first wife. She died August 31, 1847. He married a second wife, Catherine Poland, who died within a year or so, then in 1852 he married Susan Bounds who was my great-grandm. So, you see, there is no blood relationship between me and the Loveladys, except for Jackson's oldest daughter Margaret Ann, who was Jane's only survivor who had children. But Pappy Lovelady wrote to Jackson and Susan as son and daughter, Mary Jones addressed her as "beloved aunt," and Stephen wrote to my grandfather as "Cousin Berry."

I think there is no doubt that the Loveladys, Buttses, and Joneses were in Victoria County in 1844, as one of Jackson's sons, Andrew, appears as born in Texas about that time. Also I have a copy of a handwritten receipt which goes "Receif Jackson Butts the sum of five dollars in full of his state and county tax for the year 1849 - F.U. Fordham, Ass & Coll, V.C., Victoria County."

Also, Ann, the youngest Lovelady girl, married Alfred Allee November 4, 1847. And I have a copy of the Bill of Sale of the home of James Lovelady to Edward Fink, Lot #1, Block 117, Range 8, Victoria, April 24, 1852.

In the statement in the summation sent by Wilma regarding the organization of the First Christian Congregation in Victoria, about James and Nancy being on the board, there is a little error. Those named, James and Nancy, Jackson, Sarah any Jones, A. Allee (Ann had already died) and perhaps Felix Webb, were the whole congregation!

It must have been in 1852 that the Loveladys and Joneses moved over into Dewitt County on the Manahurla Minnuvee Creek, also called Buzzard Roost Country.

There was quite a lot of communication between the Joneses and Butts families in the '50s. In 1860, George was going to school in Goliad. A letter from Mary goes thus: "We are all about to leave this country. Pap (James) and Grandmaf going to the mountains. They have sold their cattle." There seems to have been a terrible drought that caused many people to leave that area. Added in a postscript at the beginning of the letter is "I have got the sweetest little brother. He can sit along. He is as fat as a pig." That must have been Henry at several months old; and it is apparent that Sarah must have died soon after Henry's birth. So my date of 1860 must be an error of reading an indistinct date.

So, Mabry and Mary, and perhaps others moved to Terryville, on the line between Dewitt and Lavaca Counties. But Susan Mariah must have married to A Wiggins and was still living at Middletown or Weesatche. Susan later lived at Hoss Bluffrty County and urged George to come out there, as that area needed a doctor and singing school teacher. But that was in 1872, after the war! Instead, he seems to have married Frances Bosworth and was living near Schulenburg in Lavaca County. From there, in connection with the Bosworth family, we find him living up in Central Texas, Red Rock, Pettytown, maybe San Saba and finally Stephenville. He and Frances are buried in West End Cemetery, Stephenville, Erath Co, Texas.

I have no date for Mary's marriage, but she and Mr. Norton moved to Oak Hill near LaGrange, Texas. After several years, they moved to North Texas, then moved back. Mary was living in Burleson County about 1914. According to the reuni, Mary had married a Moore, and Sue had married a Linthicum.

Mary never had any children (by choice), and I am of the opinion that the friction between her and Mabry was because she married and did not continue to take care of his "four little motherless boys" as she put it. Anyway, she tried toe of the boys, as George and Sue did. Mabry farmed the boys out at times, some of them to my great-grandmother Susan. But the 1870 Census reveals that Stephen and Andrew were living with Mabry and Martha then, as well as daughter Nancy and Nellie (b 1864 & 1868) and the 1880 lists a son Joel A, born November 28, 1874.

I am confused about the children of Martha listed as being born in Chambers Co, after Nancy (Nannie) and Nellie, also Joel A. I know nothing about Laura, Tom, Anna, Alice and John, but those named above were in the 1870 and 1880 Lavaca Cos records and must have been in Lavaca Co at that time. Also, it is a matter of record that Mabry officiated at the wedding of his father-in-law, Dr. Joel Ponton, to Harriet Koonce on October 1, 1871, near where I now live in Lavaca Co. However, it may well explain Stephen's reference to having been to Beaumont on one occasion.

