2320 | Texas - Confederate States 1861 - 1865 When the Civil War broke out in 1861, The State of Texas decided to join with the Southern Confederate states. Governor Sam Houston resigned and refused to swear allegiance with the Confederates. The news of the 1863 Emancipation Proclamation did not reach Texas until June 19th, 1865. The last battle of the Civil War was fought at Brownsville on May 11, 1865 a month after the formal surrender of General Lee at Appomattox. Texas was readmitted to the Union on March 30, 1870. Anson Jones was the last president of the Republic of Texas. In the changing of the flags ceremony he said, The final act in this great drama is now performed, the Republic of Texas is no more. http://texasproud.com/history/six-flags-over-texas-history

2323 | Texas owned by Mexico 1821 - 21 Apr 1836 Mexico: 1821 April 21, 1836 San Jacinto Day In 1821 Mexico gained independence from Spain and the region of Texas became part of Mexico. The Austin family received a grant to settle 300 US citizens in the new territory. These settlers were led by Stephen F. Austin. Many more soon followed. Santa Anna was elected governor of Mexico in 1832 and soon after sent troops into Texas to force martial law. The Texans first rebelled at Goliad in 1835. A troop of Mexican soldiers had come to get their cannon and the Texians refused making a flag that said Come and Take it! The Texians then took over the city of San Antonio. On March 2, 1836 at the town of Washington on the Brazos, a group of 59 representatives voted to declare Texas independence. Just 4 days later, on March the 6th, Santa Anna led his army to the Alamo where he had all survivors executed. He marched on to Goliad and had everyone shot there as well. General Sam Houston and his army of Texians faced their final battle with Santa Anna along the banks of Buffalo Bayou. They fought and won independence for Texas at the Battle of San Jacinto on April 21, 1836 http://texasproud.com/history/six-flags-over-texas-history

2331 | The Alexander Breckenridge Log Home The Alexander Breckenridge Log Home, the oldest building still standing on the headwaters of the Holston River - the log house built by Alexander Breckenridge in 1769. This style of construction is typical for the era in which it was built - the country was young and rapidly expanding westward, and the most readily available (and affordable) building materials were rough logs and stone. In those days, when materials were needed for building a new structure, trees were cut down and hewn into shape by hand. The logs were then measured, cut, notched and carefully stacked on top of one another - much like a puzzle. The spaces between the logs were filled in with pine tar and/or mud. Stones were gathered and used to build a fireplace and chimney. If the homeowner had enough time and/or money, the stones were usually cut into more or less uniform rectangles. Otherwise, they were used in their natural, irregular shapes. Today, there are relatively few of these wonderful old log houses still around to serve as reminders of 18th century American life. Most of them are privately owned and in various stages of decay, but the Alexander Breckenridge log house was completely restored and moved to its present Abingdon, Virginia location behind the Washington County Public Library in 1985-86 by the Washington County Preservation Foundation. 2335 | The Moler Family cemetery
(note: As it turned out through Y-DNA, this George Adam Moler was not the son of Ludwig who immigrated in 1730 with three sons, one being named George. Per History of Lancaster County," published in 1883, no further info was had of Ludwig's son George. This dedication is in error.) of Jefferson County, West Virginia In this cemetery are buried George Adam Moler (1714-1783) and his wife Eve. George Adam Moler came to America on Aug 29, 1730 with his father, Ludwig Mohler, settling first in Lancaster, Penn. He moved to this area around 1758. He received a land grant from Lord Fairfax in 1762. Due to a misspelling on this land grant "George changed the spelling of his last name from Mohler to Moler. This cemetery is on the original land grant. Also buried here are George Adam Moler, Jr., who served in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War, and George Washington Moler, Jr., who served in Co. "D", 12th Virginia Cavalry Laurel Brigade C.S. A., who was wounded and died at Staunton, VA, on Dec 22 1863. This memorial is placed in memory of all the Moler's of Jefferson County, West Virginia, and their descendants. June 2001" |