Incidentally, I have noticed that Mabry and Sarah had a daughter Nancy J, born 1848, next after Sue. About the name ---- in the document about the Organization of the First Christian Congregation, the name is Mayberry, which no doubt is t, shortened to Mabry usually, but spelled Mabarie by Margaret Ann Butts Cooley.

I have just been checking the list of Mabry's children and the dates given for their births seems to have been made from a faulty memory. Assuming, I think correctly, that the three families came to Texas in 1844, it seems obvious that Ge841 and Mary 1843 were born in Missouri, but there is some doubt about Susan 1846 and Nancy 1848, though I think they were born in Texas. But Cyrus 1852, Stephen 1854, Andrew 1857, were born in Texas because the document of the Organization of the First Christian Congregation in Victoria has the names of M.M. and Sarah, date of March 28, 1849. Henry was not listed in the census of 1860, so his birth date 1863 is probably correct. It is on record that Cyrus Jones was in Goliad Co in 1870, age 18, seemingly living with relatives after the breakup of the Jones family. But in a letter from Mary she wrote that Susan Mariah (Margaret Ann Butts spelled Mariar) wrote that Mr. Wiggins had "joined the church" and that Cyrus intended to. I wonder if this Cyrus was one of the Wiggins children. In this letter Mary complains that Mabry had George and Susan a brother to keep, but had refused to give her one.

As far as I had known previously, Margaret Ann, Jackson's daughter, Sue Wiggins, and George were the only Lovelady descendents, and I am glad to find there were others. I have been trying to find some of the Jones descendents for some ythout success.

I was born, not many miles from where the Joneses and the Loveladys lived, in Goliad County, at a later date, Dec 7, 1906. From that you will notice that I will be 91 on my next birthday. My handwriting has deteriorated considerably spied these letters.

I am sending this information for you to consider, before I send any copies. I will have to go through the letters to find some that will illustrate what I have written. But as I wrote Wilma, I have three binders full of writings, ant want to let them get away, possibly in the mail. I have suggested that Ron Lehde, who lives in Victoria, copy those he wants to, but she/Wilma reports that his copier is in need of repair. Since Sherry Sharp has a son John in Houston, I might make the same offer to him. Or I might leave the material at my son's place, 30211 Charlie Lane, Magnolia, Texas 77355. Maybe something can be arranged.
    Sincerely,
    Leonard B. Meyer

    Research Notes:
Familiar relationships to help confirm Nancy Linville is a Linville - but more info is needed:

Granville Linville m Ann Adeline Johnson

Granville is brother of Harrison Linville who married Nancy Bounds.
Nancy Bounds is daughter of James* Lovelady.

Granville and Harrison's father Richard would be Nancy's uncle.

1850 census, North Carolina: Granville living with his father in law and Nancy Young 15 (b 1835) is also there.

Gan Johnson 68 1783 North Carolina
    Nancy Johnson 63 1787 Tennessee
    Nancy P Johnson 30 1820 Tennessee
    Barnet J Johnson 21 1829 Missouri
    Nancy Young 15 1835 Missouri
    Granville Linville 40 1810 Tennessee
Ann A (Johnson) Linville 28 1822 North Carolina
    John B Linville 7 1843 North Carolina
Washington Linville 3 1847 North Carolina
    Ann M Linville 1 1849 North Carolina

Ann Johnson Linville's brother Barnet J Johnson. in 1865 Leavenworth Co, Kansas census:

    B J Johnson 36 1829 freighter 21500 MO
    _?_ Johnson 30 1835 KY
    Robt Johnson 10 1855 KY
    Lizzie Johnson 4 1861 KS
    Wm Johnson 2 1864 KS
    _?_ Neal 31 1834 female KS
    Lottie Young 1834 31 MO
    Mary Young 5 1860 MO
    Jane Young 3 1862 MO

Lottie Young -- looks like she could be a widowed sister or sister-in-law and Mary and Jane nieces - or she could be Mrs. B.J. Johnson's sister

Lottie Young probably related to Nancy Young, same age, living with Gan Johnson in 1850?
or could she even be same person? (Nancy Charlotte or something?)

Duke Young, married Sarah Lovelady, another sister of James Lovelady. he named one of his sons William Johnson Young (b 1818). Johnson name must have connected to Young name, rather than Loveladys.

These Youngs in the Johnson family are likely connect to the Duke Young family somehow. Looks like Granville marrying into the Johnson family is also indirectly marrying into the Lovelady/Duke Young connection. Also, Barnett Johnson might have married into the Duke Young family as well.

    research notes:
    Duke Young
    Granville Linville
    Gan Johnson
    Barnett Johnson
    Nancy Linville

    Research Notes:
Linville connections to the children of Thomas Lovelady and Jane Wear -- even though no conclusions this shows the strong kinship of the two families.

However, no Nancy has been found to be recorded in the Thomas Linville family. Also not sure if Linville family was in SC and/or White County TN during time frame to meet up with James Lovelady and marry in c 1815.

Aaron Linville (bro to Zachariah who married Nancy Cash) m Eleanor Ellison 1822 - wonder if that's Allison?) Zachariah and Aaron would be bros to my Nancy - if she's a Linville.
the Zachariah in 1830 census married Nancy Cash was into the Christian/Church of Christ movement along with my James Lovelady and Duke Young and others.
Zachariah's daughter married an Allison (see above) another family line threading thru Johnsons, Bounds and Linvilles and even Trapp.

    Notes:

Moved his family to Arizona and California when those states were wilderness.

"In 1852 he crossed the plains with ox-teams, driving some cattle to the Pacific coast. For some time he engaged in mining and stock-raising at Rough and Ready, and later became a fruit-grower in Santa Rosa, Cal., and still later was a farmer of Salinas for a year. Nine years were then spent at Santa Barbara, Cal., where he became a well-to-do farmer, and in the Centennial year he settled in the Salt River valley, buying a quarter section of land adjoining Phoenix. After several years profitably spent in farming and stock-raising here he laid out Linville, the first addition to Phoenix, and from that time until his death, in July, 1893, continued in the real estate business. Several terms he filled the office of county supervisor, and in every way nobly met the obligations of citizenship. He was identified with the Christian Church and with the Masonic order. His wife, a native of Kentucky, departed this life in Phoenix, in November, 1891."

But no individual in this party suffered more than 44-year old Catherine Linville Crowley, an older sister of Harrison
Linville. Her daughter, Matilda, and son, Calvin, along with
his wife and child, all died on the plains before the train ever detoured to the Applegate Trail. They probably died from typhoid or mountain fever. Calvin died on July 26 and his body was wrapped in a sheet and buried without a coffin.
After detouring to the Applegate Trail, Catherine's 16-year old daughter, Martha Leland Crowley, died of typhoid on
October 18 in present-day Josephine County. Two more
daughters, Melissa and a nameless baby, died on the same
day, October 27. Finally, her husband, Thomas Leland
Crowley, died of pneumonia on December 4 in the vicinity of
Creswell, a little south of present-day Eugene in Lane County.

With her remaining five children, all 12 years old and
younger, Catherine Linville Crowley continued resolutely on
to a new home and a new beginning in Polk County.

1850 census, North Carolina: Granville living with his father in law
and Nancy Young 15 (b 1835) is also there.

Ann Johnson Linville's brother Barnet J Johnson. in 1865 Leavenworth Co, Kansas census:

    _?_ Neal 31 1834 female KS
    Lottie Young 1834 31 MO
    Mary Young 5 1860 MO
    Jane Young 3 1862 MO

Lottie Young -- looks like she could be a widowed sister or sister-in-law and
Mary and Jane nieces - or she could be Mrs.

These Youngs in the Johnson family are likely connect to the Duke Young family
somehow. Looks like Granville marrying into the Johnson family is also
indirectly marrying into the Lovelady/Duke Young connection. Also, Barnett Johnson
might have married into the Duke Young family as well.

The Christians living in the southern part of Polk County,
led by Harrison and Nancy Linville, invited Mac Waller to
visit their area in 1848 and organize a church. The McCartys
and Bounds were living in this district, as were David and
Mary Lewis, David Stump, and Dr. Zedekiah Davis. The
Linvilles offered the use of their fine residence situated on the Luckiamute River for a meetingplace. Harrison Linville operated a ferry across the Luckiamute, and as a result, the main county road running from Nat Ford's place south into Benton County led past the Linville house. Waller accepted
At Home in the Willamette Valley the invitation, and a congregation was set in order on the Luckiamute.

SHOOTING AFFRAY -- Last Wednesday evening, LINVILLE BOWERS who resides a couple of miles from this city, in Benton county, went into the Albany Brewery, and getting into an altercation with Mr. Rogers, one of the proprieters, drew a pistol and fired two shots at Mr. Rogers, but fortunately neither of them took any effect. About this time a man who works in the brewery caught Bowers' hand from behind and wrenched the pistol from him, when Mr. Rogers shattered a few beer glasses over his head, cutting it severely in several places. Bowers was arrested, charged with an assault with an intent to kill, and after a hearing before Recorder Arnold, was held to bail in the sum of $500.00 to answer at the next term of Circuit Court.

Receipt stating "Received of Jackson Butts the sum of five dollars in full of his state and county tax for the year 1849 - F.U. Fordham, Ass & Coll, V.C. Victoria, County."
    _______
After Jane Lovelady died, he married Catherine Poland, probably about 1848-9. Catherine was born in 1829 in Tennessee who also died a year or two after their marriage. He then married Susan Bounds, daughter of Henry C Bounds, in 1852 in Victoria. There are many letters written by children of Mabra Jones to Susan, who they regard as their aunt. Even though by Jane's death, Jackson was no longer related to the Jones and Lovelady families, except through his children, he stayed close; and Susan became an integral part of the family as well. She is the g-grandmother of Leonard B. Meyer of Halletsville (b 1902) who has been so gracious as to provide much local information on the Jones, Lovelady and related families.

Jane is buried somewhere in Victoria County

    Notes:

I started out trying to learn more about the Butts family from which I am descended, and from there the search proliferated into the Lovelady, Bownds (Bounds?) and other families.

My great-grandfather, Jackson Butts, married Jane Lovelady as his first wife. She died August 31, 1847. He married a second wife, Catherine Poland, who died within a year or so, then in 1852 he married Susan Bownds who was my great-grandm.

He can sit alone.

    Sincerely,
    Leonard B. Meyer

The Victoria Advocate, Thursday, April 10, 1997, Old Clinton was Home to Many Interesting Families:

    (5) Alfred Y. Allee, Jr. - also joined the Rangers

"The Allees are of the famous Texas Ranger family....It is an interesting family whose Texas roots go back to the area where Julia A. Allee was laid to rest in old Clinton Cemetery during the Civil War, a war that would end in Confederate defeat and bring Reconstruction to the South, putting Clinton on the map as one of the most turbulent towns in Texas. All that is left of the old county seat of DeWitt County is the cemetery... Many South Texas families have roots in and around old Clinton, including some of the most historically interesting families to be found anywhere in the state, such as that of Julia A. Allee, mother to a family of Texas Rangers."

Julia Wilcox Allee had a sister, Mary Jane Wilcox, who married Jackson Jacobs. He was killed while serving as sheriff of Goliad County.
